Politico: WaPost Sells Access

This raises serious questions ...
For $25,000 to $250,000, The Washington Post is offering lobbyists and association executives off-the-record, nonconfrontational access to "those powerful few" — Obama administration officials, members of Congress, and the paper’s own reporters and editors.
The astonishing offer is detailed in a flier circulated Wednesday to a health care lobbyist, who provided it to a reporter because the lobbyist said he feels it’s a conflict for the paper to charge for access to, as the flier says, its “health care reporting and editorial staff."
The offer — which essentially turns a news organization into a facilitator for private lobbyist-official encounters — is a new sign of the lengths to which news organizations will go to find revenue at a time when most newspapers are struggling for survival.
And it's a turn of the times that a lobbyist is scolding The Washington Post for its ethical practices.
Update: Read the WaPost's internal response here.
Update: Politico reports the WaPost has cancelled the event.

yeah they don't deliver this far, I guess that makes me lacking somehow. |
Please Vlad, stop huffing the airplane glue.
Who cares what people are saying on the last two pages of WaPo's Section A? Yes, we know that Krauthammer and Will run to the right of you. But surely you have noticed that Dionne and the Altamonts who write on the same pages can swig just as much leftist Kool-Aid as you?
In any case, it doesn't matter. Those pages are identified as commentary and opinion. So readers know what they are getting when they read them.
It's those first eight pages of WaPo that concern most thinking people. You know, the ones where they purportedly report the unbiased news - the TRUTH - assuming you still know what that increasingly archaic word means.

"I don't live in an echo chamber I live in Montana."
And obviously they don't get the Washington Post up there. |
I know your having Frank withdrawls but as I have told frank always, I don't live in an echo chamber I live in Montana, and you can't heat those chambers up, so i settled on a log home. Vlad i do believe everything that comes out of Obama's Mouth "Sarcasm Alert" |
"I think Matt is talking about the Eugene Robinson and EJ Dionne wing of the post not the Will and Krauthammer side."
Maybe he is, but I'm not. Robinse, Dionne, Will, and Krauthammer are all syndicated columnists who get paid for their opinions. The Post itself writes the editorials on the facing page, and they have been uniformly on the side of the neoconservatives for years.
But you could always say, "That's the editorial page, the news is different." And that's true - just like the Wall Street Journal, which has a far right editorial page but otherwise excellent journalism.
The Post has swung to the right in its news coverage, though, with recent headlines like "Obama afraid to confront mullahs."
If you never leave the right-wing echo chamber, though, you won't believe any of this. |

I think Matt is talking about the Eugene Robinson and EJ Dionne wing of the post not the Will and Krauthammer side. |

i can guaran-frigging-tee you that no one on our side of the aisle either likes or respects the WaPo. They are craven worshippers of power who need to get out more. And waaaaay too biased towards the radical right. give those destructive clowns waaaaay too much credence. |

is just a pitiful drooling drone who falls into the "can be fooled all the time" category. She is the kind of obamaton if the community organizer tells her the moon is made of cheese, she'll ask "what kind?" Her response demonstrates beyond a shadow-of-a-doubt her complete gullibility; hence her adoring support of the community organizer.
Florida Jim, I agree, they have so compromised themselves that I don't think they will ever recover. This $ for connection scheme is going to be the death knell for the Post and, rightly so.
Seadog, they, the so-called journalists, have become ciphers. |
To answer NeoConScum's 11:39 post, no - WaPo is not cutting Rahm and his thug bunch in on the operation. It is Rahm who is feeding WaPo a piece of the action.
The motley crew of one-world statists and Chicagoland gangsters that make up the current administration NEED its laptop media to stay relevant and solvent. Therefore, it is they who have concocted the scheme by which the administration dribbles out controlled messaging and insider info that the Post can then sell.
Both the Post and the Administration win. The rag that gave us Woodward and Bernstein gets to keep their paychecks and continue deluding themselves into believing theirs is an honored profession. And of course, the WH gets to continue propagandizing and deluding the public by controlling the messages of supposedly indepent news organizations.
The public gets screwed of course, but hey! you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs, can you? |
"now would be a good time for the liberal WaPo to stop lecturing and condescending to those of us who still have principles."
Anybody who thinks the Washington Post is "liberal" doesn't read the Washington Post. The editorial page turned right ten years ago, and now the news coverage has moved right in the last two or three years.
I understand it's more comfortable to repeat talking points from twenty years ago, but try to keep up. |
cover my head were I a member of the Main Stream Media! Why? I'd be ashamed to let anybody recognize me, for fear they'd see who low I'd fallen.
Where did the real journalists/reporters go? They investigate nothing today! |
"No matter how many times you flush...." comes to mind when considering the slow spiral of "journalism" in the bowl the past few years. |
Why do peole that opose state run media still subscribe/buy this Paper? |
Except politicians are more expensive and with prostitutes you actually get something for your money. |
Corruption, extortion, bribery, law-breaking, insider trading, sweetheart mortgage and other 'deals', tax cheating, campaign lies, money laundering, cooked books etc. etc.
THIS IS OUR COUNTRY'S GOVERNMENT, MEDIA, BIG BUSINESS AND WALL STREET.
Where does all their money come from? NOT from the poor, NO WAY from themselves. NOPE, they get their money and use it to gain Power, from the sacrificing, patriotic, hard-working, taxpaying Middle Class Americans; the ONLY TRUE AMERICANS, supporting the poor and making the rich and powerful ANTI-AMERICANS richer and more powerful. Then when we're BLED dry, we'll be owned and enslaved by the International rich and powerful. |
If the contacts or info was of any real use that trashy rag would print it themselves to get their circulation up. Phony stories and insider tips are more often than not ,NOT creditable. |
protected by the Constitution the press is now doing everything it can to enable Obama to survive but the truth is , finally, coming forth. The liberal media, including the press and TV, has sold it's soul for access to Obama. Now it is selling that access, isn't this much like cap and trade-create a need by capping some unnamed material then charging for those who go over the limits. Thomas Jefferson is barfing in his grave at our despicable demorats and their efforts to derail capitalism. Here is what Was said by FDR's SEc. of Treasury after 8 ears of Roosevelt[see if you can find any similarities[ :Henry Morgenthau, Jr., the secretary of treasury and one of the most powerful men in America, had a startling confession to make before influential Democrats who ran the House Ways and Means Committee, in 1939. "We have tried spending money . WE are spending more than we have ever spent before and IT DOES NOT WORK. ...I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job.I want to see people get enough to eat. WE HAVE NEVER MADE GOOD ON OUR PROMISES...I say after 8 years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started...and an enormous debt to boot." In these words Morgenthau summarized a decade of disaster, especially in the years Roosevelt was in power. Average unemployment in 1939 was higher than that in 1931, the year before Roosevelt captured the presidency. No depression or recession had lasted even half this long.

couldn't shock the shiite outta me any more.. They may call it 'revenue generating' and, hey, maybe it is...in the sense that The Oldest Profession is 'revenue generating'!
They are Craven Ho's for The Bamma. Period. And, watch, they won't even blush at being outed.
Hey...D'ya suppose they're cutting Axlebutt, Rahm and the twits in for a piece of the action. Now, that would be just too WONDERFUL. :-) |
...it's OK for democrats to be corrupt because Repubs are corrupt. OOOOOK...Thanks Rafi girl! |
That is the worlds worse moustache you sport, if you can't grow it shave it. |
safe to say, if one Drive by is willing for kickbacks, the rest are also. Not only that but you can bet the so called journalists are also on the take. You don't get this blanket p.r. without paying people off and Barry has tons of money he's amassed via nefarious means and probably more sifting in.
Nothing these clowns write or report can be believed..not when there's money passed for influence.
I'm having trouble understanding your post. Are you for or against media corruption? |
Keith Olberdingdong's friend is that how you won your pulitzer prize, two fine news organizations msnbc and wapost. |
Proves the old adage about opinions and a-holes and in fact, in her case, the difference is negligible. |
Somehow I get the feeling that Raffi's here just to earn her pay..this is her beat to use inane statements to divert the conversation. I wonder is it cash under the table? Direct deposit? Nah, Check Nah...it's cash..so that like all the lefties in the government..one can cheat the taxman.
Wapo and the rest of the LSM..who's surprised, presstitutes all. And they expect us to believe anything they write??? Good, one more nail in the coffin of the dead media. |
Well, I guess now would be a good time for the liberal WaPo to stop lecturing and condescending to those of us who still have principles. As it reported during Watergate: FOLLOW THE MONEY. |
