Rep. Steve King of Iowa Endorses Thompson
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:42 AM
Bonus: Rope-a-dopes the MSM in the process. MSNBC was reporting Romney before the official endorsement came.

They're also reporting the endorsement took the Romney team by surprise:
King just announced that he's supporting Thompson. Team Romney is in the back of the room looking bewildered. They were all here, leading all the press to conclude that it was an endorsement for Romney.
King is conservative on immigration, social issues, and spending, and his endorsement will undoubtedly be more significantly with Iowa conservatives than the Des Moines Register's. Michelle Malkin has the full endorsement text.

Fred Thompson is a solid conservative with a pro-life voting record and a logical Constitutional strategy to protect marriage. Of the candidates, he has the best understanding of the principles of federalism. He has adopted good policy and put together a solid platform. I have confidence that he would defend the border and the Constitution with appointments to the courts. Thompson, like Bush, would need help with appointments. He needs to really want to be president. Although he might bring the wisdom of Solomon to the White House, he needs the fire in the belly to get there.

Romney PWN'd
This is... bizarre.

Read the text of the endorsement. King mentions each of the major candidates by name EXCEPT Romney, going out of his way to do the plus/minus thing - what's good about them, and what is bad. He goes through Tancredo, McCain, Rudy, Huckabee, and Fred. He even implies that Fred's negatives are his lacking of "fire," that he doesn't strongly want the Presidency...

So if I'm a Romney supporter, I'm listening to that, and feeling good. King has politely dismissed everyone else from consideration. Now for the big announcement: oops, it's Fred, after all!

This is a TOTAL diss by Rep. King. The only way to read that release is that it was written with a Romney endorsement in mind, and changed at the last minute to Thompson. Mitt doesn't even get a mention, when Tancredo gets a whole paragraph.

While I'm sure Team Romney is hurting, I also wonder about this total head fake from King. Was he playing Team Romney all along? Does he just like to mess with people's heads? Or was he really undecided until this AM?

NICE
I am still not giving up on Fred Thompson! Hoping for a January surprise!

So, MKH
they not only rope-a-doped the MSM but also the Romney campaign..lil fakery on your part as well
Sarah writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 12:30 PM
Anybody but Romney
If Republicans nominate Romney, they deserve all the wrath they will get from ALL americans for shoving this lying-never-taking-responsibility crying racist republican. Hillary will have fun kicking him to the curb - without much of an effort and dividing the country further along race and religious lines. If you think the florida recount caused divisions in this country, a Romney nomination will be excruciating - who needs another OJ trial-like country with blacks/hispanics/whites revisiting race dividing politics? DAMP THIS LYING-RICH-RELIGIOUS-RACIST-REPUBLICAN...pick a true representative of republican diverse positions.

Calculated move to hurt Huckabee
By endorsing Thompson, King is doing what he can to take votes from Huckabee. This will help Romney.
steveegg writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 1:04 PM
Add me to Team Thompson
I'm sure Sean Hackbarth will be happy to find out I've thrown in with Rep. King - http://norunnyeggs.townhall.com/g/01850f2c-5872-41ac-81f9- dbad09975314

I can't speak for King, but my tipping point against Romney happened yesterday, with his performance (or lack thereof) on Meet The Press.
And/but/so writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 1:24 PM
Right, JA
In Romneyworld, everything is about Romney.

Therefore, when King endorses Thompson, it is REALLY about hurting Huckabee, to help Mitt.

Huh? If King wanted to help Mitt so bad, why not endorse him?

Answer: King saw Romney on MTP yesterday, and realized what a squish the guy is...

Sarah - some advice
You mentioned that you are an ecomonics major, so I'm asuming that you're rather young. My suggestion is that you get back to your studies. Have you taken any English classes yet? It would reallly give you a good foundation for what you seem to have a passion for.

Helping Fred does help Romney in Iowa, whether intentional or not.
JA writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 1:35 PM
Just a theory but...
If King had endorsed Romney, few if any votes would be taken from Huckabee. Anyone willing to support Huckabee is highly unlikely to switch over to Romney. However, it is entirely conceivable that King's endorsement of Thompson will sway some Huckabee supporters over to the Thompson camp.
RASHUM writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 1:52 PM
GIVE ME A BREAK
All you conspiracy theorists out there....Rep. King simple sees Fred Thompson as the best candidate. As do I!
JA writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 1:54 PM
End result
King's endorsement of Thompson means less votes for Huck and a better shot for Romney winning Iowa.
kerrhome writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 2:28 PM
Sour grapes
Spin it any way you like. Romney was considered and didn't get the endorsement of the key conservative in IA. This hurts. You may count Thompson out, but many believe he really is the only conservative running. This is a good boost to Fred's new bus tour.
JA writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 3:05 PM
I didn't realize
that true conservatives do lobbying work for abortionists and then lie and make excuses about it when running for president.
RASHUM writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 3:14 PM
JA
Last time I checked the National Right to Life Committee endorsed Fred Thompson. I do not think they would have if there was a bit of truth to that story.
JA writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 3:21 PM
Yeah it is true
Thompson himself confirmed it after first denying it, then claiming he couldn't remember whether it happened.
ONIL writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 3:28 PM
edorsement for Thompson benefits Romney
Look at it, Thompson can now help Romney fight Huckabee all about his shameful Record in Arkansas as Governor. Its gonna save Romney some money, time and energy from campaigning.
Con4fred writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 3:37 PM

You are lying about Freds supposed involvement. I will give you the quick rundown of what happened.

Fred got hired by a Law group to look into aspects of a bill that was being considered. He made a few phone calls to get some info. He got the info, passed it on to Law group that hired him with a bill for $500 dollars. If you have ever had to pay a lawyer, you know that $500 dollars buys you about 3 hours worth of work.

Got it?
And/but/so writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 3:48 PM
My God, the Romneytards...
...are out in force today. Their contorted logic about an endorsement for Fred helping Romney beat Huck is enough to make Hugh himself blush... Why assume that any votes for Fred will come from Huck? Mitt's support is actually softer, according to voter polls.

And as far as "conversions" go, your fella has a whole lot more 'plaining to do than Fred. Guns, gays, abortion, campaign finance, immigration; take your pick. Mitt 2.0 is totally different than the original from way back 2 years ago. Will the real Mitt Romney please stand up?
RASHUM writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 4:06 PM
And/but/so
"Romneytards" I like that one! The Romney supporters are sounding a lot like the Clinton supporters these days. Grasping for anything to convince themselves their campaigns are not failing.
JA writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 4:25 PM
Not lying about a thing
Check it out for yourselves. Just google "Fred Thompson lobby abortion" and see how many articles from reputable news sources come up.
RASHUM writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 4:35 PM
JA
The story was proven to be a crock of s--t! The story was widely reported, but was never proven. No further proof needed than the National Right to Life endorsement!
JA writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 4:44 PM
Then how come
Thompson was asked about it at one of the debates and his reply was something along the lines of, "That was done in my private life." He admitted it himself.
Dudley Smith writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 11:14 PM

Or someone repeating his talking points. And it's such a reach. 3 hours of work out of an entire career makes him an abortion lobbyist? Remember that tomorrow everyone, the work you do from the time you arrive until you leave for lunch will define your career.
PC writes: Tuesday, December, 18, 2007 12:35 AM
Come on, folks
I don't care how many hours it was - Thompson chose to work for abortion providers. It's not something a principled person who is against abortion should do. But Fred was pro-choice for a long time, so why should anyone be surprised? And he did lie about it, until the truth came out. Then he admitted it.

But, I'll tell you what - this is NOTHING compared to anything Huck has done, so who cares? Fred is still my number 2 choice.
