Same Old, Same Old: Boehner Elected Minority Leader (Update: They Did It! Blunt Will Be Whip.)
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 9:13 AM

Hey guys? Want more of the same? Isn't that what you meant when you voted Republicans out of office?

Good news. The Republican Party delivers!

John Boehner, current Majority Leader, was elected Minority Leader over challenger Mike Pence this morning.

Fox is reporting the vote was about 150-50. Exactly what message did they think voters were sending them?

Major Garrett had an idea: "The election of Boehner is a sure sign that congressional republican believe the '06 congressional elections were a referrendum on Bush, not Congress."

Yeah, you guys had nooooothing to do with it, huh?

The outcome of the Blunt/Shadegg race for Minority Whip is not clear yet, but Fox was hinting that Blunt had clinched it. I hope to God not. Earlier this week, folks were saying Shadegg had a better shot than Pence, so maybe he pulled it out.

Update: Here's what Hotline said about the Whip race this morning:

Minority Whip: Hotline calls show Whip Roy Blunt (MO) and Rep. John Shadegg (AZ) almost even in their race. Some members have suggested that House GOPers who don't pick the conservative Pence for maj. leader will pick his Republican Study Committee colleague Shadegg for whip to show that the party is still seeking change.

Rep. Eric Cantor (VA) insists he's backing Blunt, but this week's news has been dominated by a whisper campaign for Cantor's candidacy. Shadegg announced 11/16 via Roll Call that he will keep Cantor on as chief deputy Whip if elected.

Update: Always trust Allah:

I pray the Republicans will do the right thing. That does not, of course, mean they will.

They won’t.

Update: CNN's reporting that Blunt seems "poised to keep his post as whip," but I still can't find a definite "yes" on that.

Update: Click this. You need a laugh right now. Hee.

Update: Didn't learn a Lott, did they?

Update: Fox is reporting Blunt grabbed the Whip spot. Woo hoo! Three cheers for an undefeated streak of political tin-earism! Well done, guys. What better way to improve yourselves than to ignore every single one of your current problems, and spurn new leadership?

Update: Allah's providing consolation in the form of Democrat ineptitude, and drinks, I think. Maybe they'll still win the dumb-off? Tough call.

Trent Lott
As someone from Mississippi who dislikes Senator Lott, I find myself having to defend. His connections to the CCC are of a more pressing matter than the CSX railroad. But I must take issue with the editorial you've linked to. The editorial makes the erroroneous statement that tax payers had already paid $250 million on repairs to the CSX railroad. This is untrue. The rail line's insurance aid for the repairs.

Lott and many of the local leaders wanted to move Highway 90 to where the CSX lines are presently. I must admit, when I heard the idea, I was against it. But after having to go without Highway 90 for 5 months because of washouts and debris from Katrina, I became convinced that it was an appropriate move.

You may say all you like that Lott is the king of pork. But pork is in the eyes of the beholder. To me, Lott is just doing his job as my Senator. He, along with Cochran, and Rep. Gene Taylor are helping out an 66 mile corridor that was totally devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

Michael Savage for head of RNC
That should make things interesting.

Anyway, reelecting these guys for House and Senate Leadership reminds me of how the Ds left in stiffs like Gephardt in the House and Daschle in the Senate for all those years while the Ds stagnated.

For my money, the Rs should have elected Tom Coburn of Oklahoma to Senate leadership and Tom Tancredo to House Leadership.

Basta!
I have had enough. We get thumped and what does the GOP leadership do?

1. Mel Martinez (who I am sure is a nice guy and loves dogs as much as Michael Steele, but will be a part timer and not one to defend and rebuild the party).

2. Trent Lott as [snicker] Minority Whip.

3. The same House leadership.

Oops!
This was supposed to be the post where I said "the band played Waltzing Maltilda." This 'same old story' attitude by the Republicans is making me want them ALL defeated in 2008. They just don't represent conservatives anymore.

In fact, Pelosi, the cruelest of liberals, is the one talking about earmark reform! What the hell has happened to the Republicans?

Maybe You Should Ask Yourselves "Why?"

Why, when they get the White House, do Republicans spend so much?

Well, maybe it's the same reason that you call programs to borrow more of the money government spends "tax cuts".

Maybe it's the same reason you call very large groups of workers and citizens "special interests" while subsidizing corporations owned by a tiny fraction of the population for the good of "the economy".

Maybe it's the same reason "conservative" business leaders talk about "reducing the role of government" at one speech and then hire scores of lobbyists to pursue government handouts.

Maybe it's because the very idea that you can, should or even want to slash away huge parts of government spending in a modern economy is so much nonsense.

When "investors" abandoned this country to the depression, government spending bailed it out and since then we have relied on government spending because "investors" refuse to provide adequate capital at reasonable rates of return. So, government has to invest in what "investors" ignore - things like basic research, education, transportation, infrastructure. You know, unimportant things that nobody needs.

If you want to limit government, come up with the money to pay for what government pays for. If not, shut up and stop the hypocrisy.

Sigh
Here we go again. 2008 just became another year to purge the party I guess.

BOEHNER
I GUESS THAT THE CONSERVATIVES DID NOT GET THE MESSAGE. MR. BOEHNER MAY BE A "NEW" FACE TO SOME BUT HE IS PART OF THE PROBLEM. MR. PENCE REPRESENTS WHAT THE CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT HAS BEEN CALLING FOR. TRENT LOTT HAD HIS TIME AND DID NOTHING TO ADVANCE THE CONSERVATIVE AGENDA HE WAS PART OF THE "GET ALONG GROUUP" AS FOR MEL MARTINEZ IT IS OBVIOUS. I WORKED VERY HARD FOR CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATES THIS LAST ELECTION AND THE FEEDBACK I GOT FROM VOTERS WAS "THEY (REPUBLICANS) WILL NEVER CHANGE SO WHY VOTE.
