"Obama's Baby Mama"?

There's an uproar right now about Fox News calling Michelle Obama: "Obama's Baby Mama." The issue involves an alert that appeared on the screen during a segment about Michelle Obama.
While this is a lame attempt at pop-culture hipness, I'm still scratching my head as to why this is quite so outrageous. Certainly, it doesn't compare to saying you are "pimping out" Chelsea Clinton ...
By the way, anyone who has been on TV will attest that guests have no control -- or knowledge -- of the "b-roll footage" that is being shown, or the words that appear on the screen. As such, Michelle Malkin deserves no blame for this, assuming there is someone to be blamed ...

That people may use an offensive expression affectionately at times does not mean that a respectable American TV network should use the same expression in the same manner. Those who are arguing that the expression are not reserved for blacks alone are right but miss the point. It has been reported that McCain calls (or once called) his wife a c-nt. Should CNN or THE VIEW use that tag line to refer to her each time Cindy McCain's image appears on the tube? If you are not sure what the expression "baby mama" means look it up. It wouldn't hurt for a network that brags about fairness to also show respect. To all people.

Good Fox News gives Republicans and Conservatives a fair shake, while the rest of the media remain outright hostile most of the time.
Bad Fox News delves too much into the tabloids, and tries to be cool by calling Michelle Obama a "baby-mama", even though that makes no sense.
According to Wikipedia, "Baby Mama" would mean the Obama's have kids, but are not married. This, obviously, is not true -- the Obamas seem happily married by all accounts.
There is a movie out now called "Baby Mama", and the term comes up in a lot of rap songs, but FNC should know better. My guess is a clueless producer at FNC is to blame, or perhaps a renegade Chyron operator?
Shame on the otherwise respectable Fox News. |

You are not mistaken on the term. It does mean the woman in question is not married to the father, and it is mostly used in the black community.
Michelle Malkin goes in the gutter again, does this women have ANY class. I wish Fox News would stop giving her a soap box to spout her hate, it makes the whole party look like a bunch of racists.
Don't get me wrong, I am no fan of Michelle Obama, but I think we need to stick to the issues and actual comments made by MO. |
|
It's so cute that there are still people who actually take Fox "News" seriously.
News flash: Fox is a 24/7/365 mouthpiece for the Bush Administration. |
|
that the term had undertones that the woman in question was not your wife and the resulting child was illegitimate.
But I might be mistaken as it's been 10-15 years since I was young enough to be in the know when it came to slang.
Aside from which, there's the question as to whether or not Fox would have resorted to the same terminology if the woman and candidate in question were not black.
"Wife" or "mother" should be the prefered term for a news organization.

Simple as that.
Malkin is getting crucified by e-mailers when she has no control over the scrolling type.
Once again, hysterical Obama supporters are showing their colors--can I say that without triggering nasty responses.
Let's get back to the innumerable questions about Obama's nefarious friend, associates, and advisors and his indefensible positions. The subject is Change and the it's time to Change the topic to scrutinizing this radical lightweight whom the Democrats have nominated. |

The entire thing is stupid. I understand Mrs Obama called her husband "Baby Daddy" and it's fair to assume she is "Baby Mama"... but why would a supposed serious news organization put that on their screamer - unlesses someone just said it?
It's really odd. |
|
target as her husband. I suppose if Michelle Obama came out and said something about supporting Al Queda or the Taliban, the media should just "lay off" because that's what Obama and Kerry want?
It's ok for Michelle Obama to say whatever she wants to about the Clintons but SHE isn't fair game??
It's ok for the media to say whatever they want about Hillary but Michelle Obama is supposed to get a free ride?
Michelle Obama claims she talked long and hard with Obama about running so if she can't take the heat, she should have stayed home worrying how on a millionaire's salary she was going to pay for those music lessons and bemoan the price of arugula.

Fox should just stick with "wife" to describe her. |
|
|
At some event last year Mrs. Obama introduced her husband as her "BabyDaddy" which I thought was beneath the dignity of a Senator but, hey, it's 2008 and our culture is in the toilet anyway. |
