Key Excepts from McCain Opening Statement
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 9:54 AM
From GOP presidential candidate and Senate Armed Services Committee Ranking Member John McCain at the Petraeus/Crocker hearing this morning.

-"Should the United States instead choose to withdraw from Iraq before adequate security is established, we will exchange for this victory a defeat that is terrible and long lasting.  Al Qaeda in Iraq would proclaim victory and increase its efforts to provoke sectarian tensions, pushing for a full scale civil war that could descend into genocide and destabilize the Middle East.  Iraq would become a failed state that could become a haven for terrorists to train and plan their operations.  Iranian influence would increase substantially in Iraq and encourage other countries to seek accommodation with Tehran at the expense of our interests.  And American failure would almost certainly require us to return to Iraq or draw us into a wider and far costlier war."

-"We must press ahead against al Qaeda, the radical Shia militias and the Iranian-backed Special Groups.  We must continue to support the Sunni volunteers of the Iraqi Awakening as they stand up to al Qaeda in Iraq.  And we must continue to build the capacity of the Iraqi security forces so they can play an ever stronger and more neutral role in suppressing violence.  This means rejecting, as we did in 2007, the calls for a reckless and irresponsible withdrawal of our forces at the moment when they are succeeding.  I do not want to keep our troops in Iraq a minute longer than necessary to secure our interests there.  Our goal – my goal – is an Iraq that no longer needs American troops.  And I believe we can achieve that goal, perhaps sooner than many imagine.  But I also believe that to promise a withdrawal of our forces, regardless of the consequences, would constitute a failure of political and moral leadership. "

John McCain's strong statements
exemplfy strong leadership. He is clear in what he says.

Yesterday I put my money where my mouth is and send him our first campaign contribution. I've been sitting on the fence watching the GOP candidates disappear, one by one. Losing Romney was heartbreaking, but his good example of being a team player in the GOP sets the tone so we stand behind John McCain as the next president.

Sure, I'd like to see John select Mitt as his running mate but the world won't end if he selects another good man (or woman).

Meanwhile, it is clear now is the time to stand with pride behind John and help him protect our country. Hillary and Obama would be called traitors in another time for their defamatory comments and proposals that do not support the best interests of America.

Our politically incorrect culture encourages public sabatoge of elected officials and military leaders.

I'll never forget Hillary's statements towards General P. last time the camera was on her! She was mean, cunning, and calculating = a non patriot.

Obama is green wood and inexperienced, not to mention a dreamer= a dangerous potential president.

John is the real deal - seasoned, focused, and committed to protect this country in both the long and short haul of history.

McCain
No doubt McCain is a hero and suffered greatly for our country. For this he deserves our praise and deepest respect. However, this in an of itself does not make him a good presidential candidate nor ensure he will be a good president.

President Bush, Senator McCain and many of the GOP senators and congressmen have betrayed the Republican party and operated outside of most of the GOP's principles. What happened to smaller government; fewer entitlement programs; protecting the Constitution; less taxes; less spending; a strong defense; rule of law; personal responsibility; etc? Betrayal of these principles by the incumbents is why the Democrats/Socialists have taken the reins. No one could see a difference between the members of either party save the war and possibly taxes.

Since the GOP thought no more of we grass root Republicans than to put forth candidates that no one was particularly enthralled about save maybe Mitt Romney, why should we maintain our loyalty to the party to see it destroyed even further? Even many of the incumbent senators and congressmen are bailing out!

For the first time, I feel compelled to vote for a third party candidate. There is no one else to protect our country's interests defensively and economically. We have reached the pits. I am tired of voting for "the lesser of two evils." Evil is evil!
