If you thought the immigration fiasco was something, went to you get a gander at the fireworks that are about to go off.
According to the New York Times, the White House is actually negotiating with Republicans defeat-caucus over the most politically salubrious way to wave the white flag. And why not? The Surge became fully operational almost an entire month ago. Sure, it appears to be working, but who cares about such trivialities as the fate of civilization when an election season looms. And lest you think the Times’ report is just another case of tendentious Grey Lady pseudo-reporting, Bill Kristol confirms that the White House is indeed involved in such talks with the Lugar/Domenici types. It’s always good when your caucus’ weakest members are calling out the tunes that the rest of the members dance to, right?
In his article on the subject, Kristol makes several other pointed observations:
Let me be clear: The president ordered the "surge," which only recently came to full strength and whose major operation has been going on for less than a month. If he were not to give it a chance to work, he would properly be viewed as a feckless, irresolute president, incapable of seeing his own strategy through a couple of months of controversy before abandoning it. He will have asked our soldiers to go on the offensive, assuming greater risk of casualties--and then, even though the offensive is working better than expected, will have pulled the plug on their efforts.
As they say, read the whole thing.
