Re: Where's Romney's Bio?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 6:55 AM
Patrick -- You make a good point.  I think Romney could play up his business abilities a bit more than he has.

However, I've got to disagree with your take on the FRC straw poll (not sure if you saw my post yesterday).

You wrote that once you, "Filter out the online votes ... you have a pretty organic (and one sided) protest vote for Mike Huckabee."

The probelm is; why should we filter out online votes?

According to Romney's conservative coalitions director Gary Marx, Romney's team encouraged their social conservative supporters -- even the ones who were attending in person -- to vote online (this is consistent with traditional campaign strategy which says you encourage your base to vote absentee or early).

Moreover, the Romney campaign was not aware there would be a distinction made between online votes and in-person votes.

I've not been a Romney apologist, by any stretch, but should we punish the campaign for utilizing technology?

Huckabee's support
Huckabee is a Baptist Minister. He should have a large following at this conference and be favored. If most of the people attending his speech (his followers) voted right after his speech that would be no surprise.

Huckabee is getting some press. He will get a small bump in the polls. It will be short lived. He is not shooting up in the odds in Vegas. This conference is old news. We have moved on. Further, it is one segment of the Christian Right which is still fragmented.

Huckabee has no viable strategy for winning the nomination. All he can do is provide interesting headlines and help Rudy by keeping the social conservative vote divided.

He is not running for President anyway. He is hoping for a shot at VP or a cabinet position.

Should Huckabee be punished
for the 66% of his votes that were cast online?

What about everybody else?

5775 total votes
952 where made in person.

3000 people there.

Every candidate got more votes online.

Mitt the leverage buyout king
romney is probably downplaying his business acumen for a reason. He made his money in leveraged buyouts - he ran businesses into the ground while making his millions off of them. His "business acumen" included throwing people out of work. This is what we want for America? We've already GOT that kind of "businessman" in Bush, and look just how effectively HE'S run this country into the ground. Our debt is at an all time high - beyond reason many times over. Our grandkids will be paying off Bush's debt. And probably their grandkids as well.

Romney's company bought Damon Corp which was later charged with defrauding the government out of $25 Million - while Romney's Bain profited nicely in the deal. Of course, Mitt claimed he was on the Fed's side, but that has never been proven (naturally).

Regarding Mitt: "I don't know," says an elderly man in Merrimack, reflecting the legacy of the Bush years. "These rich guys always promise not to spend. I don't trust 'em anymore."

Sounds like he has Romney's number.
