Live from the Hill-- GOP Revolt

Hey, everyone. I'm here on Capitol Hill, just off the House floor watching the GOP's second day of revolt against Speaker Pelosi for adjourning to August recess without a up or down vote on energy.
About 20 House Republicans held a short press conference at 10am bashing Pelosi for taking off for 5 weeks of vacation without doing anything on energy. "This is the beginning of a sustained effort" to bring Congress back for a vote said Rep. Mike Pence (R.-Ind.).
Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R.-Tenn.) said it was critical Congress do something now, especially because school would be starting soon and school districts were having trouble because "making school buses and those budgets fit is difficult" with the rising price of energy.
Much to the chagrin of Capitol Hill press, the conference ended with no question and answer session. "Tell the Speaker to bring Congress back and we can answer questions," said one of the members.
The GOP is taking to the House floor now, sans microphones and cameras since Pelosi shut it off, to talk directly with Capitol Hill visitors about energy.
I can tell you, this is going to be a full-week assault. A GOP aide showed me a week-long schedule of GOP floor speaking dates on energy while the rest of Congress is on their 5-week taxpayer paid vacation. I'll try to share that schedule with you later. If your congressman isn't on it, you should give their office call!
I'll keep you updated...

Thank you for your replies; they definitely give me some things to think about. |

Let me respond to your comment to VP. Maybe this will help you understand how simple us 3rd party people see it.
First, we are not "true" Republicans. We are conservatives. We used to be 60% of the GOP when the GOP accounted for 38-39% of all voters. Now we are just conservatives.
Second, we are the bulk of the independents now that Bush and McCain have trashed the brand. You should be selling McCain to us instead of accusing us of being disloyal Republicans (see my first point).
Third, you are succumbing to irrational fear by assuming that Obama will bring about the changes you listed, the very changes McCain became famous for as a "lousy senator, terrible Republican". If Obama had co-authored Obama-Feingold, Obama-Kennedy, Obama-Lieberman and was the mastermind of the Gang of 14 and other toxic liberal bills and efforts, there would be nothing to discuss. But those bills were co-authored by the Democratic Party Trojan Horse. So he is no better than Obama and I would argue that he would be worse.
If Obama is elected, we can immediately get to work fighting amnesty, Cap and Trade and the rest of the liberal agenda. If McCain gets elected, he will freeze the conservatives in Congress and bring about the same programs you fear. How do I know? That is why they call McCain "the maverick"! That is what he does! He doesn't have any conservative friends. They are all liberal Dems and liberal Republicans like Lindsay Graham.
We are going to have a very liberal president soon and the only hope we have to stymie the globalist agenda is to make sure they don't come anywhere near winning a mandate. Voting 3rd party (just pick one, it doesn't matter which one) is the only option that will accomplish.
Don't buy into the fear-mongering and race-baiting. We aren't voting for the survival of mankind. We are electing a president. We have elected much worse than either of these candidates and survived. |

The way I see it, McCain and Obama are headed for the same place, the only difference is the speed we get there. They both want to make citizens of illegal aliens, they both support economy-killing carbon taxes. The one place McCain is trying to appear different, national security, he belies his rhetoric with his refusal to support immigration enforcement and border security.
Yes, Obama is worse. McCain is simply not much better, certainly not good enough.
I understand the noseholders, I once was one. My line has been crossed. I do not consider myself a Republican any longer. The party left me when they nominated an amnesty candidate.
Everyone should vote as they see fit, whether it is Barr, Baldwin, McCain, Nader or Obama. The first two are conservatives, the last three are not.

I see what you are saying. At the same time, I can't help but wonder what you think of the Dems and their stand on illegals. They are no better, yet you believe we should vote third party or be considered a RINO.
If we vote third party, Obama is sure to win, and I don't think I can stomach that. As a person from Illinois, I have disliked Obama for more years than most on here. He will work for amnesty, increased socialism, appoint true lefties to the court, etc. We will have a long time coming back from that.
Barak Obama is a dangerous man. He is as left wing as they come. I know you believe we can come back from anything, and I hope you are right. I am not so sure, however.
While I agree we should keep heat on the Republican party, I am not sure throwing the baby out with the bath water is a good idea.
One of the biggest problems in this country is too many people have become soft and lazy. They would rather the government do what they should do for themselves. Everyone seems to want their "piece of the pie." When so many people pay little to no taxes...how do you counter that effectively? I am really interested in your answers.
I am sick of some of the third party advocates calling those who may vote for John McCain names and acting like they are the only true Republicans. They gain no converts when they become just as hateful as the lefties on here. I have not decided for whom I will vote (although I can say with certainty it won't be Obama), but none of the third party candidates are that appealing either. |

The Republican Party under GWB seems intent on political suicide. Pandering to citizens of other countries illegally in our country while telling us we must be vigilantes if we object to illegal aliens ignoring our borders and laws. Mel Martinez was RNC Chairman to ensure an open borders candidate in '08. The cheap labor express will be kept running, regardless of the consequences, to party or country.

You are right... The (R) controlled the House for 12 years (1994-2006) and the Senate 1994-2000 and 2003-2006.
They still have no excuss for not leading. They REFUSE to be the majority, always acting like the minority. |
|
|
I hear you loud and clear! Lets hope this new batch of repubs have learned through others mistakes. |
|
I agree. The Republican Party has lost it's way. I hope we can reject these RINO's we have elected and return the prinicples we believe in. The only thing I disagree is that we have not had 8 years of control and did nothing on energy. The Dem's have been in control of Congress and Republicans have put up some energy bills that have been tossed |
|
Too bad it took you Repubs so long to grow some balls.
Too bad you do not know how to be the party in charge.
Too bad you had 8 years of control and did nothing on energy.
Too bad you lost your conservative base.
Too bad you spent money while in power like drunken sailors (no offense to drunken sailors).
You ALL deserve to be thrown out!!!
We got a Ronald, because we had a Jimmy.
To hell with all of you self centered elitist cowards. |
|
...Never seen so many home runs out of one pitch. But she's been dispatched...
Maybe the Repubs have finally found a grassroots issue that will reaffirm their base. Even rational Demonrats (there's always hope they exist) understand they need energy, and Imperial, Royal attitudes by the Party of Coercion and Taxation (the Demonrats) will never be sympathetic or compassionate to their needs.
Welcome back, Repubs! |

"How can half of America be so dumb?"
You know, I ask myself that every day when I read your posts. |
|
There might be a Jewish boogie man under your bed!
So the GOP doesn't work for you? Pray tell how the Dems do work for you. I am interested in knowing. |
|
This is the kind of gutsy move that I would like to see a LOT more of from my party. Nancy Pelosi needs to be exposed for the fraud she is.
Go Mike Pence! (I'm from Indiana, too.) |
|
|
I would agree, half of America is dumb... your half. |

Kimberly, top of the morning, are you "digging" this? You know, we left england to find our groove. Our forefathers knew better. Oh Yeah!!
Amanda always brings us the "hotest" news in town. Kudos! |

In my district, it is a contract-negotiation year. We have already been told that we better not expect much because the budget for transportation is going to have to be increased greatly.
The left who seems to be fine with the high fuel prices is going to negatively affect teachers' salaries all over the country. Personally, I think it is great that the teacher's unions that have blindly supported the left are about to be bitten right in the backside by them! |
|
As I said before, weed out the RINOs, use energy as a weapon against the libs and you might actually get a movement going.
As for Mike Pence - that guy has a bright future. |

How about if the President made a plea for people to drive 55 and not take unnecessary trips? Get out and walk more, ride a bike. He does a lot of biking himself. He should exploit that. |
