From The Hotline Blogometer: Conservatives Reject McCain
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 6:42 PM
From today's edition:

MCCAIN: A Conservative Nightmare?

With the latest CNN/Opinion Research national poll showing McCain surging, conservative bloggers are ratcheting up their attacks on the AZ senator:

Right Wing News' John Hawkins: "McCain supports amnesty for illegal aliens, was behind the Gang of 14, is a gun grabber, opposed the Bush tax cuts, ran roughshod over the Constitution with McCain-Feingold Campaign Finance Reform, opposes a Constitutional amendment to protect marriage, was rumored to be considering switching parties multiple times, talked with John Kerry about being his Vice-President, lines up with the global warming alarmists, wants to close Gitmo, wants to coddle captured terrorists -- you can go on and on with this...In other words, we're talking about a man who could fairly be called a Rockefeller Republican, a Country Club Republican, a RINO, or just a toweringly arrogant, out of touch D.C. insider who seems to assume that any position he takes is right solely because he happens to hold it. However, what John McCain cannot fairly be called is a conservative."

Townhall's Hugh Hewitt: "A GOP vote for McCain is a vote for a shattered base and a desultory campaign in the fall. It is a vote for lecture after lecture on global warming, campaign finance reform, and the bridge to nowhere. It is a vote for an old warrior way past his prime and the prospect of three debates against Barack Obama in which the age and energy gap goes unremarked upon while devastatingly obvious."

NRO's Mark Levin: "There's a reason some of John McCain's conservative supporters avoid discussing his record. They want to talk about his personal story, his position on the surge, his supposed electability. But whenever the rest of his career comes up, the knee-jerk reply is to characterize the inquiries as attacks. The McCain domestic record is a disaster."

NRO's Mark Steyn: "John McCain demonizes Big Pharma -- i.e., the private pharmaceutical companies that create, develop, and manufacture the drugs that all these socialized health-care systems in every corner of the planet are utterly dependent on. He voted for Sarbanes-Oxley, a quintessential congressional overreaction (to Enron) that buries American companies in wasteful paperwork and hands huge advantages to stock exchanges in London, Hong Kong, and elsewhere...McCain is also gung ho for all the most economically disruptive Big Government solutions to 'climate change'...McCain has an almost Edwardsian contempt for capitalism, for the people whose wit and innovation generate the revenue that pay for your average small-state senator's retinue of staffers worthy of a Persian Gulf emir."

NRO's Kathryn Jean Lopez: "John McCain has been stalwart on the surge in Iraq. We owe him for that -- he was the D.C. leader articulating what the White House often didn't. But as important as it was and is, the surge isn't the sum-total of U.S. defense policy...Neither is the surge policy the sum-total of John McCain...when considering settling on a Republican nominee, conservatives need to consider the sum-total of a candidate. And when you look through John McCain's record -- and policies he advocates/leads on to this day -- there's plenty to disagree with."

Meanwhile, Townhall's Patrick Ruffini calls McCain "a tax-loving, free speech-crushing, amnesty-awarding, big government Republican nominee."

Power Line's Paul Mirengoff reacts to Hugh Hewitt's interview with ex-Sen. Rick Santorum, in which Santorum excoriates McCain: "Santorum, whose conservative credentials are beyond question, makes a strong case against McCain on a number of issues near-and-dear to mainstream conservatives, and I have little doubt that a President McCain would infuriate such conservatives on more than rare occasions...Santorum complains that the MSM is building up McCain. That is true and it may even help account for his popularity. It's also likely that, if McCain becomes the Republican nominee, substantial elements of the MSM will turn on him. But McCain is a national hero whose political independence is beyond dispute (it's that independence that annoys Santorum and, to a lesser extent, me). The MSM may be able to chip at the edges of McCain's image, but lacks the ability, in my view, to tarnish it significantly. This will be particularly true as long as events in Iraq continue to validiate McCain on the surge."

Slime in South Carolina - It Begins
This is why the far right must be stopped! This smells of Warren Tompkins. Yes - Mitt Romney's advisor.
Slime-Time Begins Against McCain
January 15, 2008 7:23 PM
Eight years ago, then-Gov. George W. Bush and his allies dragged Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., and his family through the mud as their competed in the South Carolina GOP primary.
It's starting again...
An anti-McCain flier has been mailed to the voters of this state, seeking to undercut his military record. From a mysterious group called "Vietnam Veterans Against McCain."
On side one (see it HERE), an unflattering cartoon of the senator as a Vietnam War POW. The sign to his cell reads: "McCain Headquarters," with political signs tossed on the floor reading: "McCain: I'm a Hero" and "McCain: Elect Me" Graffiti on the cell walls read: "Hanoi Hilton," "Songbird" and "An Enormous Crime, the POWs I Helped Leave Behind," "Elect Me, elect me, elect me, "POW for President," "The Rabbit Hurt Me, the Cat Broke Me, But Bui Tin Loved Me."
Pretty nasty stuff.
The other side of the flier (read it HERE) assails McCain's record as a pilot, and says "For years McCain has been an unchecked master at manipulating an overly friendly and biased news media. The former POW turned Congressman, turned US Senator has managed to gloss over his failures as a pilot and his collaborations with the enemy to become America's POW hero presidential candidate."

It goes on from there.

Things get nasty in South Carolina.

Take Two

We have run out of time on the illegal alien inundation. We either stop it now or we lose our country. McCain won't do it. He thinks it's impossible to enforce our laws. I want someone who doesn't.

The GOP cedes their best issues by running McCain. He agrees with Hillary on Gore-bull warming, gays, guns, and amnesty. I want someone who doesn't.

America is worth saving. Vote conservative.

Frighted Right Wing.....
We all know a right wing crazy can't win. But you know that and that's exactly what you want. You are a tiny percentage of voters; just as the crazies on the left are a tiny percentage of voters. I actually think you all sleep in the same bed at night. Independent thinking voters will take this election. My hope is they will look to the right. I believe independents tend to be right of center and are, quite frankly, sick of all of you trying to tell us how "enlightened" you are. We need some rational thinking fiscal conservatives...by the way....McCain was one of only 2 who had the courage to tell the "conservatives" that they were "failing" America by not cutting spending along with the tax cuts. It was the rest of the Republicans who were and continue to be hypocrites! Who do you think you are fooling. Here's a toast to those smart enough to think for themselves.

McCain is a disaster for the GOP
Note that I say he IS a disaster. Not that he will be a disaster. He has already been a disaster.

McCain-Feingold.

McCain- Kennedy.

Sarbanes-Oxley.

Gang of Seven.

Opposed the tax cuts.

Wants to close Gitmo.

Wants trials in civilian courts for terrorists.

Supports more government control of private business and private lives to combat mythological anthropogenic global warming.

Opposes drilling ANWR. No "comprehensive" energy plan from the man who wrote "comprehensive" amnesty.

This guy is a traitor to conservatism and will NOT be rewarded for it. If the GOP is dumb enough to nominate this back-stabber the conservative base will not only sit out the Presidential election, we will sit out the entire campaign, and the results will make 2006 look like a victory in comparison.

McCainiacs should stop a moment and ask themselves why the MSM, which we know is blatantly liberal, continues to support this guy. It isn't because he's conservative. It's because he's their b*tch.

And those "polls" McCainiacs keep citing as evidence he is catching on? Push polls. A creation of the same liberal MSM that wants to beat the GOP in 2008 by conning us into nominating a guy they know we don't want.

Don't be a chump. Dump McCain.

The Right Wing Crazies......
Sounds to me like a little panic is setting in. What will they all do when they don't' get their way. Of course, they will lie, lie and lie in efforts to destroy anyone who understands that you MUST work with others. I always find it amazing that it is this group of "values" conservatives that will slit anyones throat to get what they want. What does Jesus think of this....Hugh....I'm talking to you, Warren Tompkins and the like....I'm right of center but Jeseus tells me that it's not good to destroy people for political gain. Maybe you pray to false gods. I know mine is the real one.

Beckwith's point is that folks who take their theology seriously, like Evangelicals, reject Mormonism not out of bigotry, but out of theological convition, and this is a good thing.

The bigot nonsense is just dishonest cowardice.

Thanks for the Novak link. I'll definitely keep that in mind. I won't be convinced until I see more data, from impartial sources, but this is good. Thank you.

On Hewitt's non-Evangelicism, that Sullivan schooled him so convincingly is certainly one small indicator, but it's Hugh's actions that really make the point.

Beckwith actually upholds strong theology and rejection of other faiths based on that over and above the pseudo-tolerance of liberals.

(Once-)evangelical scholar Beckwith:
"They actually believe that theological claims could be true and are worth disputing about. I think this is healthy and refreshing. It is much better than the namby-pamby "religion is private" mantra, the patronizing pablum offered to those to which elites love to condescend.

"Because religion is thought by many to be no different than matters of taste and personal hobbies, it seems downright rude for anyone to suggest that another's religious beliefs are mistaken. For such people, "intolerance" is equivalent to merely believing that one is correct on a theological topic. But, ironically, this is a form of intolerance, for it is saying that there is only one way to think of theology, namely, that it cannot in principle be true and it is on the same level of personal preferences such as tastes in food, sports, etc. This, it seems to me, is far worse than theologically-shaped anti-Catholicism and anti-Mormonism, since, in both cases, they implicitly respect their opposition by taking their theologies and their beliefs seriously."
Guy In New Jersey writes: Tuesday, January, 15, 2008 2:53 PM
(Once-)evangelical scholar Beckwith--
who returned to the Catholicism of his youth last year, explains why he's not offended by evangelists who strongly reject Catholicism, prefering them to the tolerance-above-all-else group:

"As someone who was a Protestant Evangelical (and a former president of the Evangelical Theological Society) who came out of Catholicism as a young teen and recently returned to the Church (May 2007), I think too much is made of anti-Catholicism that is borne of theological beliefs. It one thing to think that the Pope will take over America and bring his "medievel ideas" with him (as mid-20th century nativists believed), but is quite another to think that Catholicism is a mistaken theological point of view bested by the Protestant Reformation.
That is where people like Hagee are coming from. I think they are wrong, of course. But they are not bad people. They are people who take theology seriously."

Thank you, JOE...
Thank you, Joe
Because I have identified your pathos (shared with others, i.e. "synthesizer", "BrianAkita-woof-woof") as manifest in your obsessive caterwalling for McCain, and, against Mitt Romney, I have made my decision as to who I am dead set against.

Any force which exerts itself as strong as you, "Akita-woof-woof", and "synthesizer", finds a counterforce----you've helped me to solidify a counterforce. Now that i feel this strong in fighting against McCain, this eliminates, for me, one additional candidate.

I could not vote for this candidate who:

1.) refuses any U.S. energy independence by drilling in ANWR, a place no human shall reside in.
2.) refused the tax cuts of 2003 which brought us well over 4 year of solid and substantive economic growth.
3.) SUPPPORTS the advocacy of the U.S. buying pharmaceuticals from Canada, a socialist healthcare system. In doing so, it steals from those U.S. companies who do ALL of the R&D (Canadian pharm. companies do NO R&D) which brings about new and cutting edge drugs. These U.S. pharm. companies SELL their drugs at huge losses already to several countries in Africa in effort to stem diseases such as AIDS, Ebola, and others. WE---the USA already subsidize drug costs in our philanthropic efforts.
4.) VAPORIZED, through "campaign finance reform" any chance for a non-millionaire, non-billionaire, to become a serious contender candidate in general elections. HE DESTROYED THIS---and brought into being the era of Moveon.org's, Mediamatters, etc. What a pathetic consequence.

I respect McCain for his military service. I respect his opinion. I have, to date, not given serious support for any single person. JOE, you have ended this for me. You and your redundantly vocal cadre of "hate-Mitt speakers", and, "vote-for-McCain" chatter has prompted me to turn away completely from John McCain.

Joe, thank you for that.

Securing the border and enforcing the law is the only way we get to keep our rule of law, our representative Republic, and our Constitution. We must elect a President who WILL secure the border and enforce the law. If citizenship becomes meaningless, this will no longer be the United States of America.

The so-called "top tier" will not get out the voters necessary for a GOP win. Increasing turnout is the key. Give people something to vote for. Not just the lesser of two evils. Won't work this time. People are fed up with the inundation of illegal aliens. They would come out in droves for the clear choice of D=amnesty or R=enforcement. They will stay home if they both equal amnesty.

There is a huge majority of American citizens waiting for someone to pledge to uphold the laws and secure the borders, let's not ignore them any more.

Huckabee a SBC denominational moderate
Jorge, no problem. Novak:

...Baptist minister Rick Scarborough...said, “I acknowledge that Huckabee is not the perfect candidate” but one “who will listen to wise counsel.” Scarborough and Huckabee clashed during the Baptist Wars. Fighting to drive the liberals from the temple, Scarborough was badly defeated for president of the Baptist General Convention of Texas while Huckabee embraced the liberal church establishment to become president of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention.

Judge Pressler, leading the Southern Baptist “Conservative Resurgence” in the late '70s, agreed with Scarborough about Huckabee's orientation and went a different route in current presidential politics. When Huckabee on Nov. 9 announced Southern Baptist leaders supporting him, Pressler was not on the list and on Dec. 7 endorsed Thompson instead.

...Huckabee confirmed reports from people who know him that his good-natured facade conceals thin-skinned irritability. The candidate jumped Pressler with bitter complaints.

Shortly thereafter, bitterness was demonstrated by an interview with Zev Chafets of The New York Times. Huckabee was irritated that Richard Land, a prestigious Southern Baptist leader, had not endorsed him. “Richard Land swoons for Fred Thompson,” he said, though Land as a policy endorses nobody.

...Huckabee's jumping Pressler two months ago did not deter the judge from telling me this week...: “I don't know of conservative appointments he made, and I don't know of any contribution to the conservatives.” After Huckabee's warm greeting in Houston Tuesday, however, Pressler told me: “I would never do anything to hurt him.” He did not go so far as endorsing Huckabee for president, and that sends a strong message to conservative evangelicals.

All of the comments about the religious topic of the trinity is interesting, however we are not electing a Pastor in Chief.

To me the difference between the 3 in 1 vs 3 separate is a pretty small issue for a President compared to the other issues in the world such as the economy, borders, terrorism and the like.

Please everyone, leave your preaching to the religious blogs or your church of choice.

The MOST INTERESTING part about Michigan
will be what happens to McCain after he loses?

Right now, all that McCain has going for him in Conservative Bastions like SC is MOMENTUM. He also has the entire MSM ORGASMIC over him (they know he will lose the general badly) and they are bombarding us with bogus polls showing how he can beat any Democrat.

But if McCain loses Michigan to Romney, and then loses SC to Romney/Huckabee/Thompson, he is finished IMHO.

If Romney wins Michigan and rides that to a win in SC, it is over. He WILL BE the nominee.

It is the same as 2000. McCain can ONLY win when DEMOCRACTS crash the Republican Primary Party in these uber-rediculous "open" states.

And who seriously thinks those Democrats voting for McCain in the Primary would actually vote for him in the general when given the choice of voting for an actual Democrat or McCain?

THE WEATHER OUTSIDE IS FRIGHTFUL:

It's gonna be miserable in Michigan today. Temps around 28 and 1 to 2 inches of snow (3 to 5 inches where lake-effect snows occur). This means that mischievous Dems are more likely to stay him that fight their way out just to cause trouble.

Also, DailyKos is actually encouraging the activist-types to vote for Romney to keep the race tight.

I'll take a stab at your questions. They're scattered across a few posts, so I may miss a part, but here goes.

Trinity

The Doctrine of the Trinity is considered core Christian doctrine, and any one or group that denies it will be theologically suspect to a large group of people in this country. This confidence, or lack thereof, in a candidate, will be, obviously, more or less important depending on region, but for national office is pretty important.

I don't know too much about the details, but I understand that Jefferson at least made an attempt to keep his unorthodox beliefs low key, and did attend an Anglican/Episcopal church regularly, even though he was a Unitarian. To the extent that his views were known, he did catch quite a bit of flack for them.

So, even the exceptional man that he was, the unorthodoxy of his belief about the Trinity was problematic. As an aside, I'm not sure I'd rely on a Unitarian for my theological support.

As far as scripture, this has been hammered out for, what 1700 years or so, and the position of the orthodox church -- Eastern, Roman and Protestant -- is that it is a core doctrine.

God's Hand in Katrina

Whether God actively caused Katrina as part of judgement, whether he purposefully didn't prevent it for the same, or whether it was unrelated to any judgement ("act of nature"), depends partly on one's doctrine of providence. Let's assume His full sovereignty.

Assuming His hand in it, it's pretty hard to say why. Could it have been a judgement? Yes, God is sovereign. Could it have not been? Yes, God is sovereign.

Who is right? God knows. Beyond that, I don't, and I doubt any of us here do, either.

We do know something. "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."

Do you love God, Rayfinn? That's the important question.

(Good night, all)

Some like Huckabee want it both ways! Huck is like Al Gore, another Elmer Gantry. What a panderer! Was Christ schizophrenic when he prayed fervently in the Garden of Gethsemane " Saying, Father, if thou be willing, a remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done"? Luke 22:42

If Christ be also Father, then why two different wills?

Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. John 14:28

Let me see, the Father is greater than Christ, but are they not the same thing..

I believe in the Three, but not like in 3-in-one oil. I can give other examples of the ridiculousness of this MAN made doctrine. No creedal Christian will show me "trinity" in a King James or prior version. Maybe it is because it is not there. There are many Christians who do not blindly observe pagan traditions like Easter eggs, or the "trinity".

Jefferson, a pretty fair President was not a trinity creedal either.Ironically, in spite of the attacks on Jefferson's faith, evangelicals flocked to support Jefferson because they favored the end of tax support for established churches—which meant freedom for their independent churches—as passionately as did he. We sure suffered under Jefferson. Actually we did, we got the Louisiana Purchase, from which came Arkansas, Bill, Hillary, and Huckabee. Cursed we were for electing Jefferson!

Theology should not be an issue, but since you and others bring it up so much, my challenge is still not taken by anyone. I like, Jefferson consider the trinity a man made doctrine. The word trinity is not found anywhere in my King James Bible which is the inerrant word of God. Kindly point me to Book, Chapter and Verse where it is, including Latin Vulgate version or the Greek original.

As the Church Fathers adapted Christianity to Mediterranean-primarily Greek-forms of thought, they contrived doctrines altogether foreign to Biblical thought, such as the doctrine of the Trinity. Jefferson assumed that a thoroughly reformed Christian faith, true to Jesus' teaching, would be purged of all Greek influence and doctrinal absurdity.

I love it when someone wants to bring up religion.
OK Romney is LDS. Big whoop.
I am a baptized Methodist but like Thomas Jefferson doe not believe in the creedal trinity.
Just to show you the fallacy of your religion. I, like Thomas Jefferson, reject the Platonistic Trinity that was inculcated into Christianity long after Christ was on the Earth. Now I defy you to show me the word Trinity in the King James or earlier versions of the Bible. That book is inerrant and if the word Trinity is not in there, then it is a man made doctrine. Go ahead and give me chapter and verse for the word Trinity. I will even accept it in Greek. Possibly you are not a Christian since you adhere to a doctrine of man made origin??? By the way Jefferson cut out the red letter words of Christ and pasted into a book and used them to live by. This is a man who studied the Bible in Hebrew and Greek as well. He too claimed to be a Christian, but since he focused on the “words of Christ”, I am sure he is disqualified by you as well.

You are right, tell Sarah to stop making sense and telling lies. The MLK thing is old news and proven false at that. Informed people at least keep up with the truth and admit when they run contrary to it.

From what I have seen so far the Huckster is relying on the bigot vote. Fred Thompson was spot on calling him a Liberal. Not only will he not admit the proven role of influence he had in releasing Wayne Drumond. he attacked the raped and murdered girl's poor mother on tv.
Statement from Lois Davidson, Mother of Killer's Victim, in Response to Governor Huckabee

Lois Davidson, whose daughter Carole Sue Shields was raped and killed in 2000 by a criminal whose release

# "Last night, Mike Huckabee accused me of being exploited and used for political purposes. I assure you, Mr. Huckabee, I am not being exploited. I am fully aware of the actions I have taken in attempting to inform the public of your role in my daughter's rape and murder. I have spent over 7 years thinking about this.
# "I am not a dupe. But you, Governor Huckabee, were duped time and again by convicted felons who once released from prison by you began hurting people again.
# "Mr. Huckabee, I am not a victim. However, my daughter was a victim. She was raped and murdered by a serial rapist that you wanted freed from prison. Please be honest about the role you played in releasing my daughter's killer."

Huckabee's dismissal of Davis came during an interview on the Hannity and Colmes television program following a Republican debate in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Davidson's story is the subject of an ad aired in South Carolina this week focusing on Huckabee's dismal record on the rights of crime victims. The ad was developed and paid for by Victims Voice, an Arkansas-based victims advocacy group and can be viewed on the Victims Voice Web site at http://www.victimsvoice527.com.

Shirley Basore, 72, says she was sitting in the hairdresser’s chair in wealthy Grosse Pointe, Mich., back in 1963 when a rumpus started and she discovered that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and her governor, George Romney, were marching for civil rights — right past the window.

With the cape still around her neck, Basore went outside and joined the parade.

“They were hand in hand,” recalled Basore, a former high-school English teacher. “They led the march. We all swung our hands, and they held their hands up above everybody else’s.”

She remembered the late governor as “extremely handsome.”

Until this week, that was just a vivid memory for a sweet retiree who now lives in Pompano Beach, Fla.

Fortunately many of my Evangelical friends here in Missouri are really looking at the records and are voting for Romney. Of course we here in Missouri have a raped and murdered victim thanks to Huckabee pushing for Wayne Drumond's parole.

This from the public record that Huckabee could not destroy like hard drives with evidence on them.

might feel good but it will give you Hillary or Obama in the fall - and that is a guarantee! Mitt can't beat a democrat in the fall, he is the status quo voters are working to change i.e. rich republican with a business background who wants to increase troops in Iraq even though neither his 5 sons nor himself ever served in the military. He is also linked to the LDS racist and sexist policies - and lets not mention he makes up NRA endorsements and "sees" his parents marching with MLK. Mitt can't make a closing argument to americans in the fall - he is the independents second choice and a no can do choice for 65% of evangelicals and social conservatives who want a pro-life candidate. He can't unite the center-right and 48% of americans said under no circumstances would they vote for him. This is Romney's sad reality and Mitt's mission impossible!

Mitt Romney is the WEAKEST candidate
As a wealthy corporate multi-millionaire tycoon who favors the rich and is out-of-touch with poor and middle class voters, Mitt Romney would get KILLED in the general elction against a Democrat.

ALL of the arguments that Democrats LOVE to use against Republicans (wealthy, greedy, selfish, favors the rich, out-of-touch, hurts the poor, hurts the middle class etc.) would be used most effectively against Romney with results that would be DEVASTATING for the Republican party. Indeed, the Democrats would win in a landslide, make that an avalanche, as the Republican party would be CRUSHED... shades of 1992.

For this reason, Mitt Romney is the WEAKEST candidate.

It would be much more difficult for the Democrats to use those traditional Democratic arguments against McCain or Huckabee. Hence, McCain or Huckabee is the Republican Party's best bet for victory in the general election. If the Republican Party is interested in victory, that is.

Grover Norquist on McCain
“In 2000, we criticized McCain’s call for campaign finance reform,” Norquist noted in an e-mail message. “The whole movement was concerned with that issue — the NRA, Right to Life, Right to Work, American Conservative Union, most business groups.

“Today, McCain is calling for continuing the Bush tax cuts — that is leading with a $2 trillion tax cut,” Norquist added.

So instead of trying to defeat McCain, Norquist has simply declared victory and welcomed him as a convert to the cause.

Mitt at 35% McCain at 29%
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has taken a 6% lead over U.S. Sen. John McCain according to results of a tracking poll conducted Saturday, Sunday and Monday, January 12-14, 2008. Romney leads with 35% to McCain’s 29%. Mike Huckabee is third at 12%. Rudy Giuliani (3%) and Ron Paul (4%) have both dropped while Fred Thompson (4%), and Duncan Hunter (2%) have stayed the same since last night’s tracking. Seven percent say they will vote “uncommitted” while 4% are undecided.

The telephone tracking poll of likely voters in the Michigan Republican Primary Election is being conducted by Mitchell Interactive. Mitchell Interactive is an East Lansing, Michigan and Washington, DC based national political polling and market research company. The survey of 589 likely Republican Presidential Primary voters has a margin of error of +-4.1% at the 95% level of confidence.

“As the undecided voters make up their minds, more are turning to Mitt Romney than to John McCain. We have also seen the participation among Republicans increase to 80% at the end of phoning tonight. That means that 80% of the voters taking part in the GOP Primary identify themselves as Republicans,” Steve Mitchell, president of Mitchell Interactive said.

“Romney is very strong with older voters. He loses among 18-39 year olds, ties with 40-59 year olds, and wins by a big margin with voters 60 and over, the same voters who remember his father, Gov. George Romney, the best,” Mitchell said.

Hugh and Rush have both sold out. They attack anyone who is against Romney and the current confusion of the sheeple is now back firing as McCain (the most liberal candidate, even more so then Rino Romney) is now been revived as the confused look for somone other then Romney to back.

Did you ever ask yourself which candidates the most liberal states like? Look at NH and MI, the fight is between Romney and McCain because they appeal to the most liberal voters. In the South you see people choosing between Huckabee and Fred because they are Red states. Why is it that Romney and McCain are more popular in Blue states?

Spends some time on YouTube and listen to the candidates and find out what they are really saying for themselves. You'll see that Huckabee is not the liberal demon he's made out to be, that Romney is actually as liberal as McCain, and that Fred is a true conservative who really is working hard to win the nomination in spite of the way Rush and Hugh portray him as lazy.

Sadly, the best hope for conservatives in MI right now is Huckabee. If somehow he can win that will open SC for a battle between Fred and Huckabee since it will weaken the two leading liberals (Romney and McCain). Fred can't win MI, he's too far down, but Huckabee is in striking distance and that's better then RINO Romney or McCain gaining strength. Don't be fooled by the Romney shills, he is not much better then McCain. He is the guy trying to buy the election, the blue state governor who remade himself to be able to run as a Republican.

Well, like on a number of other issues, Romney has changed his position on immigration. Romney expressed support for the Kennedy/Mccain "Amnesty Bill" (although he later claimed to oppose it). He called the amnesty bill "reasonable" and specifically said that it wasn't amnesty. He even went so far as to say (according to the Associated Press) that Republicans who didn't vote for it had "made a big mistake".
Most tellingly, it was under Romney's leadership that the cities of Brewster, Brookline, Cambridge, Lexington, Orleans, and Somerville (all of which officially declared themselves to be sanctuary cities) openly flouted federal immigration laws and acted as safe havens for illegal immigrants .
That's why all of Hewitt's pronouncements of Mitt being the "true conservative" ring so hollow. Despite all the spinning, Mitt's record on immigration is just as bad as Mccain's.
I think that alot of conservatives are rallying around Mitt because he's handsome, he's photogenic etc etc... but I think that this is a big mistake. There is nothing there. As I pointed out earlier, his record is completely at odds with his current platform. It's just like Kerry's tortured convoluted flip-flopping on Iraq in '04. Not Huckabee ever!
One more thought about Mike Huckabee....

There is a large difference between a Sunday sermon and the highest political office in the land. Sermons are easy enough, running a nation is not about words and phrases that can roll off the tongue. It’s about actions that President’s have to take and in some instances it runs counter to whatever religion you have under your belt.

Usually the religion bashing is by the Liberals. It is as if Christians are the ones being intolerant. This being said, I suppose it makes sense considering that Mike Huckabee is a Liberal when it comes to Fiscal Conservatism and is running a campaign without substance.

"I am a conservative Republican, but I believe in democracy and the separation of church and state. The conservative movement is founded on the simple tenet that people have the right to live life as they please as long as they don't hurt anyone else in the process." (Barry Goldwater in a 1994 Washington Post essay)
Joe writes: Monday, January, 14, 2008 11:17 PM
This is economic conservatism?
WMRomney:

"First, we have to tackle the problems head on. If I am your President, in my first 100 days, I will roll up my sleeves, and I will personally bring together industry, labor, Congressional and state leaders to develop a plan to rebuild America's automotive leadership. It will be one that works for Michigan and that works for the American taxpayers."Is activist government compatible with economic conservatism?

Opponents of Romney seem to be salivating at his call for an "engaged Washington," reading into that phrase a clarion call for "big government." Clearly, Romney does not believe that the best way to solve Michigan's one-state recession is to cut taxes and get out of the way, as professional conservative thinkers seem to prefer.

Jennifer Rubin accuses Romney of "mimicking Soviet industrial policy" in attempting to prop up in industry that failed entirely on its own.

Anyone but Huckabee!
McCain is in a tough spot. He needs to eliminate a few other candidates if he stands any chance of getting the nomination. McCain does best in open primaries where independents and Democrats can crossover.

Personally, I only have one Republican that I will not support if he wins the nomination. This person would be Mike Huckabee who reminds me of Jimmy Carter. I have no qualms with an President being an Evangelical, Mormon, Jewish, Muslim, or Atheist if they hold my values and don't make their religious beliefs the central aspect of their candidacy.

I will not profess to know what the outcome will be, but I do control how my single vote will go. I will use my vote in the manner that will best prevent the likes of Huckabee to ever become President.

Our country was created with a central theme of freedom of Religion and I believe that this includes all beliefs including non-Christian beliefs. Our country has many people from many different backgrounds that include different faiths and religions including non-Christians.

I understand that Mike Huckabee and other Evangelicals do not agree with Mormonism. This is fine in the realm of choosing a religion, but not acceptable in regards to choosing a President.

It would be one thing for Mike Huckabee to campaign on the issues he disagrees with Mitt Romney, but the tactics he has used is appalling. Mike Huckabee needs to decide if he has a calling to serve either as a pastor or a civil servant.

The arrogance of Hugh and some of the conservative bloggers (Nat'l Review types) has been exposed in this Presidential race.

They see themselves as smarter than the rest of the Republican Party. They think they've got it all figured out with their bloviating and pontificating.

They all figured that McCain's campaign was finished. So, they decided to ignore McCain b/c he no longer matter to them.

Lo and behold, McCain was campaigning harder than any of the other candidates and he was getting some serious traction.

Now, that Hugh and the others finally recognize that McCain is the frontrunner, it's too late.

If McCain wins Michigan tomorrow, he is the prohibitive favorite for the GOP nomination.

This will be a good smack upside the heads of the arrogant talking heads like Hugh.

Romney's morally ambiguous record
Mccain is not my first choice for the nominee (I would prefer Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter or even Alan Keyes) but if it's a dogfight between Mccain and Romney I'm gonna take Mccain every time.
I am beginning to think alot less of some talkers/ commentators who I used to admire. The Republican pundits who have been blindly defending Romney are as bad as the Democrat shills who have been blindly defending the the equally disingenuous Mrs.Clinton.
Mr. Hewitt can keep talking all day long about how bad John Mccain's record is. But it doesn't change the fact that Romney's pro-abortion, pro-gay, anti-gun, pro-Kennedy/Mccain, pro-fee,
pro-Planned Parenthood, pro-Brady Bill record is far worse. He has been given a pass on everything presumably because he looks like a "true conservative"
And now we can expect another pass from Hewitt and co. as Romney promises a socialist fix to the Michigan economy. Please people... a person is not a conservative just because they say they are a conservative. There has to be a record to back it up. And Romney's record is one of moral ambiguity and political opportunism.
Again, Mccain is not exactly my favorite person, but he is the only logical choice in this particular two-man race.

Iowa, where he had a 10X spending advantage. New Hampshire, his back yard.

Romney got spanked in both states, and has continued to spiral downwards in the polls.

The Rombots, who, irony of ironies, used to call supporters of other candidates "Kossacks" and the like, are now in the humiliating position of hoping that the Kos vote can put their candidate over the top in his home state.

"Moderate" Republican driven to madness
Ok - I am a moderate - never voted democrat in my life, but honestly agree with liberals on pro-choice (however, I am anti-abortion, and strictly anti-judicial activism.) You can argue that that position is double speak - but I think the decision should be between a mother and God. Yes it is a child, Yes it is a life - but keep the government out of our wombs - deeply between God and a woman. The fight should be on the state level - not Big Brother Beltway.

I am a constitutionalist and a libertarian. Get the government out of our schools and out of our paychecks. I also am against capital punishment. I am not 100% on board with the conservatives - but the Reagan Coalition kept me on board.

But this McCain thing is driving me crazy. He portrays himself as the honest and candid candidate. BUT HE IS TRYING TO HIJACK THE REPUBLICAN PARTY!

So what if he served honorably - so did scores of thousands of our veterans. The guy never worked outside the beltway or military his entire life. He lives in a different world than the people he wants to elect him.

This child is not going to show up for election day when he is on the ballot. I would rather let the democrats show us their stuff, so we can boot them out in 2 and 4 years when they screw everything up, than let a RINO do it.

You can balk all you want about the lesser of 2 evils. No way Jose - not happening. And I never in my wildest dreams thought I would not show up to vote against a Clinton or a Globalist.

Have fun defending him when the race is between McCain and the MSM/Clinton war room.

A true story about McCain...
In 2006, Arizona was having a gubernatorial election. The dem candidate was the incumbent Janet Napolitano, who had poll ratings in the 60's and was considered virtually unbeatable. Of course all of the media outlets in AZ drooled over her from day 1. They refused to print or air a single negative critique. In fact one of the networks did a huge profile on her showing her personal side, cooking in her home etc. right in the middle of the campaign. Do you think they were fair and balanced and also did profiles on the Republican candidate(s)? Hell no. In fact they rarely would even mention the other candidate’s names or that there was even an election approaching. It was masterful. How do I know all of this? Because I was the campaign manager for one of the 3 main Republican candidates.

The winning Republican nominee was Len Munsil, the founder of an evangelical religious-rights Christian coalition type of group. He ran under Arizona's public financing law which gave him about a million dollars to finance his general election campaign - that equates to about one television ad.

Now back to Mac. John McCain went way out on a limb and made a fantastic ad in support of this very far-right religious conservative. McCain knew that Len had a snowballs chance in hell. McCain knew that the political establishment and MSM would ridicule and dismiss his strong endorsement. Yet McCain was the one pleading with his state to support his fellow Republican.

McCain had nothing to gain. He surely didn't get any love from the fanatic wing of the Reps. Yet McCain selflessly promoted & sided with a man everyone knew would lose.

AZ has many more registered Reps than Dems yet Nappy beat Len by 25 points. McCain didn't care. He was a loyal Republican who fought for his party against all odds with nothing to gain politically. McCain was loyal. McCain was right. Is McCain the second incarnation? No. Is he a good Republican? Hell yes!
McTex writes: Monday, January, 14, 2008 9:45 PM
Who would Reagan support?
Well we actually know the answer to that. Reagan greatly admired McCain and Nancy has endorsed him saying that Ronnie would have done so as well.

But give Hugh, Rush and Levin 5 minutes and they will start trashing the Great one. They will remind us how Reagan fought for amnesty, increased taxes by 1 billion dollars in Cali., presided over tremendous gov't spending and the largest increase in the deficit in America's history. Let's not forget that Reagan almost signed a treaty with the USSR abolishing all nuclear warheads.

Reagan was a great leader because he knew where to lead this nation and when to compromise. He knew what issue took priority and what issue he was willing to sell out on. And Reagan was loved by democrats. No wonder Reagan loved McCain.

A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds John McCain leading Hillary Clinton nationally by double digits. The survey, conducted on the two nights following New Hampshire’s Primary, shows McCain attracting 49% of the vote nationwide while Clinton earns 38%.

Among Republican voters, McCain leads 86% to 6%. However, among Democrats, Clinton’s lead is a slightly less dominant 74% to 18%. McCain leads by twenty-one points among unaffiliated voters.

This is the third straight poll showing McCain ahead of Clinton. In December, the Arizona Senator led by six points. In November, he held a narrow two-point edge.

A separate national telephone survey, conducted just before New Hampshire voted, shows McCain leading Obama 46% to 43%. That’s little changed since a December poll showing McCain with a two point advantage.

Guilt: How did we ever let this happen? What did I do to allow the GOP to sink so low?

Depression: Pass me the liquor. I feel sick.

Bargaining: McCain better make things right with the base, he has to get approval from Rush, Hannity and then agree to have Fred Thompson as his running made to keep him in line (actually even I hope for that!).

Our democrat friends have used incremental steps toward a socialist state for a long time. None of the three told tearful stories of having his family ripped asunder by failed illegal abortions. Mitt Did. And none of the three ever promised to fight to protect a woman's right to abort. Phoney principles
Can we stop with the "up-or-down" vote malarkey? Please? I remember hearing Santorum sputtering about how the Repub Party only wanted to give all nominees an up-or-down vote. Baloney. When pressed on the Repub Party record during the Clinton years, he was forced to add this: "Well, an up-or-down vote if the leadership believes the Senate would approve the nominee." That was his excuse for not even giving Clinton nominees a hearing in committee. There's no principle there. It is plain party politics.

Conservatives can cry a river about the up-or-down nonsense, but they are not defending a principle. For the conservatives who believed that the Repub Congress of the 90's didn't do its job by refusing to consider many of Clinton's nominees, let alone grant an up-or-down vote, you have my respect. For everyone else, shaaadddup!

The conservative, small government
candidate in Michigan:
"But taking off all these burdens is only half the solution. If we are going to be the world's greatest economic power, we must invest in our future. It's time to be bold. First, I will make a five-fold increase – from $4 billion dollars to $20 billion dollars – in our national investment in energy research, fuel technology, materials science, and automotive technology.

"Research spins out new ideas for new products for both small and large businesses. That is exactly what has happened in health care, in defense, and in space. Look how industries in other states have thrived from the spin out of technologies from our investment in these areas. So if we can invest in health care, in defense, and in space, why not also invest in energy and fuel technology here in Michigan?"

McCain is Conservative
As the goody bag of billion-dollar pork known as "earmarks" rapidly swelled during the Bush presidency, the loudest voices against this most anti-conservative vote-buying practice were McCain and U.S. Rep. Jeff Flake - the latter a flawlessly conservative Arizona Republican who freely acknowledges his budget-hawking hero is . . . John McCain.

And explain this:

McCain has been a consistent conservative advocate regarding the most heartfelt cultural issue of the past two generations: the debate over Roe vs. Wade and abortion...

And this:

McCain has been a consistent advocate of free trade - an issue dear to the heart of free-market conservatives - as well as free-market resolutions to the spiraling cost of health care...

And then, of course, there is McCain's foreign policy, especially his long-standing, steadfast advocacy for a successful strategy in the Iraq war.

It candidly takes our breath away to witness "true blue" conservatives actually stooping to attack McCain on this count. But, shamefully, they are.

In a recent commentary on National Review Online, contributor Mark R. Levin complains that McCain seems to be taking too much credit for the "surge" of troops in Iraq early last year, and the success that resulted from it.

That is history rewritten for the rabidly anti-McCain crowd. If Levin, or anyone, can point to an elected official who risked more to make three points - send more troops, take the fight to the enemy and dump the man resisting a troop buildup, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld - we'd like Levin to point him or her out.

No, John McCain is not a perfect conservative. But let us say this about the effort to blemish his conservative authenticities:

It's perfectly wrong.

No real conservative in MI
There are no real conservatives campaigning in Michigan. Romney is leading by pandering so flagrantly as to bring back the days of Boss Tweed (A chicken in every pot!!!) How does conservative economic principals square with using the government to bail out the car industry.

I live in a state (New Jersey) like Michigan with a moribund economy, people leaving in droves, a high tax corrupt government, and a liberal former manufacturing base, just like Michigan. Why can't we get all these handouts and bailouts. Oh yeah, because our primary is three weeks later.

McCain who I support, started a little better, but even he fell into the pander pit in MI. After starting intelligently enough saying that Michigan has to retool (At the very least New Jersey always knows it has to look for the next big thing) He began dropping back into stimulus packages for Michigan, and so has Huck for that matter.

So the party of conservative fiscal discipline will start dropping a few billion here and there for all the states undergoing hard times. Isn't that social welfare by another name. If only the inner city voted Republican, then they would have some real power!!!

Hugh has publicly said he thinks Romney is the best candidate. It's his radio show and his blog. He worked very hard to build them up. He's free to agitate on behalf of the candidates he likes. Hugh is very pro-Romney and anti-McCain and anti-Huckabee. If Romney drops out tomorrow he'll be the biggest Rudy backer and if Rudy and Romeny drop, he'll be shouting for Fred.

If all three go, he'll still support McCain in the general - his heart just won't be in it.

I'm sorry, but if you believe in the free market - their is nothing wrong morally, legally or ethically - in Hugh doing what he's doing. If you want to say its a bad political tactic, it's nothing worse than what Baseball Crank and Prof. Bainbridge are doing when they post about why Romney is awful. And it's nothing worse than everyone at the Corner on everyone but their candidate.

If you can't handle playing in the big leagues and the fire that comes with it, and Hugh bothers you so much, then by all means, leave.

Although he did not explicitly refer to an increase in taxes on SUVs, his aides acknowledged that a reduction in excise taxes on hybrid vehicles would have to be accompanied by an increase in taxes on gas guzzlers in order to bring in the same amount of revenue. (Associated Press, Jan. 23, 2003.)

Caught up in the blogs
I get caught up reading the blogs and all the banter about the pundits telling us how to vote.

When the candidates were announced, I started following the various candidates. the only one that I really knew anything about was John McCain. His great sacrifice in Vietnam. His support of the war.

His criticism of the execution of the war and comments on what he would have done differently.

His participation in the "gang of 14" bucking the Republican leadership in the Senate and placing himself and six other Republicans in position to hijack the process on voting for judges, not supporting the President in getting an up or down vote.

His push to have the comprehensive immigration reform act quietly passed with little or no debate, the one that provided for Z Visas to allow illegals to "sign in with a note from their best friend" and stay in the country forever. Then "hearing the people' that we wanted the fence built first. The legislation was already there.

He had been in Congress when the first amnesty mistake was made. why did it take 70% of the people calling, emailing and writing to Congress to dump the bill for him to "hear the people". Evidently he wasn't listening before that.

So, I was not listening to the pundits on talk radio when I decided to support someone else. I would not support him for President. Besides, he makes a fine Democratic Senator from Arizona (but we get to count him as a Republican to determine which party is in the majority).

WE'RE THE WORKERS HERE IN MICHIGAN TRYING TO KEEP OUR JOBS THAT WILL PAY THE PRICE FOR A MCCAIN/HUCKABEE NOMINATION--...OBVIOUSLY NOT THE REST OF YOU YAHOO LIBERALS....

GERIATRIC McCAIN AND POPULIST HUCKABEE ARE DEMOCRATIC/INDIE LIBERAL PAWNS and will run our ECONOMY HERE IN MICHIGAN, and throughout the rest of the country for that matter, INTO THE GROUND!!! (As well as everything else we conservative Republicans — AND INTELLIGENT MICHIGAN VOTERS /AMERICANS—-stand for!!)

Read what Rush Limbaugh (a TRUE CONSERVATIVE) had to say about these two liberal plants today at rushlimbaugh.com.

I just did, and WOW!! Thank goodness there are still people like Rush who actually display a wealth of intelligence and logical thinking in this day of shallow, one-dimensional politics and thought....

There are enough of us TRUE REAGAN REPUBLICANS out here in Michigan and across America that have enough COMMON SENSE and care enough what happens to our ECONOMY (among a lot of other issues like lower taxes, strong trade, strong immigration policies, strong national defense, strong families, conservative judges, generating jobs, etc., etc.) to vote for a candidate that espouses TRUE REAGAN CONSERVATIVE policies (which ARE NOT DEAD!!)!

Michigan, wake up!! I've personally listened to all the candidates (REP & DEM!), evaluated what they've said, and have determined that WITHOUT A DOUBT, that candidate is MITT ROMNEY!! ROMNEY is the ONLY candidate that can go the distance against these other liberal monkeys and that HAS and CAN make the CHANGES that our country (AND OUR ECONOMY HERE IN MICHIGAN!!) so desperately needs at this time.

I will vote for Hillary or Obama before I will vote for liberal snakes like McCain or Huckabee….. After all, what’s the difference between any of these four Socialists??

There's only one conservative
Hugh:

Each of the leading Republicans has serious chinks in his political armor, and that's what this internecine is all about.

The truth is that it's Thompson who is the closest to being a true conservative, strong on defense, low regulation and taxes, always been a social conservative. Unfortunately his campaign hasn't found traction.

So, we're left with McCain, who voted against drilling in ANWR, against the Bush tax cuts, gutted the First Amendment, sided with the Dems on illegal immigation, and excoriated Bush for his stance against the stupidity of man-made global warming. THAT'S a conservative?

Romney has the issues tacked down, but his recent conversion does give pause; plus, as I've argued on my blog, in debates it's as though he's reading from notes when he responds to questions, staring at the moderator without any hint of appealing to voters.

And, would he be able to win against Obama in places like Pennsylvania, Ohio, much less California? I doubt it, and that's scary, becaus he's arguably more liberal than Clinton.

Best,

Phil Mella

I admire what McCain did as a soldier and his support for current soldiers. However, as a conservative, wanting what's best for America, McCain is very far from ideal, especially when there are much better candidates running against him. I am quite
ashamed of this campaign against John McCain. Mind you, I endorsed Romney in my blog a month ago but more I see of his cheerleaders like Mr Hewitt and the NRO savaging a war hero, the less I am confident of the bonafides of Mitt. It is well said that a man is known by the company he keeps. I will be quite happy to have a proven warrior like McCain as my president..someone whose conservative record is not perfect but at least consistent: pro life, pro gun, pro civil liberties. Yes, imperfect on immigration and environment...but I like man who can be a man and risk saying things that he knows can cost him votes. With McCain, I know I am getting what I see...and he is the only one who seems to have a prayer against Hillary. Of course those polls (today he was 12 points ahead of shillary nationally) are rarely quoted by Mr. Hewitt and his ilk. I like Mr. Hewitt but his bashing of John McCain disappoints me greatly.

McCain Conservative on fiscal restraint
From Larry Kudlow's column: http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=OTQyODBlYzAyM2M2ZTYwY 2NjMzhkNGYxZjZjNzE4OTY=

McCain’s message of cutting federal spending and eliminating budget earmarks is hitting home. More and more voters seem to be worried about excess government spending, and McCain remains the favorite on this issue. But McCain is now talking more like a spending and tax cutter, drawing the endorsement of time-tested supply-sider Jack Kemp and long-term deficit-spending foe Phil Gramm, the former Texas senator. Critically, McCain has pledged to make the Bush tax cuts permanent.

Meanwhile, Sen. McCain is saying: “I told you so.” If the Bush tax cuts had been accompanied by stronger spending restraint, there would be plenty of budget room for large-scale across-the-board tax-rate cuts today.

Nevertheless, the McCain campaign is looking carefully at a possible corporate tax-cut proposal, as well as an elimination of the dividend tax as a means of ending the double tax on corporate profits. They’re also expected to unveil some new economic proposals in Michigan that would include a strong free-trade component.

As one McCain insider told me, “John is the strongest free trader in the country today, but never seems to get much credit for it.”

In defense of Mitt, Reagan did similar
things for the auto industry. Reagan got the Japanese to apply voluntary quotas on imports and he either implemented or at least didn't repeal a prohibitive tariff on Import pick-ups.

Having Wash. be a strong advocate for US industry isn't a bad thing when the playing-field is unequal. Right now it is the Chinese gov't's pegging of the yuan at too low a value. GWB and co.'s devaluing of the currency is really putting the screws to the ROC et al.

JM's support of the silly CAFE regs and the insane idea of AGW and carbon taxes is anti-american business.

BD writes: Monday, January, 14, 2008 6:55 PM
The issue with McCain
He's a "cult of personality" candidate:

He's not someone who's going to work to build a Republican majority - - - he had little use for it when he was part of it. By & large (there are exceptions, of course), the defining characteristic of his "coalition building" is he builds them with Democrats.

He's not someone who's really all that "principled" - - - other than faith in his own opinions, what is the unifying theme of his public service?

He's not particularly coherent on economics - - - against tax cuts, favors regulation, hostile to drug companies, etc.

McCain's pitch to Republicans seems largely limited to "I won't screw up the war." Hard to take it on faith when he wants to shut down Gitmo, second guess interrogation techniques & helped torpedo judicial nominees we'd like to think would be more friendly to the same than anyone the Democrats would nominate.
