Post-Primary "Agents of Intolerance"
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:18 AM
Are Yglesias and I observing the same phenomenon?
"... In one interesting possible future, McCain reaches the conclusion that he's got the GOP nomination and conservatives have nowhere to go so he brings back the "agents of intolerance" talk, maybe picks a pro-choice running mate, and makes a serious high-risk high-reward effort to definitively separate himself from the mire into which the rest of the party is sinking."

... By the way, let me state once again for the record that I never "endorsed" or "supported" John McCain in the primary.  What I did do was (1.) Refuse to be a Romney sycophant, and (2.) CORRECTLY predict that John McCain would win New Hampshire -- and that he had a good shot at the nomination (even when others were predicting he would drop out of the race by Labor Day).  Accurate campaign analysis should not be confused with support.

I also tried to be fair to him, just as I am doing now.  Even in 2007, when McCain did things like skip CPAC, for example, I criticized him for it.  I also gave him credit when he did things I thought were smart or good.

McCain's running mate
I just do not see him picking a pro-abortion running mate. The two most notable pro-abortion VP picks would be Tom Ridge and Rudy Giuliani. Rudy might help in NJ, but there is no guarantee he will help McCain win that state and there is no way McCain wins NY. Tom Ridge actually might help him McCain carry PA and help with Catholic voters. Tom Ridge's old congressional district bordered OH and might help McCain their somewhat.

But when all said is done, I think McCain would be better off with Pawlenty, Crist, Stanford, Daniels, etc.

Yes, I think that is exactly
what McCain will do. He has to separate from Bush and the republican "brand", so to speak, in order to get elected. In some ways I think conservatives are at fault here too, because they bashed him so relentlessly during the primary that he does not owe them any favors. It seems doubtful conservatives will support Obama -- or Bob Barr(?)-- so the options seem limited to staying home or voting for McCain anyway on the theory that he is at least more conservative than Obama.

Not Going To Work
Conservatives will have many options other than voting for McCain. Barr is sounding better every time I hear him. Chuck Baldwin of the Constitution Party is another. We do NOT have to vote for Amnesty John.

Again...
Lou Dobbs for POTUS!

If McCain wins the presidency all hope to stop illegal immigration is lost. The "conventional wisdom" will be that the country WANTS illegal slave labor to continue unabated.

'John McCain is a liar..."
"Put very simply: John McCain is a liar. He's a man without honor, without integrity, who could not have captured the Republican nomination had he run on making comprehensive immigration a top priority of his administration. Quite frankly, this is little different from George Bush, Sr. breaking his "Read my lips, no new taxes pledge," except that Bush's father was at least smart enough to wait until he got elected before letting all of his supporters know that he was lying to them.

Under these circumstances, I simply cannot continue to support a man like John McCain for the presidency. Since that is the case, I have already written the campaign and asked them to take me off of their mailing list and to no longer send me invitations to their teleconferences. I see no point in asking questions to a man who has no compunction about lying through his teeth on one of the most crucial election issues and then changing his position the first time he believes he can get away with it." King Liberal
Leiberman is not pro-life. He has always been pro-abortion.

Leiberman might have a position in a McCain administration but will not be the VP pick.
