Hillary-Care is Back!
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 12:49 PM

Hillary-Care
is back.  According to the WaPost:

The proposal, (Hillary) Clinton's first major effort to achieve universal health coverage since an ill-fated 1994 plan, carries a price tag of about $110 billion per year.

The centerpiece of her "American Health Choices Plan" is an "individual mandate" requiring everyone to have health insurance -- just as most states require drivers to purchase auto insurance.
The WaPost also takes the bait and says 47 million Americans are uninsured -- a number I debunked a while back ...

With 47 million Americans currently uninsured, the Democratic presidential contenders have been united in advocating universal coverage.
According to CNN, Hillary calls health care a "right":
"It is long past time that Americans and the richest of all countries realize that health care is a right and not a privilege," Clinton said at a labor forum in Chicago. "And that goes especially for people who work hard every single day."
Missing no chance to spar with Hillary, Rudy Giuliani's campaign communications director Katie Levinson sent out this statement:
“If you liked Michael Moore’s ‘Sicko,’ you’re going to love HillaryCare 2.0. Senator Clinton’s latest health scheme includes more government mandates, expensive federal subsidies and more big bureaucracy – in short, a prescription for an increase in wait times, a decrease in patient care and tax hikes to pay for it all.”

Update: 2:12 PM -  To view Governor Romney addressing "HillaryCare 2.0," go here.  To read Governor Romney's health care plan, go here.

except from brooks
The plan she unveiled Monday is much simpler than the one she came up with 14 years ago. Back then, she and her staff were like technocratic engineers, one of her advisers told me, trying to patch every last gap in their edifice. This time they were content to leave the details of the plan to Congress.

Last time, they threatened people who were satisfied with their health coverage. This time they reassure them that nothing will change. Last time, they were out of touch with the American values of choice and individual freedom. This time they emphasize those values every chance they get, never seriously considering a Canadian-style s ingle-payer system.

This time the change is evolutionary, not revolutionary. The private insurance/employer-based system will still remain the heart and soul of the social contract – it's just that more people will be given tax credits so they can afford to buy in.

The Clinton plan makes life politically difficult for Republican Mitt Romney. She relies on an individual insurance mandate. So does his plan in Massachusetts. The Clinton plan also takes the brave step of taxing the wealthy for gold-plated health care benefits – a reform that almost every Republican health expert endorses. Meanwhile, the plan seems to have driven fellow Democrat John Edwards around the bend. The statement he issued Monday qualifies as the shrillest statement issued by a major presidential candidate this year.

many conservatives
from david brooks to the fox all-stars on brit hume have said this is a sensible approach that needs some fine tuning.

it is very similiar to romneys plan for mass.

You want Universal Healthcare?
Do you really want the same government that is taking 12 to 14 weeks just to process 300,000 passports now responsible for your health care?

Now just image the wait time for 10 million people needing an MRI for a brain tumor, 14 million needing chemotherapy for their cancer, and another 30 million needing bypass surgeries.

Have fun waiting in line.. if you don't drop dead first waiting.

And do you really want the government to have to approve every doctor's appointment and medication your taking?

Keep the government OUT of your health care, and you'll live longer!

YOU NEED TO BE THE BOSS OF YOUR OWN HEALTH CARE NOT THE GOVERNMENT.. WAKE UP PEOPLE!

To the first poster "Ace" who asks why we have to be forced pay for it if it's a right (good question!): Wouldn't it be a blast if we were all forced to buy a gun as well! Hey - it's a right! (Except with health care we're being forced to pay for someone else to have the right).

Secondly, someone called Rush's show today with a good point about the hollerin' that we require auto insurance. A) It's the STATE that requires it, not the Feds, and B) It's LIABILITY insurance they require. You are not required by government to insure your personal vehicle, only to be able to cover any damage you may do unto others.

Romney and Hillary
FROM POLITICO

…“It’s sort of funny to me that [Romney] would cast it as a big government solution, when it’s essentially what he enacted in Massachusetts,” Clinton’s Senate legislative director, Laurie Rubiner, said in response to Romney, adding that the Clinton plan is based on “choice and competition.” …

Once again what is the difference?

POLITICO-Republicans Mitt Romney and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani branded it a sort of creeping socialism and an attack on states’ rights. The Democrats’ criticism was more personal: Illinois Sen. Barack Obama suggested that Clinton lacks the ability to unify Americans behind her plan; Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd said she lacks the “leadership” skill to steer it through Congress; and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, conversely, argued that she is too close to the establishment and wary of confrontation to ram a plan through Congress.

In her speech, Clinton anticipated the criticism from the right.

“It is not a government takeover of health care,” she said.

Mitt Romney, who as governor of Massachusetts signed into law a plan that similarly requires every individual to buy health insurance, complained that Clinton’s plan has too large a government role and encroaches on federalism.

Can someone explain the difference
between Clinton's plan and Romney's plan?

Serious question here: Has anyone looked at these two plans in detail?

This sounds a lot like Romney care.
What is the difference?

There has been....
....quite a few references to Orwell today. At least Hillary inspires something.
There could be some interesting moments during her push to get this through, though.
Picture Hill doing some photo op in a Detroit free clinic and bending over for a shot of penicilin.....
Priceless....

You know
That'll never happen. All the politicians will have their own facilities to go to, like they do now. Chances are the bureaucracy will get thoe perks too. George Orwell was right: "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others." ... .(that one's for you Sooth :-).)
paddy o'furniture writes: Monday, September, 17, 2007 4:16 PM
Keith...
You are correct. This is just the Hillary boondoggle part II.
The government is the last place I want my health care to be managed. My military experience alone is enough to convince me.
If going to the doctor becomes like going to the DMV, there will be people who won't go. Then they are not really getting the healthcare they need, and would arguably be worse off than before....
Americans have enough experience with government run agencies to know better.
The best test is: if the president is willing to go through the same procedures as the rest of us....

Sooth....
Perhaps, but e.e. cummings I am not...
That Berekely reference is dangerously close to fighting words...., but I know you were only joking....
See how easy....? :-)
FYI, last month in Berserkeley, several students took up residence IN TREES outside the football stadium to prevent the university from cutting them down to make room for a new athletic building. I just love stories like that....
People like that are the reason the good Lord gave us napalm.... :-)

I have to agree with most of what you said. The free market is the only way to get health care cost under control. But in order for that to work effectively is to get the government out of way. They have so much regulation in place that our providers are having to spend money on complying, just like our tax system.

You're such a grammatical rebel, I think you've got a little Berkeley in you!

btw - If it weren't for all the conservative chickenhawks, there could have been no "Why aren't you in Iraq?".

Which begs the question: what came first, the chickenhawk or the xenophobe?

The Plan
You can review the plan here:

http://www.hillaryclinton.com/feature/healthcareplan/americanhealthchoicesplan.pdf

I like the end where she totals up the savings in her plan and that is implied to pay for the plan.

I need to re-read it to seperate words from reality, but I did notice the catch all "reduce the cost of drugs." And lower prices will have zero effect on employment or the economy. Carter proved that price controls are wonderful.

paddy o'furniture writes: Monday, September, 17, 2007 3:42 PM
But that's where you're wrong Sooth....
If it weren't for your constant "Why aren't you in Iraq?" refrain, there could have been no reference to Canada...where all the cowards went in the sixties....
Ann Coulter already knows you guys can't take a joke.... You invented the concept of being offended. I am not one to care if someone chooses to be offended by facts.
For someone who is not an English teacher, you are awfully anal about syntax, etc., don't you think....? In a forum such as this, the mind often works faster than the fingers.
In a world where we are free to express our thoughts as we see fit, I choose to exercise my poetic license without interference from you.... I will throw in an extra dot just for you.... :-)
soothsayer writes: Monday, September, 17, 2007 3:23 PM
good one, paddy!
The old ann coulter excuse, "Geez I was joking! Can't you take a joke?"

The fact remains that you'll never hear a progressive whine that Americans with other beliefs should leave the country.

Its also a far cry from suggesting that fervent war supporters (e.g., our very own MKH) should actually go fight. Apples and oranges, my good friend.

I'm not an English teacher, btw . . . but I do know that the proper form for ellipses is three dots.
Bluecollar writes: Monday, September, 17, 2007 3:22 PM
Hillary just lost
She Just lost because there are to many questions and not enough answers. No federal administration has been able to effctively manage Medicare or even Social Security. In her proposal she stated no new agency would be created to manage it. ????? The cost is about 110 billion a year, not counting the fraud that will most certainly exist, but that can be paid by employers, who will in return get a tax credit for the insurance coverage they already offer to and pay for thier employees. ?????????? If anyone believes that will work, I have a bridge in Arizona for sale.
Healthcare will get fixed when Insurance companies tell the medical association that billing $10.00 for one Tylenol or $15.00 for a roll of medical tape that isn't even used up on 1 person is ridiculous. When the drug companies stop billing only the american consumer for R&D intead of spreading the cost globably. (Same drugs ordered out of the country are much cheaper.) The point is Free Enterprise must fix the problem or half backed, not well thought out policies from our "best and brightest" politicians will give the Federal government controll of one seventh of our economy. That is more power than any one government should have.
paddy o'furniture writes: Monday, September, 17, 2007 2:55 PM
Ah Sooth....
...as an English teacher I was sure you would understand parody. I was actually riffing off your constant "Why aren't you in Iraq" refrain.

What happened to that lefty sense of humor....?

Oh yeah....I forgot. Lefties don't HAVE a sense of humor.....

paddy, my friend
Us "liberals" are every bit as American as you folks. Indeed; thanks to the myriad failures of GWB, we are a significant majority.

However, you won't hear me suggesting you leave the country, nor will I make vague threats of violence. So much for the myth of compassionate conservatism. :)

Good morning Sooth
Predictable as usual.
Keith writes: Monday, September, 17, 2007 2:18 PM
Well that's predictable.
After all she is on record for saying:

"When I'm president, privatization is off the table because it's not the answer to anything."
(Hillary Rodham, September 3, 2007 AARP Legislative Conference.) How can anyone seriously consider her as a viable candidate, with such a socialistic attitude? Didn't we defeat communism? I guess I'll buy the T-shirt that says Re-Defeat Communism 2008!
