And, it was not on the stage. Miss USA, Rachel Smith, kept it together admirably, despite the abuse: Ms. Smith, who fell during the evening gown competition but recovered gracefully, was subjected to hatred again last night during the Top Five interviews,when hecklers in the audience launched into chants of "Mexico, Mexico"and disrupted her entire interview. The two hosts of the pageant,Vanessa Minillo and Mario Lopez, did nothing to chastise the crowd forthe rudeness shown to their fellow American. Trash. Must be that obnoxious habit we have of providing half the country's GDP that they're mad about.
Update: It seems The Donald is somewhat less protective of this Miss U.S.A. than last year's. Here he is making excuses for the Mexico City audience booing Rachel Smith. They were undoubtedly booing American policies, but if they want to voice their disapproval of American policies, they're welcome to come right across the border and march on May Day with a Mexican flag, just like the rest of our future citizens, instead of taking it out on Smith. After all, we support active involvement in politics, even for illegal aliens, so healthy is our democracy, right Kennedy? Bush? McCain?

My first thought is that the "mainstream" Latin-American press is probably providing the same type of biased anti-American reporting that the European mainstream press gives their readers. Today's reporting about America (in other parts of the World) amounts to the push part of push-polling. And surprise, they get the opinion results they want.

I remember the soccer match in Mexico with a U.S. team a few years ago where they were chanting Osama, Osama. Now they boo Miss USA at a beauty pageant. And we are supposed to believe they love us and want to be Americans.
Yeah, right.
Just like I believe there are jobs Americans won't do, there is no way we can enforce current laws, that there will be enforcement of the proposed new laws, that we have no choice but to surrender our country. |

It's a pity that Mexico thinks that America is filled with a bunch of greedy bigots. You really need to understand a little about what made this country so properous, and successful.
This nation was developed under a capitalistic system. You don't see nations under dictators, or socialist leaders thriving like America.
Socialism destroys incentive. It's a take from the wealthy and distribute it to the needy from of society.
The reason that Americans resent anyone coming to the USA illegally to obtain work is because they do not really want to become a part of American culture. They want America's wealth but not America's idles. America can not take care of every countries problem. The reason that conseratives dislike liberal policy is because it is a policy that keeps people dependent upon government. Capitalism does not thrive like that.
Right now American families are paying enormous amounts in taxes to fund education, welfare, and other entitlements. An additional flood of immigrents will only tax the system even more.
The cliche that everyone pays taxes is not a legitimate statement. Taxes are refunded if you don't make a certain amount.
So, you can see why Americans footing the cost want to put a limit on immigration.

We've dominated Mexico in soccer during the past 5 years---the Mexicans can't get over it, and they're taking it out on our American hottie.
At least the Mexican fans are better behaved when hosting beauty pageants than they are when hosting international soccer matches, where they throw balloons filled with urine at American players, and chant, "O-sa-ma," "O-sa-ma,"... |

I know most of you don't venture much further than the local walmart, but this sort of reaction is hardly limited to Mexico. So save your Mexico-bashing for another day.
Given the negative opinion of the USA worldwide (thanks to the failed policies of GWB), a representative of the USA is likely to get the same reaction in many countries. Ever wonder why Dumbya only appears before pre-screened crowds at airports in Canada, of all places?!

Sure they love us when wimps like Jimmuh Carter and Slick Willey are in office as they will do absolutely nothing when we are attacked. A nice woman named Maria from Santiago had married an American, was a chilean business woman, and now owns a couple hotels in my town.
She was telling me about the immigration and how she tells her mexican employees if they want a future in America they need to learn English, and respect this land, as they demand that respect in Mexico speaking spanish, knowing history ect.
She did believe that Americans wouldn't do many jobs, I said I grew up in this community when it was all farms, now sprawl has paved over most of the good farm land, and farmers can't make a living without governemnt kickbacks.
Improve wages and Americans would do them
Then She told me about How proud she was when she became an American Citizen, and the oath she took last year, with people from many countries.
However, the pride She, russian, brazilian chinese etc felt, was in Sharp contrast to the Mexicans.
All the mexicans were talking on their cell phones, didn't even repeat most of the oath, and most didn't even understand english enough, just were able to answer several questions with interpretors
Only the mexicans needed said interperators, the rest were fluent in English, they dressed in sunday dress, suits and such.
the mexicans were wearing t shirts jeans, tank tops, one girl was wearing daisy dukes. The non mexicans were all doctors, engineers and such.
She was really hurt by the disrespect and lack of concern they were recieving gaining this amazing gift of US citizenship

Thanks for the confirmation that the current administartion is enforcing the requirement of English proficiency for citizenship as diligently as they are enforcing employer sanctions and the rest of our immigration laws. |

seems that ham, the posters here and the usa in general have no room to speak in terms of ethnocentric rudeness. i imagine its a chicken and egg deal as to who is worse, or who is first, but as i travel the world i see bastante/enough rude nasty americans to easily create balance to this situation.
also, how stupid do you have to be to assume all mexicans have the same views. hmmmm well just about as stupid to think as most of the people here do as latin america as one cuture when each country is very very different. most of the opinions here about mexicans are simply baseless.

You can make generalities about groups of people without saying every individual conforms in every detail to the generality. When you have an arena full of people chanting "Mexico, Mexico" or "Osama Bin Laden" you can say the group was a bunch of jerks without saying every individual in that country is a jerk.
