ABC's Gibson Comes Out Swinging

Clearly, Charles Gibson wants to focus on foreign policy tonight. The questions are harder than I thought they might be, as well. He was so calm and sedate when he moderated debates earlier this year, but he's more of an attack dog tonight. For example, he asked questions like: Do we have the right to go across the border into Pakistan? Has she met with any foreign heads of state? Does she agree with the Bush doctrine of preemptive strikes??? These are fair questions, to be sure, but they are also fraught with danger -- and, no doubt -- he is attempting to make news tonight.
The one thing I am noticing most about her is that she is confident and does not waiver. Gibson is probably doing her a favor by asking these tough questions. The more he tries to maker her look bad, the more the public will love her.
Palin has been able to avoid any gaffes. When Gibson asks her about Bush, she managed to avoid criticizing Bush, while also making it clear that this would not be a 3rd term, by saying: "New leadership provides opportunity to do things better."
She did well tonight. Tomorrow, it's domestic issues. Stay tuned.

is not the "attack dog" as some would decry. I believe he is instead the Charlie Gibson I admired in his earlier days as a professional journalist. Tough questions? Absolutely! Do I think Gov. Palin held up to these tough questions? Absolutely! I would only hope that these kind of tough questions will be applied to the democratic leadership in equal kind! I include Ms Pelosi, Mr Reid and Senator Obama and Senator Biden in this hope. The professional journalist is almost an endangered species. I hope they make a comeback. I miss them. |

Matt,
Why do you call him "Charles" Gibson ? He goes by "Charlie."
In prior posts, you bizarrely did the same thing with Ted Olson...you kept referring to him as "Theodore" when the truth is, he goes by "Ted."
What are you going to do when talking about your beloved Baltimore Orioles---refer to Cal Ripken as "Calvin" Ripken ?
C'mon, M-a-t-t-h-e-w, (ha, ha, ha) get it right.

i am sure that ABC was selected for a reason as the network for Sarah Palin's initial interview, given the exceedingly rampant and increasing anti-Republican bias of CBS and NBC, but Charlie Gibson's interview style needs to be compared to that of fellow ABC interviewer Bob Woodruff, who laid down like a whipped puppy in front of John Edwards during the interview outing his extra-marital affair. there are obviously two standards for interviews of the political party members for the national networks. |

Andrew Sullivan reports (you decide):
I just read it. I'm not sure how to respond because I believe the entire last two weeks have been a farce, and ABC News is now an integral, enabling part of that farce. It's also unfair to judge a partial interview, because Gibson has so far asked no questions about her record as governor or mayor, and none of the tough questions that a press conference would ask. Maybe that is to come. So I will reserve judgment until I'm able to watch and read the entire interview. All I have learned thus far is that a McCain administration would be prepared to go to war with Russia over Georgia and will never, ever criticize or oppose any decision made by the government of the state of Israel. And I knew that already. http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/0 9/the-gibson-inte.html
Sounds like Sarah Palin just batted the series. With a grand slam too.
Oh yeah, according to Excitable Andrew, John McCain is a shameless liar too. Takes one to know one I guess. |

it and I thought she stumbled a bit on the Bush Doctrine question. Gibson appeared to try to rescue her by explaining what it was. I don't think she answered the Pakistan question directly. She knows how to spin like the best of them and this shows she can't be under estimated. I did think she appeared strong and I liked her confidence. The "not blinking" line is good. When she says she is ready it's hard not to believe her. Pretty good interview all together. |

I can't say enough great things about Sarah Palin and the unique insights and experience (yes experience!) she brings to the ticket. However, I don't think the real Sarah Palin showed up for the interview with Charlie Gibson. Where was the relaxed and confident woman we all fell in love with at the Republican Convention? Sure Charlie Gibson was tough, but she seemed to be so worried about making a gaffe that her charm got buried beneath all those nerves. I hope that her charming personality and "straight talk" resurfaces somewhere during the remainder of the interview. What she said was great! It was just the way she said it! |
|
Uhm, the woman is running for VP - I would like to think she can handle some tough questions from a reporter for God sakes.
She has shown herself to be extremely well prepared - although her answer regarding "Gods Plan" completely sidestepped the question.
She was not quoting Abe Lincoln (rolls eyes)- but I give kudos to her team for coming up with that drivel. Her phans will eat it up.
Can't wait to see her talk about no abortion for rape vitcims and praying away the gay.
I would alos be quite interested in an off the cuff interview in wich she hasn't crammed like she is taking the SAT. |
|
Charlie Gibson's questions were tough by very appropriate. These are the same questions that should be asked to Obama, McCain, Biden and probably have been.
The most interesting answer that I heard was on the god question. I think that it was a good attempt by Palin on an incindiary question. I do think though that while they clearly don't make her a zealot, you do have to be careful as vice president on the faith in god question. I do think she knows that.
Overall a good set of responses. What I like is Gibson telling her to get to the point. Do that with Obama and we can have some real discussion. |
|
Enough with the Andrew Sullivan, ok? We get it....you're a closeted sodomite in love with Andrew.
Please stop bringing him into Townhall through the back door (pun intended). |
|
Try as hard as the stuffed shirt Charlie could, to trip her up, she scored and soars! Lets watch now how the frustrated Dem.,Obama groupies etc.,twist, bury the truth, spin out of context and distort Sarahs meaning. What a soap opera! More power to John and Lady Sarah. Ex Democrat |
|
Charlie Gibson is a decent man and reporter, but he got savaged (along with George Stephanopolis) for the questions they asked of Obama in the Democratic Party Primary Debates. Plus this is the first interview since her nomination and Gibson is under a lot of scrutiny. So Gibson had to balance being fair with being tough.
Fair enough.
Of course, the left will go nuts on how Gibson is in the bag for McCain-Palin and that he is a toady* and lots of worse things. If you just don't do a list of the worst people in the world (who happen to be Republicans and Conservatives) and get a tingle up your leg every time Barack Obama speaks, you cannot be trusted.
* Andrew Sullivan called him that today. |
|
Apparently the buzz is Sarah Palin does just fine in her first Charlie Gibson interview Except for one gaffe. Charlie Gibson quotes Gov. Palin’s words, but inaccurately, and the quote just happens to be from our first gay* president, Abraham Lincoln. http://ace.mu.nu/archives/273244.php http://hotair.com/archives/2008/09/11/open-thread-palin-on- abc/
I assume tomorrow from Andrew Sullivan will be Sarah Palin is a dangerous Christianist because she quoted a notoriously gay (but in the closet and self hating) anti-states right athiest hypocrite racist radical.
Another reason why John McCain is evil and unfit to be President.

These were some tough questions but everyone was expecting that.
I think Sarah did very well and NEVER blinked.
Take that Charlie Gibson! |
