Re: Another GOP Senator Gone (and rumors Voinovich is next...)
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 12:00 PM
News today that Missouri Sen. Kit Bond (R) will retire in 2010, should make Republicans nervous.  After all, this comes on the heels of Jeb Bush's decision not to run for Mel Martinez's seat, leaving the swing states of Missouri and Florida up for grabs in 2010.

Rep. Kenny Hulshof and Rep. Roy Blunt have been mentioned as possible GOP replacements, but conservatives shouldn't overlook the possiblity of running former Senator Jim Talent.

... In other news, I am hearing rumors coming out of Ohio that Senator Voinovich is seriously considering making an announcement next week that he  won't be running for re-election.  According to my sources, Rob Portman would likely be the Republican to replace him.  This also opens up the GOP gubernatorial nomination for former Republican Congressman John Kasich.

The founders did not intend
to have Senators or Representatives for life. Nor did they intend for every citizen legislator to be a lawyer. The current Senate and House are comprised of far too many 'for life' legislators who no longer work for the people, or even for their constituents, opting instead to work for themselves or their party. Some even have the arrogance to believe they can hand their seat to someone of their own choosing or within their family as if they were a king and not a Senator. We the people are poorly served by the likes of these and should be pleased when we have Republicans who are following the spirit of the founders and return to the public square after their service.

Mr. Munck
Why don’t you produce that list for us?

Do the research and demonstrate the scholarship that you more often eschew then espouse given your propensity to parrot the work and sentences of others.

Perhaps, you might also set up a blog here at Townhall where we could all learn and be made whole by the strength of your argument, range of your knowledge and substance of your presentation.

Also, you’re welcome to refrain from attaching monikers to me here in the comfort of cyber that you would never do in my presence.

"America is a center right nation."

Sure it is, Skippy. That's why we elected the most liberal senator in the history of the universe President. That's why Al Franken (D-SNL) is house-hunting in DC. That's why there are 59 Democratic senators, 257 Democratic representatives, and 29 Democratic governors.

How about a list of the Senators that will actually be up for reelection in 2010, showing ages and number in each party? Pretty grim for the GOP, yes?

Voinovich
I would be thrilled to see Voinovich replaced by Portman!

The List
This is one of the major problems with our government and why it doesn't work!

Ageing Senate Democrats.

We are going to see a great turn over in the Democrat membership of the Senate over the next elections cycles.

Some are from States that will in all likelihood replace the sitting Senator with a new Democrat, however nothing in politics in this turbulent age is certain except a relentless demographic of age and the 'change' of ageing.

Consider the following and their potential replacements:

Robert Byrd: ninety one years old;

Tom Harkin: seventy years old;

Daniel Inouye: eighty four years old;

Tim Johnson: recovering from serious illness;

Edward Kennedy: recovering from serious illness;

Herb Kohl: seventy three years old;

Frank Lautenberg: eighty six years old;

Pat Leahy: a very old sixty eight years old;

Carl Levin: seventy four years old;

John Rockefeller: seventy two years old.

There is room for Republican growth here.

It is an unknown at this time if Mr. Obama will keep his popularity and create a dynamic, political momentum as he governs and makes choices. If he is like all human persons, his leadership will require that some disenchantment results with those that were previously favorably disposed to him and his party.

Republicans such as Mr. Portman and Mr. Kasich are articulate and likable intellects that can lead and govern. Equally so Mr. Talent.

There are many factors awaiting political denouement that will recreate the political map again.

America is a center right nation.
