The Politics of Division

Usually, a candidate doesn't himself play the race card -- he waits for surrogates or supporters to do it. Well, not Barack Obama. Yesterday, he had this to say:
They're going to try to make you afraid of me. He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black?
Shameful, no, for a candidate who was supposed to be practicing a "new kind of politics"?
Certainly appeals to racial or ethnic bigotry are shameful and wrong (and I defy Barack to identify any examples of prominent Republicans resorting to them). But is he really saying it's off-limits to point out that, in fact, he is "young and inexperienced"?
If so, it's an amazing example of hypocrisy, given that Democrats including Obama himself have been using "code words" to suggest that McCain is old (see, everybody can play the "code words" game!).
It strikes me that Democrats frequently tell voters all the dirty ways Republicans will try to "divide" us without ever providing any examples. For their own part, they regularly work to create and exploit divisions -- between genders (because pro-life=anti-woman, we're told); between races (remember the false accounts of the burning of black churches in 1996, and the James Byrd ad in 2000?); between "rich" and poor (ignoring the fact that the "rich" bear a disproportionate share of the tax burden).
Yet, somehow, pointing out that Barack Obama has no foreign policy experience and dangerously naive views on foreign policy -- a critique of his policies, mind you -- is somehow illegitimately stoking "fear," and is tantamount to mindless racism. Yeah, that makes sense.
Let's hear Barack condemn shameful and inaccurate stuff like the ridiculous MoveOn ad that suggests John McCain can't wait to conscript infants into a 100 years war. Then we can take his denunciation of all this supposed Republican fear-mongering seriously.
Sadly, Barack's insistence on gentle and civil debate seems to be as one-sided as his voting record in the Senate. As I noted a couple weeks ago, he seems as willing to "divide" Americans by race as any mainstream politician in public life today. It wasn't, after all, a Republican who brought up Barack's race yesterday. It was the candidate himself.

"He's young and inexperienced and he's got a funny name. And did I mention he's black?"
Americans are wierd.
|
|
|
He touts himself as one who moves beyond political divisions, then relentlessly attacks those on the other side for using every dirty trick in the book and being all-around evil, often before any Republican has the chance to say or do anything. If he actually is elected president, first of all may God have mercy on us, and secondly he will wonder aloud why Republicans in Congress and Republican voters are mad at him for the way he demonized them for months, and then attack all of us again for not heeding his call for a new kind of politics. |
|
|
Touche, mon ami. I agree completely. |
|
He threw out the very same kind of code word comments, which were specifically designed to create and exploit divisions among evangelicals against Romney and Mormons. To my mind, racial, ethnic and religious bigotry are all exactly the same thing.
So don't think that dems are the only ones who practice divisive politics, some republicans are no better. I guess we will be judged by our worst element, and right now that happens to be the Huckster.
That's why Huck's stupid comment about not demonizing Obama was so hollow. He's the one who is so vulgar that he actually joked about Obama being assassinated. Do we really want Huck out there representing us? I sure don't. |

So long as Obama can keep race in the forefront, he cannot loose this election. The media, and a large portion of citizens, especially the youger generation, have swallowed the "A black man as President is good" pill. Conversely, a black man as President being a bad thing is racist. A man and his politics is a loosing hand for Obama. Keep his race in the headlines, and the electorate will never have the oppertunity to debate his politics. |
|
|
He's a racist and that what racists do. No surprise here. I do not trust or like him. Now more than ever. |
|
Obama lost me at Jeremiah Wright. Now that I've studied a number of his positions and observed his stupidity, I loathe him.
His presence in that church is indefensibly racist and no one should forget it. If McCain sat in such a church for 20 years, he'd be keeping company with the caribou in ANWR.
I find Obama's poor-me approach insulting. I suggest that anyone desiring to keep Obama out of office embolden weak-kneed independents not to fall for this nonsense. You're not racist if you conclude his hard-left outlook isn't to your liking.
BTW, my suggestion for a 527 ad in light of Obama's support for the recent Gitomo detainee decision and his desire to return to the Clinton law-enforcement model for the war on terror is to superimpose a mugshot of an infamous detainee on top of a federal courtroom scene in which the cleaned up detainee is paired with a Johnnie Cochran-type lawyer who tells the judge, "If the turban don't fit, you must acquit." Al Gore would be proud. |

It makes a point how important changes can have simple beginnings and effect mighty changes.
Why can't we be part of the tipping point to get this country safe with an elected leader who has the wisdom and determination to protect us from the failed policies of appeasement.
The reasons why we need Senator McCain as our President are so obvious they become like the ignored elephant in our front rooms.
Can we thrash out our collective philosophical differences as Independents, Republicans, and Democrats enough to see the Elephant of Global Terror in our own national living room?
Disclaimer: I hope as a nation we put Mitt and Ann in the White House in 2012, but meanwhile we must, Must, MUST elect John if we want to remain safe and sane as a nation.
Even our unruly free speech and mad (sensation driven) media need to be moderated (not suppressed) so that the loud and ignorant don't bully the rest of us. I wonder if history won't call our period of history The Age of Inflexible Arguments and marvel at our excess.
John has a colorful history as a Centralist/Maverick Senator. He may be the perfect presidential candidate to bring together you, me, and everybody else with an opinion about everything.
Young people are looking up from their electronic devices and have been captivated by the Young Prince Obama. Maybe "Grandfather" McCain needs to sit down with the youth via U Tube and give them a few quick history lessons about how the world really works in terms of hostility, aggression, appeasement, and bluffing.
It would be dangerous for young Obama to learn those global history lessons on the job. 9/11 might become a footnote, eclipsed by future terrors on our own soil. Meanwhile, let's help ole John and save ourselves from Young Obama. Let Obama cut his political teeth in the Senate where he was elected to serve his state. We need Father Wisdom on the hot seat, not his junior. Flag as Offensive

apologies. my computer skills are showing! |

Your computer skills don't matter. A tip for everybody: when you click submit and your words of wisdom don't appear, do not be distressed and try again. Instead rest assured that is has posted and refreshing the screen, or getting out and coming back in you will see your work of art. If you are truly worried, write it in a word processor and cut and paste it. It's will always be there until your hard drive fills up or crashes... |

There has never been any evidence that anything "black" has any virtue. |

Kimberbutt are you actually blaming George Bush for drive-by shootings in black neighborhoods? You slay me girl. At least I can go to sleep with a smile on my face, well good night and don't forget to take your meds. |

Consensus on the clear and present bogusness of the black Obamessiah interrupted by a left-wing nut spouting the ridiculous "Bush lied" mantra, how pathetic. You are on the wrong side "honey"...
"Ideological descendants of Marx and Rousseau now lead the Democratic Party and they have turned it into a disloyal opposition to an increasingly accommodating GOP. They have molded the Party into a force working stridently and unashamedly against a Commander in Chief during wartime. They have made it a den of treachery devoted to American defeat in Iraq. They preside over an institution advised and influenced by moneyed, non-governmental groups and individuals with unquestionably anti-U.S. agendas who help make the Party a pseudo-intellectual sinkhole filled with perverse, tried-and-failed ideas repulsive to the majority of Americans. Those ideas are shaped into agendas which are then forced on the public by an activist leftwing judiciary and by a major media and arts consortium shot through with utter disrespect, indeed contempt, for traditional American values, religions and institutions. The Democratic Party has devolved into a club for the illegitimately aggrieved, the self-absorbed, the self-hating and the perpetually angry. It is a sanctuary where solipsistic malcontents and their disjointed causes find refuge and support. It has long ceased being an earnest gathering of broad minds where man's timeless problems are examined against the backdrop of the Constitution and solutions to them proposed based on the actual realities of the human condition...[Barack] Obama is in step with that radical element and with that leadership." —Rocco DiPippo

Somebody remember to remind our soldiers in Iraq that if Obama ever visits them, they need to get a helmet on him and take a picture.

I definitely want Obama spearheading all those terrorist prosecutions. Let's turn the clock back to Clinton's criminal-prosecution approach to combatting terror. |
|
I am so tired of the race card.
When they say this is a historical election, for me it is. I have never been called a racist so many times before in my life just because I don't support Obama.
And pushing this being afraid statement, please get over yourself. |

I went to bed laughing and I wake up laughing after seeing your reply.Your OCD is clouding your outlook.GWB will soon be gone and you will be left with the reality of whoever is voted in.If Obama wins it will be as you wish, however if we learned anything from the past when all the power is owned by one party it's:absolute power corrupts absolutly. If McCain wins at least there might be some gridlock to check the Congress.Bottom line politicians are devious on both sides of the aisle and you are either too young or blind to see this.Kimber if you are looking for a politician to be your savior you will be forever disappointed. |
|
Yes, their outlook is clouded by OCD combined with BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) and reinforced with the philosophy of the likes of Code Pink and MoveOn.org.
Many Americans fail to understand that the battle with the jihadis is, at its root, a war of freedom verses despotism, and that everything dear to us is on the line. When all the political in-fighting about Iraq is history, the Bush Doctrine of preemption will be hailed as the philosophical turning point in our civilization's triumph over the evil that would destroy us. They just can't credibly argue any longer against the critical importance of the establishment of a stable government in Iraq, and the righteousness of U.S. military involvement there.
Barack Obama is the most radical Leftist to ever make it this far in a presidential election race, even without consideration of the influence of his religious mentor for the last two decades, black supremacist Jeremiah Wright. The junior senator from Illinois has mesmerized a hoard of ignorant minions and is now solidifying their worship with the race card demagoguery. So indeed there could be some dark days ahead...
...while all the political posturing is going on, the world's foremost state sponsor of terrorism - Iran - is moving step by step towards acquiring a nuclear bomb. This November we don't have the luxury of staying home or writing in a candidate with no chance of being elected. With all his flaws, we MUST elect John McCain. Let us not forget that it is our very way of life at stake. Let us pray that we come together to prevail for us all rather than pander to the misled meek among us.

It's about time non-liberals start standing up to these racist pigs. You say "Certainly appeals to racial or ethnic bigotry are shameful and wrong...". Are you kidding? Do you think these Marxists and Fascists are going to limit themselves to such niceties? No way! You'll be using such politically correct terms like "apologize", "African-Americans", "global warming", "chair-person", "gay", "undocumented workers", etc, etc, etc. If you play games with opponents that want to destroy you physically and financially, using their defined terminology, you lose! A Marxist definition of a non-Marxist is a "right-wing" dupe. Do you want to engage in a debate with a liberal who thinks their own intentions are all that count, instead of the consequences of their deeds? If you disagree then you loose!
Let us not forget who our opponents are and not shirk from our responsibilities to define and engage on our terms. |
