The Telegraph:
Al Gore, the world's most high profile green campaigner, was at the centre of an embarrassing row yesterday after the serving of a rare fish at his daughter's Beverly Hills wedding...
But the fish enjoyed by the Gores were not endangered or illegally caught. Rather, the restaurant later confirmed, they had come from one of the world's few well-managed, sustainable populations of toothfish, and caught and documented in compliance with Marine Stewardship Council regulations. The Gores' spokesman, Kalee Kreider, admitted that the fish has been on the menu, but said: "The Gores absolutely agree with this humane society and the rest of the environmental community about illegally caught Chilean sea bass. "The problem is huge. This is unfortunate, we have been in touch with the society today. The really important thing is that people become more aware of this issue." Now, as long as he can get that power bill under 10 times the average American consumption, he might just be a believable spokesperson for environmental issues.

Given the limited number of fish available legally, any consumption of toothfish contributes to the demand that makes poaching profitable. The population will not recover until TOTAL consumption drops below aqua-culture PLUS natural repopulation.
Put another way, if Gore's guests hadn't eaten the 800 (or whatever) farm-grown fish, those fish would have been sold elsewhere and prevented the poaching of 800 wild fish. |
|
boy from Tennessee doing eating fish in Beverly Hills anyway....?!
This is a fish out of water ironic twist.
It didn't work for the Clampetts and it won't work for Bubba either.
Tell him to git Elly May hitched over some corn fritters and sour mash up on ole Rocky Top!
Huh Max? |

I thought that only happened on Tuesday. |

It is legal to raise fish for comsumption. It's called aqua-culture. But toothfish isn't one of them. Yet. There are nurseries, as you put it, all over the world to 'raise' fish to be released into 'the wild'. Most of this release is into fishable waters (not to mention helping the salmon population in the Northwest). Other places like Asia, they grow freah water shrimp to sell to the US. Me, I prefer black tiger shrimp grown on the Left Coast, or brown shrimp out of the Gulf of Mexico or Sea of Cortez. I digress. There are pilot plants in the Gulf and other locations that are testing the feasibility of aqua-culture on a very large scale. Eventually they will include toothfish. |

the worst kind of humor is sophomoric humor and there ain't a one of you who is even good enough to be a FRESHMAN.
Not to mention the offended leftists who not only don't get nothin', they don't even SUSPECT nothin'.

I was thinking along the same lines...
Someone please explain to me how if...a species is listed as "endangered" consuming ONE isn't helping make the species more endangered. And there were what 800 guests would you figure = 800 less fish?
And what of the "world's few well-managed, sustainable populations"? Is it legal to raise the fish FOR CONSUMPTION?? I don't believe I have ever heard of another program that allowed that!
Isn't it more like...the stocks being raised in the nurseries are meant to be released into the wild to "repopulate" the species?
I'm confused. But the Libs better figure it out soon 'cuz they'll be on the 'endangered species list' soon enough the way things are going. Especially if they help elect a dictator.

Now he's got more 'splaining to do. Isn't that like cannibalism? |
|
...were they UNION toothfish....?
Al's got some 'splaining to do.....!! |
|
You rubes kill me;
"one of the world's few well-managed, sustainable populations of toothfish" which are easily distinguishable by the stars on their bellies!
Hahahahahaha
and you fall for it.
You're killing me here. |

c/o Shady Acres Mental Hospital for the Terminally Crotchety... |

One of my many sayings 'You send them to school, buy them books, and they eat the covers.'
And I misspoke previously. I meant rejoinder. Still working proof reading on the fly.
Kimber, I buy the George Strait CD for you. Just give your address and I'll send it to you. |
|
Kimber ever got that George Strait CD, eh Keith?
A pity that you pay for a college education these days, the kid comes out knowing a lot of words but NOT knowing how to think.....
....and Esthier: if ever there was a guy who had some hammering coming to him, it's Al.... |
|
Okay, so he didn't say he '...invented the internet'. He said '...creating the internet'. Case of splitting hairs.
Oh and Kimber work on witty enjoinders. I am clever. You just need to bet out more. Rember laughing when you were younger. Lighten up already. |
|
"For example, you still have the right wing hammering Gore on "inventing the Internet even when he said no such thing: http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.asp."
The difference between the two is really just so minor. His actual words are "I took the initiative in CREATING the Internet." Wow, the GOP smear machine got one word wrong.
And yeah, he didn't literally mean that he "created" the Internet, but that's what he said.
Meanwhile, there's still the story of Bush reading "My Pet Goat" upside down on 9/11 despite photographic proof to the contrary.
And to Kimberlyric, it's not a baseless accusation. He actually served the fish. What others have said is EXACTLY true. |
|
A little credit due here from a left-of-centrist.....
While most conservative blogs haven't posted the retraction, I credit you for doing so... even with the snide comment at the end.
Unlike the government's view lately, truth is a good thing.
The GOP has been extremely good at spreading false stories. For example, you still have the right wing hammering Gore on "inventing the Internet even when he said no such thing: http://www.snopes.com/quotes/internet.asp.
I suspect years from now, we'll still be hearing about Al Gore eating the endangered fish, even though he didn't. |
