Liberty, Justice and a Bailout for All
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 2:32 PM
"If the government can bail out investment banks on Wall Street, then we can extend a hand to folks who are struggling on Main Street." -from Barack Obama's speech to be delivered in Las Vegas today.

In other words, bail everybody out!! Federal money for all! To spur the opening of the federal spigots, Obama's pushing for a $10 billion "Foreclosure Prevention Fund."

Note for the commenters: I am being sarcastic about bailing everybody out. I think the Bear Stearns bailout is what we call "moral hazard."

Obviously, you have an obligation to vote your conscience but we are going to get a liberal president in November no matter what we do. The only thing we can do is vote against it. Ross Perot garnered 19.6% of the vote in 1992 and was actually the overall leader in the polls when he temporarily dropped out. Had Perot not run, Bush probably would have won with 55% of the vote or better. We never would have had a 1994 Contract with America and the runaway government spending would have returned then instead of under Bush 43. Mandates matter. By voting for McCain, you are unwittingly voting to support the status quo and throwing away the opportunity to register a protest. Believe me, the Dems were just as scared of the Perot results and the GOP was.

Phil, I see what you are saying
but i do not know if voting third party is the answer. As far as Amanda's note about being "sarcastic", if that is true, then your blog post says absolutely nothing.

It's bigger than that. Bush has twice tried to "kick start" the economy by "refunding" taxes to taxpayers. Where do you draw the line? The Dems (Congress actually) decided that the last Bush handout was too small so they sought the political credit by offering a bill to double the handout. The biggest reason we can't discuss this intelligently is that our "leaders" are liars and crooks. We are left with little choice than to rail against the system in its entirety since the pols have teamed up with corporations and media to govern around the voters who pay the bills. Perot almost (and would have had he not dropped out) won the presidency in 1992 with his very enlightening charts that have proven correct in retrospect. Reagan was also very good at explaining things to us. Why do our current leaders call us bigots and extremists and purists and so on when we don't automatically support them? You are complaining about a natural reaction to corruption of power. Vote against the one-party system by voting third party!

No, not in other words
bail out everybody. This is typical distortion, and is exactly what has destroyed all ability to discuss any topic. Deviate one iota from the doctrine, be it right wing or left wing, and beware. So -- if you are pro-life but favor stem-cell research, traitor! If you are pro-choice but favor parental notifcation or a ban on partial birth abortion, traitor again! The strenght of our countrey rests on the free enterpirse system and also requires some saftey net to ensure stability. The government may have to intervene sometimes -- the important question is when, how much, to what extent. I don't see why it is unfair to ask, well, if the government bails out Bear Stearns, why can't it help ordinary homeowners. Maybe the answer is that the government should not have bailed out Bear Stearns -- but the question is not unfair, and it doe snot mean bail out everybody.

That's the problem with the Bush handout
