The Brownback/Romney Rivalry
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 4:55 PM

You wouldn't know this by reading most blogs, but the most contentious political battle being fought right now isn't between Rudy and McCain, or McCain and Romney, but between Romney and Brownback ...

(The competitiveness between the two camps was visible to anyone who was at CPAC -- and it was confirmed to me by a senior Romney operative several weeks ago.)

While Romney's fundraising numbers demonstrate that he's in a different league than Brownback, rivalries  aren't always based on two sides being equal.  Look at the Cowboys/Redskins' rivalry, for example.  Quite often one of the teams is on top and the other team is struggling.  That doesn't stop them from clashing (and, I might add, usually the underdog wins).

So why do these two camps dislike each other?  It's a simple turf battle; Brownback's campaign believes Romney is a poseur on conservative issues -- and worse -- is getting Catholic support that should rightly belong to Brownback.  But money talks and while Mitt Romney is an excellent fundraiser, Sam Brownback is a pathetic one.

But if Brownback is hoping to prove he is more committed to the conservative cause than Mitt Romney, he can always point to this story, coming out of South Carolina:

... Romney declined to weigh in on a South Carolina proposal that would require women seeking an abortion to view an ultrasound. Instead, he said states should make their own abortion laws.

”I think the Roe v. Wade one-size-fits-all approach is wrong,” Romney said.

South Carolina is an early voting state dominated by conservatives who oppose abortion rights.

Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback, also campaigning in the state, reaffirmed his support Thursday for legislation passed by the South Carolina House that would mandate the requirement.

Romney is arguing that it is a state's rights issue, while, you can be sure the Brownback folks don't see it that way.

It's got to be frustrating to believe that you are the most conservative candidate in the race, but not have enough money to get your message out.  Sam Brownback would do well to follow the advice of conservative icon Morton Blackwell, who has taught a generation of conservatives this principle: "Being right, in the sense of being philosophically correct, is not enough to win."

Disagree
I disagree with Romney's states right position on abortion but that is the best "political" position especially for the general election. Romney does have a chance at the nomination. I do not have data on how many Catholics are supporting Romney but he had to get a lot of them to win in MA so he knows how to reach them.

It's not enough to just be conservative!
Sen. Brownback is obviously conservative. So what? A lot of us are. It would be nice, however, if besides being conservative, you had taken over an organization which was in a terrible mess, (such as the SLC Olympics) and made it an outstanding success. It would be nice if you had done the same thing to numerous businesses. It would be great if you had reduced the deficit, and balanced the budget in a liberal state.
Come to think of it, Romney has, and Brownback hasn't. I've not trying to be negative regarding Sen. Brownback. I believe he is a good man, right on most of his positions, and well worth keeping in the Senate. But that is the best place for him. The best place for Romney is where he can turn the country around -- as President.

I'm All For States Rights!
I don't really have a dog in this fight, having issues with both, but I do believe that the abortion issue should have been handeled at the State level just like age of sexual consent. I'm pro life, but I would love to see many federalized decisions moved back to the State House, allowing Americans to live in a like minded State....Brownback's support of S-2611, and especially SA-3985 Allowing illegal alliens to access social security benefits with the stolen identification of TRUE AMERICAN CITIZENS eliminated him for me last year. And McCain was right there with him.

Abortion and Communicator
I wish to mention some things here...

When we are talking about morals (including the abortion), let us recall the words of our wise Master, "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid" (Matt 5:14). Unfortunately, we could not forbid people from doing things that are wrong. We could punish them for doing the wrong things. However, we have let the people thinking of the abortion as the appropriate choice far too long. We need to teach the people how and why abortion is wrong. That is where we need the great Communicator. We could go much further if our President is this great communicator. So, this is something we should look for in our candidates; who can speak clearly and loud among all of the noises that are MSM.

Bull and Bullfrog
Matt,

Your rivalry here sounds like the parable of the Bullfrog and the Bull. How the Bullfrog blew himself up trying to be as big as the bull; and the Bull never noticed it happening.

Brownback's people remind me of some of the Marines I used to meet at the pistol range. They would ask me what the minimum score was for qualification and I would always give them the same answer, "I don't know; I don't score that low.

Brownback should find something useful to do with his time.
