Don't Stop Believin' in Journey
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 10:45 AM

Just how much of a bump did the Sopranos finale give Journey?

According to Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony BMG Music Entertainment, downloads of the song from iTunes went from about 1,000 on the day before the episode to 6,531 the day after. For the week, the song climbed to No. 17 in popularity on iTunes, while the band’s “Greatest Hits” also cracked the Top 20.

On the radio, airplay of “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” increased 192 percent Monday through Thursday over the first four days of the previous week, according to Nielsen BDS, which tracks airplay.

It was not the first time the band had television to thank for a royalties windfall. In 2005,after “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” was featured on the season premiere of MTV’s “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County,” it ranked in the top 10on iTunes.

The song also enjoyed a 150 percent increase in downloads the week after it was featured in an episode of “Family Guy”on Fox in 2005, according to Nielsen.

Gotta love the capitalism.

I would like to take this moment proclaim myself officially ahead of the curve on the Journey Renaissance, as I went to see them in concert a couple weeks ago. Yes, Mary Katharine Ham-- more cutting-edge than David Chase. Believe it. (Kidding, of course. Who doesn't love Journey? Anyone? Anyone?)

That's former Journey front-man Jeff Scott Soto behind me and left. He has now left the band, sparking rumors that the remaining four members will get back together with Steve Perry to capitalize on the Sopranos boost. And, if that happens, I'll so be there again.

Oh, and if you haven't seen this, it's the most compelling read I've seen so far on the Sopranos finale.

I don't like Journey.
I always considered them a Vegas act. Tony Soprano took a hit in my estimation when he selected that song-- real men don't listen to Journey.

Don't Stop!
I LOVE people who are completely clueless about their awful taste in music. I mean, to admit you went to see Journey, especially if you're under 40 years old . . . :o)

ah, Journey
Ya gotta love Journey! I loved Journey in high school/college....had some Journey eight tracks and albums which I did eventually replace with CDs.

My kids (9-23) also enjoy Journey (truth be known, I think they find them a bit cheesy), but we enjoy putting on Journey tunes and belting out our favorite songs! Don't Stop Believin' has always been our personal favorite.

I hate getting old
Journey has annoyed me since high school, and that was back in the late bronze age. Who puts a bug on their album cover, anyway?
The main reason they annoyed me was that they weren't Pink Floyd.
Also the chicks who liked Journey back then would look at guys like me like we crawled out of a petri dish, they being on the pep squad and all.
I went to a Gordon Lightfoot concert recently. There were more bald spots in the audience than on a reservation dog.
I kept my hat on.

Aged rockers mean aged rocker fans
huh, I hate to admit journey was making their hits when I was in school. (sigh) that makes me feel my age.

It's a shame the younger generation has to go "oldies" to get good rock n roll, can't blame them for rejecting a lot of the new crap though, of course we had our share of crappy music, anybody remember disco? the bee gee's?... yeah, what crap that was, eh?

I like the hat too, looks good on ya, but then, anything would.

but did ya go see the Silversun Pickups?

What you're saying is that Jeff Scott Soto and Journey went their "Separate Ways" ?

So, did you go see the Silversun Pickups when they were in D.C. recently ?!
They're pretty awesome.

By the way, that's a cool hat.
You should think about bringing it with you to the Blog Expo in Vegas later this year, in case you do any desert sight-seeing.

Small Bump
Compared to the bump that Blitzkrieg Bop got after the movie "Accepted", this is miniscule

You saw Journey?
Was that a Rock Concert or a Fossil Show?

Yep
My high-school-teacher friend had been telling me for a year now how Journey had been making a big comeback with teens. With the Sopranos boost, they'd be crazy not to tour around with Steve Perry and rake in dumptrucks full of cash.
