NBC Hammers Huck's Pardons and Clemencies
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 8:08 PM
Here's the video from tonight's NBC News broadcast that Larry Sabato brought up on my show tonight.  Here's the transcript:

NBC's BRIAN WILLIAMS: "The Republican front runner in Iowa, the former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee has been facing increasing scrutiny to go with his increased standing in the polls of late. Tonight our senior investigative correspondent Lisa Myers looks at one area critics have been looking at closely, granting clemency to some prisoners in his home state."

NBC'S LISA MYERS: "Members of Rev. Billy Bennett's family say they begged Governor Huckabee not to grant clemency to this man, James Maxwell who confessed to murdering Bennett in 1979."

EDNA BENNETT WARNER: "It's not fair. Why should he go free?"

MYERS: "The prosecutor also strongly opposed reducing Maxwell's sentence. But Rev. Bennett's wife, Edna, says Huckabee told her that Maxwell, who had worked at the Governors mansion, was a changed man, and had become a Christian."

BENNETT WARNER: "Just because James Maxwell had became a Christian didn't entitle him to go out and walk the streets."

MYERS: "Huckabee commuted Maxwell's sentence in 2000, noting he'd shown remorse. The parole board later freed him."

HUCKABEE: "In that particular case, he has been a model person outside of the system."

MYERS: "In all Huckabee granted 1,023 commutations and pardons in 10 years as governor, twice as many as his three predecessors combined. Prosecutor, Larry Jegly, a Democrat, complains many were violent criminals."

PROSECUTOR LARRY JEGLY: "He used the power of clemency at an astounding rate."

MYERS: "Prosecutors say many of those freed claimed to have found religion while in prison and were backed by ministers. At the time Huckabee acknowledged that his believe in redemption factored into his decisions. Huckabee allegedly pushed for release of this convicted rapist, Wayne Dumond, who was later convicted of rape and murder. Huckabee says he is not responsible for Dumond's parole. But three members of the parole board say he personally lobbied them. Huckabee says he is tough on crime, turned down most clemency requests and considered many factors in granting clemency."

HUCKABEE: "The inmate's institutional record, a sense of true remorse, and most of all, that there had been many many years pasted from the time in which maybe a crime was committed."

MYERS: "Maxwell has not committed another crime. But Bennett's family still says Huckabee was wrong, to let a murderer go free. Lisa Myers, NBC News, Washington."

I'll sleep better with criminals on the street.

I'll have visions of sugar plums as illegals get the education they deserve before my kids do.

Huckapardons

I wonder if Governor Huckabee would have freed a convicted murderer because he had converted to Islam. Or to a benevolent secular humanism. Or, even worse, to Mormonism.

Christian compassion: How far does it extend?

Thank you for putting rapists and murder
Thank you for putting these 'redeemed' men back on the street. We don't have enough murderers and rapists roaming freely, especially with the difficulty of actually finding and convicting these guys, and then finally getting them to prison, but the Huckster knows better than a jury of the defendants' peers...and the law.

This is scary--he thinks that he can, single-handedly, look into a man and determine if he will not rape or murder again? I am not talking about checking the wrong box on your tax forms and getting a delayed sentence, but these thugs are murderers and rapists and he let them go free!

over 1000? Unbelievable! Did all 1000 receive bad legal counsel? Was the law wrong in each case? How could he even have the time to review that many documents, appeals, court testimonies and briefs (not to mention evidence and asking the victims--wait, they are dead, I mean, asking the deceased victims' families about the murderer who now roams free)...

Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's, and in this case, the laws of Arkansas are Caesar's--but the Huckster thinks that he can single-handedly ignore them and the verdicts rendered by 12,000 Arkansas citizens (12 in a jury X 1000 trials...if all jury trials)
HOW CAN ANYONE TAKE THIS PERSON SERIOUSLY?

The Demoncrats must be falling over themselves hoping that we put him up as our candidate!

Laura Inghram had Governor Romney on her show this morning. With respect to pardons, Romney would not go on record supporting a pardon for those 2 border agents that are serving lengthy sentences. In fact, Romney boasted how he rejected every pardon ever presented to him.

Be careful what you wish for....

I am all for prison reform
but that should start with the least violent prisoners, not the most violent.

I suspect a lot of this was motivated by budgetary crisis in Arkansas (I do not know that, I am guessing), but again, if that is your motivation start at the bottom with the least violent or dangerous offenders.

I watched parts of this live. It did not look good for Huck. Better yet was NPTV (not that anyone was watching). They ran an extensive story about both Romney and Huck with live campaign footage. Huck looked like a nervous 10 watt bulb compared to the Romney Spotlight. Romney look comfortable and very Presidential.

Huck does much better in the cattle call debate format than he does on the Nightly News.

Ron Paul
I expect Ron Paul to run well in MI. He has the money and the troops to make a difference there. He may run ahead of Rudy and Huck in NH. That could be interesting.

Huck foreign policy looks like it is designed to grab votes from Ron Paul. It will be interesting to see how Ron Paul handles McCain (the Wars greatest advocate) and Huck (sounds like a Dem).

Romney on Pardons
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNVKDioCHRw

No Huckapardons for Mitt.

No pardons, not one, Mitt Romney even refused to pardon a young guy who had a junvenile conviction and applied for a pardon. . . from Iraq. . . because Mitt has a policy of no pardons. Romney said no pardon because it involved a fire arm. . . a BB gun. The guy needed the pardon so he could apply to be a cop. Oh by the way, the kid also won a bronze star in Iraq.

Yet, Romney said a pardon for Libby was ok. Okay, I am for at a minimum clemancy for Libby but denying that war hero a pardon frosts me. Mitt should have showed better common sense on that one.

I am not for pardons on a general basis, but the power in the executive is there for a reason (juries do make mistakes), so a blanket denial of pardons is not good either.

Anyone Got a Hankie?
Weeping Mitt shows up again. This is a true 'cry' of desperation.

LONDONDERRY, N.H. - Mitt Romney's eyes filled with tears Monday as the Republican presidential contender recalled watching the casket of a soldier killed in Iraq return to the United States and imagined if it were one of his five sons. It was a counterbalance to a moment earlier this year, when Romney told a woman in Iowa that his grown sons — none of whom has served in the military — were serving the country by helping with his campaign. Romney later apologized for the remark, saying it was wrong to equate military service with campaign involvement.

radioman_abq writes: To be fair, Did Romney pardon anybody"

You might well ask.

As Governor, Romney Denied All Requests For Pardon And Commutation.

"During the four years Romney was in office, 100 requests for commutations and 172 requests for pardons were filed in the state. All were denied. 'Governor Romney's view is that it would take a compelling set of circumstances to set aside the punishment and guilt resulting from a criminal trial,' said Romney aide Eric Fehrnstrom, who added he was not familiar with Circosta's case. 'The power to pardon should only be used in extraordinary circumstances.'"

Because this video clip one actually pissed me off, against Mitt Romney. I am not being unfair here, obviously I do not like Huckabee letting killers out on the street (that is worse). Huckabee should beg forgiveness for the crimes committed by those freed prisoners. Huckabee is not qualified to be President. Period.

But it also bothers me that a bronze star winner in Iraq is not treated with more compassion by Governor Romney. It is stuff like this that makes me want to vote for McCain, Giuliani, and Thompson. This guy shot another kid with a BB gun when he was thirteen (it did not break the skin). For goodness sake, give the guy a break when he has stayed out of trouble and is applying to be a cop after serving in Iraq (and being decorated with a Bronze Star).

Here's a hint Mitt, that is a big deal.

Hugh, Just Stop It
With every over-the-top Huckabee bashing post, you drive more people towards him, and cause those who already support him to dig their heals in deeper. How you don't realize this mystifies me.

Your continuous shilling for Romney makes you one his campaign's worst enemies. If you and other conservative elitists would leave Huckabee to his own devices, his campaign would likely die.

You've also been very dishonest about the entire process. Over the years, I've come to expect more from you. Pretty much anything that happens, you spin to Romney's favor. It's nauseating to those of us who don't support him.

Further, the way you've insulted pretty much anyone who supports Thompson/McCain/Huckabee makes it next to impossible for you to come back and support Romney/Guiliani next fall. There are some fences that can't be mended. I suggest you and the rest of the conservative media strongly reconsider your tactics.

Radical Islam
There is no easy solution to radical Islam. It will take someone like Romney who will gather a lot of information, evaluate all of the options. Develop the best plan, with contingency points in case the plan has to be modified, and who will implement it competently. It will take a combination of plan A B and C.

It is the Romney decision making process that I like most. He has the ability to solve problems that others can't solve because of their preconceived notions or unwillingness to explore all of the options and find a way to make a solution work.

It will probably take 3 or more approaches applied at different times to deal with radical Islam. Romney is the candidate who is most likely to find a way that will work.

I think that you work on different segments of Islam with different approaches. You approach Iran differently than you approach Iraq, Pakistan, or Saudi Arabia. You approach Hezbollah differently than you approach Bin Laden.

You also have to have an approach for Russia and China as they are the enablers of much of the terror in the Middle East.

Mitt Romney never performed an abortion. If you dislike him because he was pro choice in the past, fair enough. So were a lot of people, including Ronald Reagan. I don't like Mitt's opportunistic flip flops, but I do not hold him in anyway responsible for other people's abortions.

And it is a complete abuse of power to cover up for your own child in a criminal investigation. If this allegation about Huckabee is true and he helped his son out due to the fact he was governor, he is not qualified for any elected office. The only thing you can do in a case like this is hire your child the best lawyer available and stay out of it. So in answer to your question, Huckabee's behavior is worse.

Huckafree + Gitmo??? *shudder*
This guy would probably throw open wide the gates of Gitmo, load all the thugs onto a cruise ship, and send them off to Miami. Just as long as they acknowledged him as Supreme Christian Leader first, of course.

I'm trying to figure out in what way, shape, or form is this guy a conservative. Has Huckabee simply punked the Republican party?
TNboy writes: Monday, December, 17, 2007 11:32 PM
You petty fools.
You will look to anything to try to stop the competition of your cannidate.

Trying to tell people not to vote for a man because his son supposedly killed a dog? When Mr.Plastic supported the killing of babies.

As far as letting criminals go, for Mr.Plastic he probably never let any criminals go because there probably aren't any criminals in jail because there probably isn't any law enforcement in his state.

If you don't like him, then fine, vote for someone who may be more conservative, but to critize him with someone who is less conservative like Mr.Plastic is a joke.

If anything you should be saying that Huckabee is too conservative, and that people should vote for the more progressive Mr.Plastic who you could try to say is more close to the center. Atleast then that would make sense.

You guys have really made the Ron Paul supporters look normal. Great job guys. Is that really what you want to do?

What a bunch of pansies you have all become.
Challenging one's record while Governor is not bashing or dirty pool. It's contrast!

When the Huckster was asked today to justify his
1200+ COMMUTATIONS WHILE IN OFFICE, THAT IS ONE EVERY FOUR DAYS, INCLUDING 12 MURDERERS, his response was:

"Well, Romney has spent millions, and he's desperate, and he's behind, and bla bla bla"....

Hey Huckey, we're still waiting for your answer!

What is this an 8th grade election for Class President?

Ronald Reagan never had a problem battling his opponents in the primaries.

Going after one with personal attacks, one's appearance, comb overs, religion, big nose, family, etc.. everybody agrees that's out of bounds.

But, challenging ones record while in office is also out of bounds?
Really? Since when? Not!
It's the American way. Always has been.
As Romney put it,"Politics is a blood sport".

We don't need a bunch of pansy "Medved's", who can't stand a challenge to "their" guys record, shaping public opinion.

Rumor has it that Michael Medved has given up his Viagra for a Mike Hucabee poster. Talk about losing any sense of objectivity.

Perhaps the smartest guy on radio sounds like a clown in his constant defense of the Huck.

A simple ad pointing out Huck's record in contrast to Romney's is evil and rotten and dirty according to Medved.

Wondered where Alan Alda went to, tune in the Michael Medved show. He glosses over any challenge to Hucabee's record and dismisses Romney's and others points of contention.

Grow up and get in the game. Defend your records
with dignity and class, as Romney, Guiliani and Mcain are doing, accept your opponents questions regarding your record, and be a man. You're starting to whine like the Clinton's.

It isn't that Huckabee's son killed a dog as much as it is HOW he killed it. After slitting its throat he put a rope around its neck and hung him from a tree....and that wasn't all of it....I don't want to gross you out. We are talking about a very sick young man here. Whether any of this has anything to do with Huckabee's parenting skills is unknown. Each person has free agency from God. The contrast between Huck's son and Mitt's 5 sons, however, is night and day. All 5 of Mitt's sons are returned missionaries and all 5 are happily married and successful. So far they have given Mitt 11 grandchildren.

Desperation, or just despicable?
Rather than conduct a campaign with a positive agenda outlining Romney's plans for America, Mitt and his surrogates resort to politics of personal destruction.

Hillary's attack apparatus has *nothing* on you Romniacs.

Huck's kid???? from 1998? Are you KIDDING ME?

Team Mitt and the chattering mass of blind mittbots are taking Clintonesque negativity to new heights.

Every day a constant drip of negative, distorted and biased spin is put forth as some "great new revelation", (sort of like black people being ok after all... in 1978).

I have reached the point of complete disgust with Romney and his awful minions that spout distorted, desperate and despicable propaganda and with Hugh for allowing this site to become home base for the stepford romniacs.

Despicable and desperate.

Huck's son likes his gun
Not that you NRA freaks will mention it, but this is the same son who tried to bring a Glock onto a plane:

David Huckabee, a son of Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, was arrested at an Arkansas airport Thursday after a federal X-ray technician detected a loaded Glock pistol in his carry-on luggage.
"I removed the bag and asked Mr. Huckabee if he knew what he had in the bag," Little Rock police officer Arthur Nugent wrote in a report after being summoned to a security checkpoint. "He replied he did now."

What kind of thinking person forgets he's bringing a loaded gun on a plane? Probably the same kind that would torture and kill a dog...

I agree with another poster
that it is fun to watch Hugh squirm because of Huck. Don't write off Rudy either. He won't take this lying down.

Mitt is an unsavory fellow: belongs to Ivy League Grad gang and member of the evil wing (the Bush/Rockefeller wing) of the republican party.

BEWARE of Mitt.

He is out of step with immigration. He wanted to let the illegals stay in America while they applied legally.

Romney is basically just like Bush on immigration. Fools would vote for him.

"I have reached the point of complete disgust with Romney and his awful minions that spout distorted, desperate and despicable propaganda and with Hugh for allowing this site to become home base for the stepford romniacs."

So suddenly the *media* is finally scrutinizing Huckabee's record and history because he's *in the lead,* and all the shaky details they are raking up, painting a clear picture of Huckabee's incompetence for the office of President, are somehow Romney's fault?

Um....riiight.

For all the piling on you've been doing to Romney the past few weeks, I find your indignation disingenuous. Like a bully who's finally, deservedly been punched in the nose and can't quite handle it.

And "awful minions" is a pretty good description for the anti-Romney troll horde that skulks around this blog.

You may note that whenever a valid criticism of Huckabee's *policies* is raised on this forum, the commenters respond with attacks on Romney's religion (like your "new revelation" crack, as well as your recent ridiculous accusations that Mormons are racists).

"Despicable and desperate" indeed.

Why didn't Arkansans rise up?
This pattern of repeated pardons of Christian converts is outrageous. At best it is unconstitutional under the equal protection clause to dole out government mercy only to Christian convicts. At worst it is misuse of the seat of government when Huckabee should have been governing and instead was pastoring.

Why was there no outcry in all those years that this went on? It baffles me that it was tolerated when the victims were never silent with their objections. The public should have ousted such a man.

I have driven through Arkansas and it seemed like a nice enough place (from the car) but when you hear stories about the Clinton, Huckabee, McDoogals, etc. it just boggles the mind.

And I thought New Jersey and Louisianna were bad.

I do not necessarily blame Huckabee for his son, there are bad seeds out there with perfectly good parents. It does happen. Barring some revelation, I am not blaming Mike Huckabee for that.

But if he intervened on his son's behalf (because he was governor) in a criminal investigation it is an abuse of power. Plain and simple. It is wrong and it should disqualify you from any office.

And you are right about Mitt's family. His sons all appear to be great adults, husbands and fathers. While it is not always fair to blame bad kids on their parents, it is almost always right to give credit to parents for good kids. Ann and Mitt deserve credit for that.

Commuting sentences
One thing that is interesting to note is that Jesus Christ, told the thief that hung on the cross next to him that he would see him in paradise, however Jesus did not commute that theif's death sentence or save his mortal life in any way. Forgiveness and repentance do not mean that consequenses no longer exist, nor that punishments will all be removed.

There is a quote that goes something like "Mercy to the guilty is treason to the innocent." While this may be a bit extreme, there is an important point made by that statement, that anyone in the possition to grant a pardon, or commutation should first consider.
Joe writes: Tuesday, December, 18, 2007 8:35 AM
Pardons and commutations are fine
to a point. There is a reason the king had that power, the power of mercy as a last resort. Our founding fathers incorporated that power in the President. The states also reserved that power in governors.

Sometimes juries and judges make mistakes and new evidence comes to light that warrants the executive to act as a matter of mercy or to prevent a miscarriage of justice. Or a convicted person shows they are worthy of mercy and it should be granted (like that Bronze Star veteran who wanted his record cleared so he could serve as a police officer in Massachusetts). I agree the conditions for the governor intervening should be rare, but they should exist.

Huckabee seemed to hand them out like chips at a party. Mitt Romney never gave them out, which appeared to be politically calculated to avoid any "Willie Hortons" in Massachusetts, but then called for one for Scooter Libby (over that Bronze Star veteran). Okay, I get it would be wrong to send Scooter to jail, but how about the Bronze Star veteran getting a break?

"Maxwell hasn't committed another crime"
Kind of a deflating statement, isn’t it? Dumond makes a much better anti-Huck poster boy. If only Maxwell had slaughtered some Cub Scouts afterwards, I thought wistfully…

Funny how everyone was all over Huck for being “unduly” influenced by Christian concerns when he released people who had clergy lobby for their release. But now he releases a guy who killed a preacher – shouldn’t that allay any strange fears that Huck has been too conscious of Christian concerns?

BTW, look at the reach of the headline – now even NBC is against Huck. With enemies like this on the left, Huck doesn’t need too many more friends on the right.

Hugh never met an MSM smear job he didn’t like – if it was directed at Huck or Rudy. He becomes the most credulous of believers in the professionalism and fairness of the NY Daily News, the Arkansas Democrat, NBC, 60 Minutes, CNN – probably Olberman and Krugman, too. And hey, what do Rosie and Whoopi think about Huck? I bet Hugh could get some great ammo from them.

First people need to lay off of Huckabee's family that is over the line in my book. Huckabee has done enough hiimself to destroy his chances at the PResidency. NBC did not point out that Huckabee took money from people who wanted a pardon or clemency and now he will not release who the donors were to his Action America slush fund which paid him tens of thousands of dollars for giving speeches. DNC Joe, your daily kos talking points.
Kos Kid Joe,

That is the cutest Daily Kos/AFL-CIO story. I thought that Mitt was unprincipled?!

Mitt reviewed the case. The governors before Mitt reviewed the case. In 16 years, the "BB kid", received no pardon from any governor.

What are the facts for review the case?

1) He was charged with FELONY assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

2) His record full record and the circumstances are unknown.

3) We know that he filed for petitions while in Iraq---before he his service record was complete.

3) To ALL seeking to regain their license to carry, the guidelines discouraged pardons for FELONY firearm offense.

4) Eric Fehrnstrom, "Governor Romney's view is that it would take a compelling set of circumstances to set aside the punishment and guilt resulting from a criminal trial... the power to pardon should only be used in extraordinary circumstances."

The story sounds incomplete. Made for Daily Kos/DNC consumption. You have the charge of FELONY assault and you have a petition while in Iraq--before his service record was complete. And Mitt should drop his guidelines?

It sounds like a heart wrenching story. Why don't you get us the facts of the case? That way at least Huck-->Big Jimmy, Little Clinton's opposition research can give him more than the Daily Kos story.

Scratch that Huck should keep his convoluted version. He can get a star from the Kos Kids and he can show that Mitt is tough and principled.
