Obama's Gaffes Reveal More Than Mistakes ...

A new narrative seems to be developing about Barack Obama; that he is smart but also a "gaffe machine." The WSJ's John Fund writes:
"As smart and credentialed as he is, Sen. Obama is often an indifferent speaker without a teleprompter. He has large gaps in his knowledge base, and is just as likely to dig in and embrace a policy misstatement as abandon it. ABC reporter Jake Tapper calls him 'a one-man gaffe machine'."
Let's be honest, when you talk as much as presidential candidates must, some gaffes are unavoidable. Others occur when a candidate is tired. But Obama's gaffes seem to be the result of a candidate who is in over his head -- who has gotten by on style points -- not the substance.
To me, this is the real story -- that Obama's gaffes actually reveal something more dangerous than a candidate who merely "misspeaks." That his gaffes are the product of someone who is not quite ready for prime time...
Of course, going from the Illinois state senate to being a presidential frontrunner is a lot of ground to cover in just a few years ...
Another interesting thing to consider is whether or not this lack of historical understanding is uniquely due to Obama's inexperience -- or if his lack of knowledge is actually a cultural phenomenon.
While Obama is a child of the 80s, he seems to have a lot in common with today's generation. In his new book, The Dumbest Generation, author Mark Bauerlein says this phenomenon is true of most "Millenials." In short, Bauerlein argues today's young people are great at using the internet to retrieve information, but that they lack knowledge of history. Might Obama's emphasis of style over substance be a result of the era in which he was raised? Is it unique to him? Or is it merely a product of a young man who is still finding himself? These are all interesting to ponder.
Consider the Reagan vs. Obama contrast. When Ronald Reagan was elected president in 1980, he had lives through The Great Depression, WWII, Vietnam, The Civil Rights Movement, etc. He had also achieved success in other areas of life. For this reason, he did not need the presidency to give his life purpose. Of course, being compared to Reagan is never a good thing for the person being compared.
Still, it's fair to say that Obama has been playing "over his head" for quite some time. He's like a young football team who starts off winning a lot of games. Deep down, you always suspect it won't last.
It's also interesting to note that Obama has really won few contests in the last several months. To over-extend the football metaphor, he's like a football team who "backs into the playoffs". One wonders if McCain will be facing the Obama of February -- or the Obama who got his clock cleaned in West Virginia.
There is no doubt he has run a surprisingly smart primary campaign. But because he and Hillary agreed on most major policy issues -- he was not forced to defend his political philosophy. That is about to change. McCain will challenge him, and most likely, this will create "forced errors."
At least, Obama appears to be demonstrating that he is, in fact, human.

Because you see, unless he does the right thing and actually shows a valid birth certificate rather than a FAKE "photocopy" of one which is not even legal, there will always be some doubt as to whether or not he is eligible to hold the office of President. Obama's cousin Odinga in Kenya ran for president and tried to get Sharia Muslim law in place there. You are only looking at obama as a chance for the people of color. It is an emotional choice for you instead of a rational choice. If you really looked into obama's ideas for this country in an intellectual way, you might think differently. Unless of course you think the way Fidel Castro ran Cuba is a good way to run the U.S. (into the ground) that is, then he would be a good choice to run the U.S. There are really no good candidates, but the worst is obama because of his lack of experience, ideals, etc. If a man of color was running that had any idea of what he was doing, then he would be a good choice for President. But I think you really need to look into why you think obama is the best candidate other than the color of his skin.... |

I dunno about this. Remember the inflatable autopilot in the movie "Airplane?" Obama is not far removed from that vinyl denizen in terms of humanness. They have about the same material between their ears. Both came from factories, one in China and one on the planet Mongo. One graduated Harvard, and the other is smart enough to realize his own foot-in-mouth disease and keeps his mouth firmly shut at all times. Both have an arrogant/ignorant smile plastered on their faces at all times. Both have gotten pumped up, just at different points on the body.

Obama has done well by attracting people who don't usually vote. The problem with this, is that they don't usually vote, and Obama must keep them interested and energized until November.
His core supporters are those disillusioned by politicians; they will drop him like a hot potato when they realize he is one. |

It seems to be hard for people to accept that Obama's claim to have campained through 57 states is not a gaffe, but a warning.
We cannot imagine that he is so empty a vessel as he is. But he did not begin his campain with the idea of actually beating Hillary; he began in the assumption that she was unbeatable, and he would only increase his national recognition by running. But now unexpected bills are coming due. |

All of our words, excluding gaffes, are meant to either reveal or conceal our thoughts. Obama always tries to conceal everything about himself, such as why he spent 20 years immersed in that hateful congregation, why he held a campaign stop at the home of un unrepentent terrorist, why he has never authored any legislation that in any way reaches out to the other side, etc.
Those moments when his facade lapses and the truth about him is revealed are called "gaffes." Describing his racist grandmother as a "typical white woman" was revealing, not concealing. Stereotyping small town white folk as people who cling to guns, religion and bigotry was revealing, not concealing. Claiming that Rev. Wright's hateful views represented a "generational" difference in his church's community (even when those views were being applauded by young parishioners) was a blatant lie; and such lies are very revealing, not concealing.

Black people could not freely assemble except in church, so the black church evolved into a political and spiritual institution. Obama has many 'undecided' issues
1. He was for marriage being defined as one man and one woman, before he was against it.
2.He was for 'uncle Wright' before he was against him.
3. He was against the lapelle pin before he was for it.
4. He was against admitting his adviser spoke to Canada about NAFTA before he admitted that his advisor had done so.
5. He was a muslim, before he wasn't - he was born one, disavowed them, became atheist, then met Rev. Wright the loving man of God who spoke to his soul and now - glory halleluya - he is a christian muslim with lots of black panther ideas.
6. He was for typical white people (when he was raised by them) before he wasn't (when he needed to be down with the brothers and appeal to ALL races as a UNITING force of good).
7. He was for Farakhan when he marched in the million man march, before he wasn't when Hillary challenged him to rejected Farakhan's endorsement. He still refers to him as 'minister Farakhan'. God bless these insane ministers.

Thanks, I didn't know about how dual citizenship was handled in Kenya. I can't imagine he would have dual citizenship in Indonesia as he wasn't born there and I don't recall that his stepfather adopted him. However, there is so much we DON'T know about Obama.

but the fact is -- unfair as it is -- Bush is very un-popular. So, in the absence of substance, the Obama campaign is saying "McCain = Bush" as often as possible.
I think a case could be made that "Obama '08 = Bush '00" ... except 1000 times worse, because Obama is a far-left political version of that.

Since his father was Kenyan he would have been allowed to be Kenyan up until age 23. After that time he would have had to denounce his Kenyan citizenship because the country does not allow dual citizenship. Not sure about indonesia.....this could be an interesting twist. Obama's foreign influence in his earlier years has shaped how the thinks about america and it's citizens. Did you see his utube discussion about disarming the military. The man had a nutty gaze that made him look like he was done reciting that 'prayer' you know the kind you hear before missions are completed. It's nuts that he is a presidential contender. |

Well Obama is not going to be 48, but 47. I too was born in 1961 and he isn't "that" young, but doesn't have the experience needed to run this country. And Bush was a little older and wiser on issues that Obama is not. Bush was Govenor of Texas which gave him more experience than Obama has had. Plus, the media was never "in love" with Bush like they are Obama. Quite the contrary, Bush has always been berated for his lack of articulation and word slurs. Bush came on strong but weakended partly due to pandering to the left and worrying about what others will think. Reagan was the one that stood bold no matter what others thought or said. Obama is a marxist, unpatriotic, etc, etc, etc. With him running this country into the ground, we would surely be doomed. Not that the other candidates are great either, but they are the lesser of the evils. I am no fan of McCain, but he is a better alternative, or even Hillary would be too. And I am no fan of the Clintons. I never thought I would say this....but the Clintons look good compared to the Obamas and that is really a reach for me. |

In 2000, George W. Bush was a guy with little experience -- but everyone overlooked it because he was good with a crowd and a teleprompter. He was "likeable", and that's all that really mattered.
In 2008, Barack Obama is someone with even less experience and accomplishments than what GWB had -- but everyone overlooks it because he's good with a crowd and a teleprompter.

Bush isn't a racist.
Americans will put-up with politicians making verbal gaffes. And yes - eventually enough mistakes will add up to low approval numbers. But something MOST Americans will not stand for is blatant racism.
TUCC (Obama's home church for 20 years) is CLEARLY a racist church. Words of Rev Wright, Pfleger, and others from the pulpit are plain racist. And when racist remarks are shouted from the pulpit - the congregation applauds in waves of support.
Explain to us all - WHY would a non-racist self-respecting person attend such a church for 20 years?
Oprah left years ago. Why not the Obama family?
Simple truth: these words do not offend Barack and Michelle. He must disavow them NOW only because he wants to get elected. His own spiritual mentor/pastor even said so. |

I loathe Obama. That said, I think it's fun to identify Obama's moments of misspeaking (Sioux Falls and Sioux City; Sunshine, FL, and Sunrise, FL), but put them on a list and let it accumulate.
Elsewhere, others have advocated for categorizing his more serious mistakes in to other categories. The first, generally, includes the mistakes of history, embellishments, and misrepresentations about his positions. His evasiveness about Wright, Bittergate, his continued membership at Trinity, his evasiveness about Ayers, and his lack of knowledge about American history fall here. The second, generally, would be policy-based mistakes. Included here would be his talking to rogues without preconditions, the misunderstanding about the Iranian threat, his unawareness about the Hanford cleanup when campaigning in Oregon, his support for partial-birth abortion, and the like.
Let's feel free to laugh about category 1, but that's mere misspeaking. He's subject to much harsh and well-deserved criticism for the second and third categories. |

Obama is a pathetic, far-distant second on gaffe's to those endless stupidities our current Looser-in-Chief has uttered. Bush has entire 365 day calendars dedicated to his pearls of wisdom.

I agree with the writer that Obama's gaffometer is running pretty high. But the writer's premise, that Obama is a child of the 80s and comparable to the millenial generation, is offbase. The man is not THAT young: He was born in 1961 and will be 48 in a couple of months. The internet was not widely used until around the mid 90s (Yahoo was founded in 1995 and Google in 1998, for some perspective) when he was well into his 30s. His gaffes are probably a combination of his true beliefs, campaign trail fatigue, and lack of knowlege in some areas--but not because he is a child of the internet age, which he isn't. |

I think the author has a point, but I think it isn't related to the PC revolution and the internet. My impression is that Obama is just a profoundly ignorant of American history due to being raised and educated by leftists and then becoming part of the Chicago radical chic leftist culture. |

Obama is going to receive the Democrats nomination because of a perfect political storm: 1) Most democrats want the Clintons gone
2) Obama speaks well from a teleprompter (ie Bill Clinton-esque)
3) He was "against the war" - although he didn't have the REAL responsibility to vote on it
4) Obama, being black, represents the "progressive" opportunity for Democrats to show their progressive-ness,
The Democrats deserve him.
He's inexperienced, unvetted, associates with a racist church, and prone to Al Gore type gaffes (make believe).
Obama will lose the sure-thing election (Bush being so unpopular) because of Obama's two worse character traits: Stubbornness and Arrogance.
How tightly does Obama hold to dead-weight and mistakes? Rev Wright (before being disowned), Trinity Unity Church Membership, Meeting with enemies without preconditions, etc.
His arrogance? "Brushing off" his arms/legs symbolizing Hillary, Bitter-gate, his wife's constant cannonizing Barack's intelligence and how Barack will heal souls, etc. |

I would argue that many "Obama Gaffes" are really his heartfelt feelings. Then he realizes voters will not accept them so they become Gaffes. Then for the next 2-4 days he and his handlers explain what he "Really" meant, hoping voters buy their spin.
His height of naiveness is that he thought race/hate would not be an issue. In his Simplemindedness way of reasonng he thinks he can associate with Racists and America Haters but the voters will not hold him accountable. He wants everything that can harm him to be "OffLimits" for discussion while he and "his people" continue to bash America and the European part of this countries heritage. Talk about blind unlearnedness. He and his wife may have an Ivy League College Degrees, but they have No American Values.
We see this "Emperor has no clothes" and has no business being the Leader of this Nation through his lies.

but a demi-god to the press. Nothing is ever made of his gaffes. The press jumps on any error a conservative makes. But Obama can call Wesleyan University Wellesley-an and the audience laugh at thim and he doesn't even know why they are laughing. Couldn't the press have explained the joke/mistake? Yeah, I know. Its very minor. But it would have been major if a Republican had made the same error. |
