Edwards Has Only Raised $6 Million
Posted by: Patrick Ruffini at 10:52 AM

From a Joe Trippi email:

This is it— with 10 days left in the second quarter, we're about two-thirds of the way towards our goal of raising $9 million—double what we raised at this time in the 2004 race. And I know what you're thinking—my $25 doesn't matter for a hill of beans against all those four-figure checks rolling in to the campaigns.

This isn't wildly off the mark form Marc Ambinder's Q2 fundraising predictions, which probably have been heavily massaged by the campaigns themselves. But still, this is well, ehh...

When it comes to fundraising, there is no Big Three on the Democratic side, just a Big Two: Obama and Clinton. And Obama is currently projected to outraise Clinton. But while Obama and Clinton are projected to hold steady or gain ground from Q1 (and at give or take $25-30 million), we know that Edwards will lose ground.

Now, Edwards has been running a frugal campaign and his COH will probably rival that of the relatively free-spending Republican frontrunners, but I'm very close to reverting to my old position on Edwards: he's DOA.

Like David Axelrod says, good on paper, but he can't close the deal.

Who was that Edwards character
anyway? Where did he get the hubris to think anyone would want him as President of the United States? Probably the same place that that Bloomberg character gets his from.

Not Good
It is not good for Reps to lose Edwards too early in the race. Obama becomes the only anti Hillary and he may actually beat her in the longer run. Edwards needs to stay in and win IA.

The more important numbers are the McCain numbers and his cash on hand. If he raises 13 mill with maybe 8 mill on hand, he is still dangerous. He is a skilled politican and a fighter. He can throw states to one candidate or another. It is enough money to keep him in the race.

The Rudy numbers are also important. I expected Rudy to raise a lot more in the 2 Q. With drooping poll numbers will he have enough cash to buy big closely contested states in the ad wars on Super T?

The biggest question is how much will Thompson raise in 3 Q and 4 Q. Will he have the money to win outside of the South? Which, if any states will get in the South?

Feb 5th
Since we are all speculating I have one to throw out. What happens after Feb. 5th? Everyone says it'll be the be all and end all, but that many states from so many different areas of the country opens itself to the possibility of giving everyone some states but no definite winner. What then?

Edwards has set the agenda
Whether or not Edwards wins his party's nomination, he has already had a profound influence on the agenda for the coming election.
By calling for specifics instead of generalities and slogans, he has forced the other leading Democratic candidates to also be specific about
their plans for the country. By contrast, we can expect the Republicans to offer "fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here" and "no teaching evolution without teaching the Bible" and other absurdities required by the Luddites of the right.

Edwards seems to do pretty well in the areas where he has spent a lot of time campaigning; could it be that he really is in tune with what the people want?

media won't let him fall
the media won't let Edwards fall, just teh same way they will do all they can to keep mccain in the race. i doubt he is ever considered out of the game completly. i doubt however he takes iowa. my guess is second place again.

either way, i think it is good taht he is out. I can't stand the guy. His ideas are horrendous and lack any kind of economical sense. HE would literally ruin america as an economic superpower.

if we want to compete with asia in teh 20th century, we ahve some work to do, electing a socialist is NOT the way to do that. we know that from europe.

not that hillary or obama would be any better. Clinton however was relatively pro business for a democrat. dobut hillary would follow suit however.

Oooooh. Patrick Ruffini is about to declare Edwards "DOA."

Funniest thing I keep hearing ...
... is that Edwards and McCain are locks for their respective nominations.

*By calling for specifics instead of generalities and slogans, he has forced the other leading Democratic candidates to also be specific about their plans for the country.*

I'm sorry, what specifics ?

*By contrast, we can expect the Republicans to offer "fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here" and "no teaching evolution without teaching the Bible" and other absurdities required by the Luddites of the right.*

Ah such a fresh air of unbiased comments. as a luddite, comments like that from intellectual giants like smilinjack really cause me to take stock of my political beliefs and re-evaluate where I stand.

HAIRCUTS
No one in their right mind is going to give Edwards any money when they know he will just spend it on expensive haircuts. Edwards was finished before he ever started.
