Why Money Matters
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:42 AM
You've probably wondered how Mike Huckabee, with relatively little money, has been able to get to the top in Iowa. One of the reasons is that as a likable underdog, Huckabee did not have to endure attacks. The real race -- the kind that your about to see -- has just begun. Mitt Romney has the money to run this ad -- and others like it -- day and night for the next three weeks.  Huckabee doesn't have enough money to really respond -- or if he does, you might see one Huckabee ad for every five Romney spots attacking Huckabee.  By the time Romney is done with Huckabee, most Iowans will think he's Mike Dukakis. The good news for Huckabee is that the folks who actually bother to show up to Caucus are less likely to be swayed by ads ...

I call BS on you my friend I live in AR and will as always now share the truth.
On the 70% law you are dead wrong! Law enforcement and prosecutors had to make a emergency tip down to Little Rock during session and beg and plead the legislature to go against Huckabee. Those of us in AR have our brave law enforcment men and women to thank for standing up to the Governor and saying sir you are wrong and we will not let you do this.

CFG is a great group and that rival you mention was actually one of Huckabees biggest supporters who gave amazing amounts of money to get Huckabee elected only to be let down by Huckabee's liberal ways. So he said I can not support you anymore you are a liberal to which Huckabee snapped and has been fighting with him ever since. You may wonder what was it that started that fight well that goes into your last point. Huckabee took a no tax pledge and quickly broke it raised taxes and when called on it basically said I am governor so deal with it you people don't know what is best give me your money. Mitt Romney made promises as Governor and fulfilled everyone one of them. Do not support Huckabee he is a natrual liar who has broken the law and will be found out soon.

chuckP, wagmanfigit, and the truth
ChuckP - Gov. Huck listened to the request of those in law enforcement and in charge of the prison system. Recommendation: allow those prisoners whose behavior was exemplary while imprisoned a chance to serve 50% of their sentence. Bad behavior prisoners had to serve at least the 70% minimum.

Wagmanfigit - It's not a crime to be rich, it can be a good thing, this is America. But a close associate of Mitt's from Boston, John Childs who is wealthy, and a Romney donor has spread a great deal of $$$ to the "Club For Growth". Coincidentally the CFG is running a negative/ distorting national ads against Huck. The chairman of the CFG is an Arkansas rival of Huckabee. Hmmm.
Money can be good sure... But not always.
John McCain can be thanked for soft $$$

the truth - You believe that Romney has been solidly pro life. Never came down on the side of
choice. Well then why didn't Mitt veto Government Funded Abortions when it came accross his desk in Massachusetts. Was that part of the pledge he gave voters to get elected?

Pro Life, Pro Choice, Mitt CHOSE!!!

And as far as Mitt and lower taxes goes...
The Massachusetts tax burden went up by 2% a year under Mitt. (or as some call him Fee-Fee.)
Arkansas, 1% a year under Huckabee.

Both Mitt and Mike have taken the No Tax Pledge.

I wonder if this will be another pledge that Mitt will CHOOSE to honor?

Money
First I also believe social issues are very impportant and could never vote for Rudy in a primary. Romeny has had a sincere change of his view on abortion and public policy. He has always felt abortion was wrong and he never signed a pro-choice piece of legislation into law so is right on social issues right along with Huckabee so that should be a non issue. So next we check their fiscal issues. Romney is able to raise money and spend his own on a presidential race so the government won't take my money. Huckabee is running so the government will take my money. I think I will stick with the guys who want lower taxes.

When did being rich become a crime
I'm not rich and I don't hold it against other people if they are. There seems to be this distrust for Romney because he is rich. Has the liberal media brainwashed us that much into thinking the only way people get rich is threw heartless and dishonest ways. What happened to the American dream of working hard for your money. Yes I know Romney was born into wealth but he has gone out and worked to make the money he has made. Also there is the idea that a man that can run a campaign well enough to make that much money is one how has the leadership skills to run a Country. That can't be the only thing because as we know Democrats have raised more money then Republicans. But it can be said that money can and should play a roll in who we pick as the next president.

With respect to crime, the argument you are making is that Romney is bad because he inherited a bad law and did not make it better, but Huckabee is good because he tried to take a good law and make it worse. This is a very creative defense, but I'm not sure I would want to run on it.

Money isn't the biggest issue.
Even if it was who do you think would do better? Plastic Man, who has spent millions and millions by the time the Iowa primary is over? Wow that is some powerful spending. But thats those people who call themselves economic conservatives. AKA fake conservatives.

The most important issue we face is the social conservative issues, which there has been a great fake conservative movement to try to suppress it. Huckabee is true to the social conservative issues, and that is why I'm voting for him.

You just showed you have a liberal mindset like Huckabee. See when the government gives you a tax refund you should not be happy it should make you mad. They took YOUR money used it and then give it back with no interest. Would you like a bank to that? Huckabee did the same thing he took our money and even though he was told we do not need to raise taxes he did it. And now the state says yeah we have all of your money and we are going to figure out how to spend it you should all thank Mike Huckabee for taking way more of your money than was actually needed. Thanks Mike for taking my money but I do not vote for or support people who think that that surplus is a great thing and that it is your money to spend.

Huckabee hasn't run from the fact that the net increase in sales tax went up one cent over the ten years as Governor.
Huckabee didn't run from the fact that Arkansas had $850 million dollar surplus when he left office.

Interestingly though, you like to look back at track records of other candidates, but not back at what Mitt did or said. Flip flopping.
The truth is it's going to come out. The only way it won't is if Romney losses Iowa, South Carolina and Florida and never achieves true front-runner status.

So you think that if someone raped my daughter and was sentenced to 30 years in prison he should be set free at 15? Let me tell you as a father in Arkansas Huckabee has made the life of children less safe after his 10 years in office. He raised taxes and fees on a regular basis and refuses to admit to it so he resorts to lies about his record. At least Romney is man enough to say yes I raised fees and he is how I justify it. Huckabee lies says he did not do it, it was the courts or the people of AR, or some other line of garbage. I can tell you Huckabee led the charge in raising taxes over and over again. He also blasted Republicans one time because they went to hear Bush talk about his tax increases instead of voting in a special session called by Huckabee to raise our taxes. When being told of Huckabee's attacks one brave legislator was quoted in the paper as saying I would rather be with my President talking about lowering taxes then voting with my Governor to raise them. This is what we faced in AR, a Governor who raised taxes, expanded government, and was weak on crime and immigration. Now he lies about all this.

GOV. ROMNEY: I just talked about, about guns. I told you what my position was, and what I, what I did as governor; the fact that I received the endorsement of the NRA. And so...

GOV. ROMNEY: You know, when I--of course--when I was--when I ran for, for governor of Massachusetts, I put together at the end of my campaign, asked my traveling adviser and the first person who helped me in my debate prep, to write down all the promises I made as governor. And there were 92 or 93 and just to round it up to 100, I added some more at my inaugural address. I honored all of those promises. I fought for them, and I'm very proud of that. I ran as an individual who would not raise taxes and I didn't. I ran as an individual...

MR. RUSSERT: Fees, you did.

GOV. ROMNEY: ...and I raised fees on--for 8 percent of the budget shortfall and acknowledged that. I also said I'm going to fight for the death penalty and I did. I said I was opposed to same-sex marriage and I fought same-sex marriage. I said I was for English immersion in our schools. Got English immersion in our schools. I got all of our citizens on a track to have health insurance. I'm proud of the things I accomplished as a governor. Took on real tough problems, got the job done.

The whole truth
Again, for clarity, the whole truth is Huckabee wanted to reduce the 70% mandatory sentence to be served by convicted criminals down to 50%. The whole truth will help you in making valid points for Mitt in the future.

Now on to Mitt's "tough" no parole or commutation as a Governor stance.

Anthony Circosta who at age 13 committed a gun crime. He shot someone in the arm with a BB gun the pellet didn't break the skin. Still a gun crime. Anthony has since grown up, spent tours of duty in Anbar, Iraq leading a squad of 20 as part of the Army Reserves.

Now back in the US Anthony wanted to become a police officer.
Sorry, Mitt doesn't consider Anthony's case to be worthy of consideration. No pardon. No job on the police force for Anthony.

Now if there's more to this story that I read yesterday, I would like to know. I'm genuinely interested in the whole truth. Mitt may want to get out in front of this story.

---------------

If one asserts that Mitt is/was "racist" because his church disallowed blacks from serving in a clerical capacity until 30 years ago, then does that mean that Southern Baptists are/were "racist" since they were the denomination overwhelmingly responsible for segregation in the South ?

Many 'good Trinitarian Christian' Southern Baptists were the Bull Connor police officers seen spraying black folks with fire hoses in the 1960s.
And many Southern Baptists disallowed black folks from merely getting a soup & sandwich at lunch counters.

Besides, while the LDS ban on blacks serving as clergy was wrong, it is not even comparable to the awful segregation in the South.
I don't think Southern Baptists want to go down that road.

I realize that some evangelicals see Pastor Huckabee's Presidential candidacy as a divine intervention and thus are using religion as a way to divide voters.

But theology ought to be kept out of public political discourse.
By seeking mainstream legitimacy for theological quizzes of a Mormon candidate, evangelicals inadvertently are sliding down a slippery slope which will result in the secular mainstream media putting YOUR faith to the same scrutiny.

People will get sad and annoyed in seeing all of Plastic Man's ads played on TV as they try to watch Its a Wonderful Life. It totally repressents the old corrupt political way that people are getting so tired with.

The Plastic man supporters and the Ron Paul supporters are becoming more and more alike each day. Money is important, but you cannot force someone to vote for you with it.

What the plastic man fans don't get is that while he is better than someone like Giuliani, plastic man looks like a great gamble and comprimise to everyone else.

I appreciate that he changed his pro-abortionist views, but attacking viciously the most pro-life cannidate we have is not a good sign.

Its going to be hard to get people excited about plastic man, and that is why attack ads designed to make someone else look bad are part of the plan.

I don't recall which pundit it was that made the comparison (Peggy Noonan?) but she wondered if we today would vote in Reagan over Carter. Reagan, a divorced, not outwardly religious previous actor, over Carter an evangelical who builds houses for the poor.

Of course we all know how their respective presidencies succeeded or failed.

Pro V-1 you need to know that while AR has a 10 year minimum sentence and a 70% law that states criminals have to serve 70% of their time Huckabee tried to do away with the 70% law so that even violent criminals could be pardoned, commuted, or just released as early as they can. Luckily a few brave republican prosecutors and legislators stood up to Gov Huck and put a stop to this in the legislature. Huck was very mad at them. So yes Huck is weak on crime it is a fact.

limited Number
There are a limited number of voters who use a lexicographic decision model on abortion. Most voters find Romney acceptable on abortion, anyway.

Huck can be driven back down by appealing to those voters who use a multiattribute decision model (Almost all voters eventually vote as if they had use this model). As Huck's really lousy record on other issues becomes known it will make him a lot less attractive. Most people are not one issue voters they vote on an overall impression.
BG writes: Tuesday, December, 18, 2007 9:32 AM
perceptions
A very solid left right to the chin. Further it is a two sided argument. Romney starts with the Marriage Amendment where both are positive and then uses crime as a tie breaker.

The pardons grip your attention and the meth line is a killer.

It will tend to move all those who care about crime and it reinforces the Wayne Dumond consequences. It goes right to the heart of family and personal security (core values).

Do you trust Huckabee to make you safer?

He let out a 1000 criminals and 12 murders. If you can't trust him to make AR safer as governor do you trust him to make you and the country safer.

This is a great ad on many levels and it works.

As it moves votes away from Huck (even if they go to Fred or McCain or Rudy) that changes perceptions about Huck's ability to win. As Huck's IA poll number drop, Huck's national poll numbers will drop. Further, his core followers will tend to sense defeat and discouragement.

Perceptions are real in their consequences.
