The Forbes Factor (Bigger Than You Think)
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 4:04 PM

Reason 101 why Steve Forbes could prove to be a huge "get" for Rudy Giuliani.  This is from 1999:

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- The Union Leader newspaper endorsed Steve Forbes in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, saying he may not be charismatic, but he's no phony.

In an editorial to be published Friday, Publisher Joseph McQuaid said Forbes is the only candidate who displays "steady, intelligent, conservative leadership" who is "God-fearing, respectful of innocent life, and determined to restore a sense of decency to the White House."

"Steve Forbes is not charismatic. (Some would say he looks like a geek.) But he's also not a phony," the editorial said. "Ask him a question, you'll get a thoughtful answer, not a soundbite. He is one tough, smart customer who can be the strong, principled leader America needs."

By contrast, the paper said Texas Gov. George W. Bush and Arizona Sen. John McCain "seem much more interested in what the news media say about them than in their own messages." ...

In 2000, Forbes was also endorsed by movement conservative giants like Phyllis Schlafly, Morton Blackwell, and Paul Weyrich. Townhall contributing editor Ken Blackwell also served as his National Chairman.

These are the same conservative leaders who (with the exception McCain's having endorsed Ken Blackwell's gubernatorial race -- in the primary), have tended to have a rocky relationship with John McCain (As I recently noted, McCain is seeking to bypass the filter of conservative leaders).

By securing Forbes' endorsement, could Rudy be similtaneously making a move in New Hampshire -- and making a play for the support of conservative leaders?

UPDATE: 5:30 PM

So why is Steve Forbes endorsing Rudy?  According to National Journal's On Call blog:  "Ex-MA Gov. Mitt Romney was not a lover of Steve Forbes's flat tax, and, as a "concerned citizen," took out ads in Boston, New Hampshire and Iowa in 1996 to send the publisher that message."

Meaning of Forbes Factor
Forbes will be very important in getting the conservative vote which up to now has been ambivalent, at best, to Rudy.

Forbes is perceived to be one of the few people with any integrity in the political arena. By integrity I mean someone who says what they mean and means what they say.

it does not matter
I don't think Christian evangelists, well the Christian Right like me, will ever vote for Guiliani. His personal baggage is too much to swallow. If we can elect president like him, then surely we can elect just about anyone.

Those who call themselves conservatives must be consistent. Either you are a conservative or a liberal disguised as conservative.

To believe or to pretend that only Rudy could save American from the Muslim fanatics or terrorist regimes is just too silly.

It's amazing how many "conservatives" fall into this fallacy and are willing to sacrifice their core values such as pro-life and pro-traditional marriage for this silly thinking.

Malcom Forbes?
Phil: what's up with that?

Flattened Tax code
I expect that there are lots of us who were/are fans of Steve Forbes' message and the flat tax. The problem with Steve of course was 'electability' in the form of telegenic presence (or lack). That coupled with lack of governmental resume might not have been good. So, for those of us who like Steve, its a very good endorsement.

I wasn't aware of Romney's opposition; that's good to know.

Still, its not flat tax/fair tax, re-hashed tax rates etc. The problem is the tax code. Its impossible for anyone to say that they fully understand the tax code or that they're fully compliant with a tax code they can't understand. We need someone who's willing to focus on forcing congress to write a new tax code that is comprehensible and somewhere in the range of less than 10000 words in length.

Forbes endorses Giuliani update
z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z

I subscribe to Forbes Magazine. Malcom Forbes writes to the one-world globalist elites. I don't think anyone was waiting for a sign from him before deciding. I predict Dan Quayle will endorse Giuliani too. More z-z-z-z-z-z-z-z!

What is the point?
This is a great post, but what is the point of asking if Giuliani is making a play for NH and conservatives? Of course he is, unless somehow I missed a memo that stated that Rudy was in the race to lose.

The bigger question this and all of the recent polls raise is: does McCain really have a shot? And that answer is no. There are not enough people that like him for him to win the nomination. Look at it this way: He has been running for president for 8 years and his most recent number are not even double that of a C-list actor that has not decided if he is going to run. Like Hillary, everyone know that McCain is running, yet he can muster only between 13 and 22%. To make this worse, Zogby (and I do not really trust Zogby) has him at 13%, only 4 points better than Thompson.

While you have said in the past McCain has a great staff and a good message, this cannot make up for the fact that Republicans do not like him. AND no, it is not all because of BCRA as your VLOG tried to point out. I hate to always be giving you a hard time about this, but McCain is done. He had a shot in 2000 and did not make it. And to let you know, the reason Republicans do not like him is really his own doing. In 2000 he pretended to be this Maverick Senator and that won him a lot of support from weak Rs, Is and conservative Ds. The problem is, in doing so he alienated many Rs and the Republican base now sees him as this Maverick, a Maverick that cannot be trusted.

McCain is a great American, Republican and Senator, but he is done. The only question that remains is: Can Thompson or some other candidate catch Giuliani?
