A Month Off for Bad Behavior
Posted by: Michele Bachmann at 4:13 PM
Today, the Democrat majority in the House of Representatives got their wish. By a mere one vote (213 to 212), the Democrats will be able to sneak out of Washington for the entire month of August without doing anything to address our nation's sky-rocketing energy prices. Just 17 Democrats broke ranks with Speaker Pelosi and joined the 195 Republicans in voting against this measure, but we still fell one vote short.

With gas prices over $4 a gallon, the Democrats have voted to give themselves a vacation at the same time gas prices are preventing Americans from taking vacations of their own. And some around here wonder why Congress' approval rating is at 9%.

The July 28th issue of Time Magazine showcased a rather scathing essay lambasting the inaction of the 110th Congress entitled, Throw the Bums Out.

"The 260 laws passed by the 110th Congress represent a 30-year low, and they include the naming of 74 post offices, not to mention the nonbinding resolutions designating July National Watermelon Month and recognizing dirt as an essential natural resource. Approval of Congress has sunk to a record low: 9% of people in a Rasmussen poll think lawmakers are doing a good or excellent job. The happiesth news in this for the Democrats running the place is that about 40% of voters think the Republicans are still in charge."

Let me tell you something:  If the Republicans were in charge, we’d be taking action to tap into American energy resources and cut the price of gas now.

The Democrats are demonstrating politics at its worse. Rather than acting now on crucial issues like energy reform, they're simply going through the motions, pointing fingers and playing political games.  And, they’re skating by unscathed:  As this essay points out, most Americans wrongly believe that Republicans are still in charge.

We can act now to bring energy costs down, but sadly the Democrats have chosen political posturing over political action.

Better off...
The fewer laws passed, the less damage they can do, the better off the country is.
arngret writes: Wednesday, July, 30, 2008 4:39 PM
So what else is new??
Just again our do-nothing Democrats show how useful they are. Maybe there could be a vote of no confidence to have them removed permanantly!!! Just wishful thinking.
paddy o'furniture writes: Wednesday, July, 30, 2008 4:45 PM
So if they take off for a month....
...and nobody notices, does that mean we don't need them anymore.....

Hold up a mirror
Wow! That was a dumb entry. I can't imagine the stats would be any different if the GOP was in charge.

I'm very tired of hearing calls for "Let's wipe out the other side!" Let's face it. Half the country likes the GOP and half the country likes the Dems.

But NO... we have to crank up the partisan rhetoric, demean the other side, howl in fury that nothing is getting done.

Heh, Michele. Grow up!

"Cut the price of gas now"? Why lie?
"
Let me tell you something: If the Republicans were in charge, we’d be taking action to tap into American energy resources and cut the price of gas now."

If only that were true. For one thing, the GOP turned "socialism creep" into an outright amBush when they controlled everything and, once again, nothing will "cut the price of gas now." It is counter-productive to keep peddling that lie. That is why it is so hard to get anything done, lying. Just like when we justified the Iraq War war by "fighting to bring democracy to Iraq". No, we were taking the most expensive route to defending our oil interests in the ME. Why do we always have to ruin perfectly defensible positions by couching it in a lie? Exasperating.
Fat Man writes: Wednesday, July, 30, 2008 5:08 PM
I disagree with a couple of assertions

While I agree with the sentiment that the Democrats are hiding from this issue, I disagree with a couple of assertions in this post.

First, the Democrats are not "unscathed" by this issue. They are in control of a Congress held in record low esteem by the American public. That's not unscathed.

Second, it's not true that most Americans think the Republicans are still in charge. 40% is not most Americans.

a life long dem is switching parties
As a democrat and a lifelong resident of New Jersey I am tremendously concerned about America’s national and economic security in regards to the price of imported oil
Please reconsider your earlier position this is one of the most critical issue facing the United States and the time for action is past due
Please do not underestimate the degree of my concern
Consider it is a reminder that I and millions of Americans consider dependency on imported oil a dire situation and a top priority
Thank you for your sincere consideration of this vital national issue

Nothing will cut the price of gas now!!!

in what delusionary universe is someone who says that living. The price of crude has dropped 16% in the last two weeks. Some of these posters are in desperate need of help in perceiving reality!!!!
Brianbnc writes: Wednesday, July, 30, 2008 5:56 PM
Nice one
"I say we.....
....change the locks while their gone..... "

I agree totally.

eddie too - wrong. Supply will cut the price, even globally. Mix that with a cut back from us citizens and we have potential for some real savings.

I would agree if you were to suggest it would be a temporary reprieve, but the price would drop. It would drop sharply.

Basic economics, my friend.
Rogue writes: Wednesday, July, 30, 2008 6:10 PM
So the only chance now is Bush
calling an emergency session right?
tunneler writes: Wednesday, July, 30, 2008 6:13 PM
Nice try eddie...
..But your assertion lacks credibility. The price of crude has dropped precisely because the executive branch (President Bush) has lifted the offshore drilling moratorium leading to the perception that the US is serious about opening our resources for exploitation.

If congress fails to do likewise and really open things up for production of our resources, the commodities markets will figure in this lack of resolve/concern to complete a task to the cost of oil in the future (hence commodities futures) and oil prices will rise once again, and they will rise with avengence.

Forget $4 a gallon, that will be a pipe dream, start talking about $6 a gallon or more.
Wesley writes: Wednesday, July, 30, 2008 6:30 PM
who voted to go
I was wondering if anyone had a list of the members that voted to go on vacation? I would like to know that way I can vote to remove them. They don't care about anything but themselfs, So why should I care about them.
1SGrtd writes: Wednesday, July, 30, 2008 10:03 PM
Why wait
We would be at least voting on oil. This year I think the Reps are learning a lesson. The Dems are spending money left and right. They in the past are guilty of most of the things the Dems are doing now.I am not sure if it would be better for the Dems to take control are we should elect fewer but less than the Dems want to Congress. We are spending to much and need to get off Arab oil if nothing else. Can you imagine what it will be like if a war breaks out in Iran. No matter how it starts it will make us drill so why wait?

You could be right, common sense tells me that if
the approval rating of Congress is 9%, then
a huge number of American voters are a tad peeved. They'll look at the ballot and see the
culprit, the incumbant DemonRat's name and vote
for his challenger. They arrogantly believe
'06 gave them a mandate, when it was a retaliation against the then GOP majority.
Don't you think it can't happen again? I'm
cautiously optimistic. If I'm right, Nov 4 will rank up there with 94, and I guarantee we will see a lot of media sycophants and demoRATS turn
purple.

I hope it costs them the Presidency.

We need people leading this nation who are NOT afraid to make TOUGH decisions and stand by them, even if they are not popular.

Let's see if the Democrats in Congress can run cars on hot wind.

Remember the GOP walkout?

Hey Michele, you were a part of that juvenile walkout stunt Republican members of Congress pulled last winter weren't you? What did that do toward solving our energy crisis? How productive was that? In case your feeble memory needs refreshing:

60 seats in the upcoming elections. How could anyone vote for more Dems who will do absolutely nothing.

Remember Pelosi needs time off to do her book tour. How she ever got into office is beyond me.

in charge
To Pasadena Phil and others commenting.

yes the Republicans were in charge in Washington for a while, but not in charge of the energy policy.

The environ-mentals have been in charge of that since the 3 mile island mishap. (if you are to young to remember - google it)

A question for the E's.

When we are fully energy independent, with windmills and solar everywhere, what will power ocean shipping? what will power air travel? Rubber Bands?

Bachmann Blames Dems
Whats new? It's the only thing she has done.

It's ironic that she is complaining they left town; the first thing she did when she got to DC was complain about working fulltime.

By the way, why no mention of the oil spill when down in the gulf; opps that wouldn't be photo op.

Who is this wonderful lady?
I have tuned into C-span many times at night to
hear the special order speeches.. too bad they are so late at night..some of the best I've heard.
If the real folks would pay attention ..the other
side would be packing their bags..I mean there are some dingdongs.. how did they get elected ?
Then Rep. Bachmann or Rep. King.. step up..
finally.. sanity..the Kings English..good manners..
Heard Michele on Lauras radio show this morning..
this lady will have a great future..gives us hope.
Maybe the House of Congress isn't the 2cd largest nut - house after all !!

I still can't see why we give them full benefits and retirement for this - talk about pork barrel spending. Who gave them it?...oh yeah, they did. Incredible.

Wow.
I liked the blog pretty well, but many of the comments below left a lot to be desired. While not a huge fan of the Republicans, the current Democratic controlled Congress is the worst I have seen in all my years. I want them gone, striped of their special status and perks and preferably shipped off to the third world country of their choice, except I would not wish those poor third world citizens to suffer anymore than they already do.

Pelosi's Soviet style of Leadership
The Politburo did what was best for the elites in the Politburo, not the Russian People! Nancy Pelosi is no different. She has finally shown her true colors and, astonishingly, completely blows off what's best for us, the American People. I am deeply offended by this. These so-called politicians are paid over $14,000 PER MONTH -- That's a lot of tax payer money for not doing the job she was hired for. This Stalinist style is revolting and I hope the American People make her pay come election time by throwing the jerks out who won't do the right thing for the People.
