The removal of two Republican election workers from a Warren Township polling site - for using improper methods to challenge voters' rights to cast a ballot - has prompted local Republican Party leaders to issue a statement of regret.
The two officials - an official challenger and a clerk - were removed by unanimous vote of the Marion County Election Board.
The officials were reportedly challenging voters with information obtained through party affiliation reports, which is not one of the accepted challenges such as a person's address, age or lack of ID.
"We were disappointed to hear of the incident regarding these two workers. The Marion County Republican Party was not aware of these alleged activities, nor did the Party instruct any worker to engage in such behavior," Marion County Republican Party Chairman Tom John said in a statement issued at 2 p.m. |

Having grown up in the Sixties and watching the Black Panthers on TV every night, spouting their revolutionary dogma, I KNOW what a Black Panther looks like, and these thugs fit the bill just fine. They may not have been wearing "official" Panther insignia, but the uniform says it all. Looks like they're trying out for Hussein's Civilian National Security Force. I agree with Jon. If you saw a soldier casting his vote at your polling station in his fatigues, that doesn't count. He's got a right to vote too. I was in line with 20 soldiers this morning and that didn't intimidate me at all. I'm pretty sure they wanted me to vote for McCain which I was already doing, but we didn't talk about it because that would have been electioneering and we don't do that.
So, you make this accusation -- how about some facts? Mercenaries, by definition, are doing what they do for pay? So who hired them? What group? Why were they white? I mean, I've got a friend whose husband is Blackwater and he's Hispanic and reports that most of the guys in Kuwait with him are either Hispanic or black -- there's just a few white guys. I'm not intimidated by black people, male or female, large or small. I work for community mental health where the clients occasionally threaten to eat my liver with a nice chiate, so --you know -- intimidation just isn't something I feel very often out in the real world of sane people.
However, night sticks -- well, I find those intimidating. My reason for that? Well, you see, I don't see why you would need to bring a night stick to a polling station unless you were thinking of using it. And, why would you need to? And, if you did need to, who would you use it on? Well, if you were really security, you might use it on some violent type, but the video (I'm told, because I can't access video at work) doesn't show anyone else being violent or intimidating -- just the guys with the night sticks. Black, white, Asian, Martian -- it's not their skin color that would intimidate me, but the fact that they're carrying weapons -- I find that intimidating. Wouldn't keep me from voting because, hey, Alaskans can conceal carry without a license and -- well, don't bring a nightstick to a gun fight. |

Of their skin color, what their wearing or who they may side with, for some two men standing in front of a polling place with a nightstick could feel intimadating. If this is what our country will be like with a Obama administration then we will live in concerning times.

I'm not sure how I would have reacted to seeing these two guys in front of a polling place, but I notice they didn't say or do anything until the guy with the camera started asking them questions.
They shouldn't have been there, they shouldn't have said they were "Security", and they should be made to leave, but still, this isn't much of a story. |
