Lynne Cheney for U.S. Senate

It would seem that Lynne Cheney's office has not closed the door on succeeding the late Sen. Craig Thomas of Wyoming:
A spokesperson for Lynne Cheney, wife of the vice president, would notdeny that she, too, was a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat, accordingto The Associated Press. When I heard that Bush had picked Cheney in 2000, I remember thinking that the future President could have just as easily chosen Lynne instead of Dick. She served in the Reagan and Bush 41 Administrations and developed a reputation as an articulate and strong conservative, co-hosting CNN's Crossfire Sunday. Recently, she was not afraid to tear into Wolf Blitzer for airing al-Qaeda propaganda.
The process of selecting a replacement for Sen. Thomas is an interesting one. Democratic Gov. Dave Freudenthal will make the pick from a short list of three candidates selected by the Republican state committee. Under this process, it's difficult to see how Lynne Cheney could be selected. Freudenthal would likely pick the weakest candidate, or the least conservative one. Would a Democrat willingly select a conservative champion who would instantly become one of the most recognized Republican leaders in the Senate?
The only way it would work is if the Wyoming central committee were to clear the field for Cheney. Just forward one name to the Governor: Lynne Cheney. Actually, this is not a bad idea whether or not Cheney is a candidate. Why give the Democratic Governor, who will no doubt be on the phone with Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer throughout this, any discretion at all?

The republican party leaders are too stupid.. |
I think the key is would Lynne run again in 2008? The Gov might appt. Lynn knowing should would serve till 08 and give up the seat. Creating another open seat for the GOP to defend. An open seat which might be easier for Gov. Freundenthal to run for. |

Why would she want to deal with even more Beltway crap. She has it tough enough with 90% of the media, 65% of the country and 60% of the politicians whom already hate her and her husband. As great as it would be to have this smart woman in the Senate, does anyone really think she wants to hang out with buffoons we call Congressional leaders??? Not a chance. |
WHAT A TERRIC IDEA. SHE IS EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT AND A LOGICAL INDEPENDENT THINKER. BIGGEST PROBLEM: LOCK STEP MEDIA BIAS.
WOULD BE TERRIFIC FOR OUR COUNTRY.
ESPECIALLY, SINCE MOST IN CONGRESS HAVE BECOME THE ENEMY OF THE CITIZENS. CONGRESS WANTS MORE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE AND HAVE NEVER FOUND A TAX THEY DID NOT LIKE. THEY REPRESENT THEMSELVES AND THEIR EGOS. RARE COMMON SENSRE APPLIED.
CONGRESS NEEDS CONSTANT WATCH, TO SEE WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO SNEAK INTO BILLS. TOTAL DISREGARD FOR SHOWING ANY BENEFITS FOR THE TAXPAYERS. JUST MORE & MORE TAXES, REGULATIONS, AND CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE. THEY JUST DO NOT CARE! AFTER ALL, IT DOES NOT APPLY TO THEM... I CALL THEM PARASITES ON THE FREE MARKET SYSTEM.

I'm a guy saying this, but this would empower women and clear the road for a female (and hopefully conservative) President in 2012...
It's the right choice as well because Lynne Cheney has had to toil in anonymity to 90%+ of the conservative movement for so long.
Just make her the only choice or her plus two supporters. And if she forfeits the seat in 2008... shame. on. her. |

Why would Lynne serve? For the same reason her husband agreed to serve as Vice President -- she loves this country and would serve even though it would require great personal and family sacrifice. When Gov. Bush asked Dick Cheney to be part of his ticket, Dick was within a few years of retiring to Wyoming and spending more time with his grandkids. Serving as Vice President has cost the family millions of dollars and, more importantly, has cost him countless hours with his family. His only motivation for serving was love of country.
Would Lynne serve if asked? Yes, and for the same reason and at great personal cost -- less time with her husband and family. (Given Dick's health issues, this is NOT a small issue.) She would serve if asked and she would be fantastic. I hope she's not asked. This family has already borne more than its fair share of the burden. |

Wouldn't this look like more of the same Bush-era nepotism? The whiff of favoritism is curiously strong in every major decision made within the party.

You'd almost certainly see the case go to court, where Governor Freudenthal would say that, since the GOoPers didn't perform their duty by nominating three candidates, he doesn't have to choose anyone until they do. Thus you leave the GOoPers one Senator short for months to come.
As for Lynne, even Wyoming can't stand her husband anymore. Nominating her would give the Democrats an excellent shot at an unexpected Senate seat for the next four years.
So I heartily endorse this plan of action. Sadly, you've already trashed your reputation enough that no one listens to you. |

If this is something she wants to do then I hope it happens...but only if she is willing to run in 2008. |

Lynne is a wonderful , brilliant tactician and writer. She would make a great Senator. But, the Pubs better watch out because Wy. may just be a swing state in '08 where any Bushie could go down to defeat. There are commentators who like the GOP who are saying that any connection to the Bushies will doom most pols in '08. Cheney used to be a great name in Wy. One wonders if any polls in that state have any info on a possible appointment and then on the Senate race in '08? Pubs are the Stupid Party and could just over-reach here. On the other hand, if Pubs and Ind. in the state still love her and would swamp any Dem, then this would be a great appointment. |
The WH will want his replacement to be somebody who is pro-amnesty. That needs to be resisted at all costs. Anyone the WH is for, we should be against.
Don't we have enough political cronyism in this country without appointing the VP's wife to the Senate?
Can't only deliver 1 name |
I really respect Lynn Cheney...but her husband is For the Bush/McKennedy amnesty bill, isn't he. Maybe, that has something to do with her selection. And how could she be expected to vote Against gay agenda issues?
At any rate, she would be better than Any Demorat. Can we even count on the often times gullible GOP to be aggressive enough. Logically, a Republican should be replaced with a Republiican. But when dealing with sneaky Dems, every i needs to be dotted correctly..
The GOP needs to deliver the names of three capable solid conservatives for Senator, right away... |
Lynn would be perfect. She already lives in Washington, is knowledgeable in what is going on in Washington and IMHO would not be interested in running in 08. What could be better for Wyoming? There are at least 11, most of them lawyers, the rest are ex-politicians, wanting to jump on the gravy train. Let them run for office to get elected not appointed. Craig Thomas was good for Wyoming and Lynn would carry on in the same tradition.
I received a letter from Craig today, written on May, 25th promising to vote against any amnesty bill. As a long time Wyoming resident I would rather have Lynn Cheney in that seat then any of the wannabe(s) lined up so far. This should be what’s best for Wyoming.

And while we're at it, let's reprint her lesbian romance novels and dedicate them to her new daughter-in-law.
And then she can tell the world (again) about all Dick's many deferments from Viet Nam. Don't forget: "He had better things to do!"
She'd have the lesbian cowgirl erotica demographic wrapped up. 8) |
She be a reliable conservative and give the Democrats a heck of a time, I think it's great! |
Loving see many of the same people who got their panties in a twist over Hillary Clinton having "the nerve" to actually RUN for senator, are now excited about a politician's wife, with a modest liberal arts education and no political experience, being APPOINTED to office.
I swear, if you people keep this up, Jon Stewart won't have to pay for writers! :o) |
My favorite comment so far in re Lynne's qualifications, courtesy of RodT:
"She already lives in Washington" |

Lynn Cheney would make a good senator. |
Why would anyone want to be associated with that crowd up there. They have a lower rating than the PRES. Could you reaaly want to work with DEMS who think that everyone and everything that is done in Congress is corrupt ie, even the DEMS and the REPS have a credibillity problem. What this country needs is a good enima of CONGRESS Only term limits will cure this. We the people need our country back. They are all dicussed liars and crooks. But WE THE PEOPLE ARE STUPID PER CONGRESS. Why do you think the DEMS want the government to always try and make things better. Look what it has gotten us. NADA NADA NADA. wHAT HAPPENED TO MY 100 DAY PLAN THAT MY DEM PARTY OFFERED ME??????????? |
the only reason the senate has a bad name with the american public is their reluctance to step back and kick george bush in the nuts ... one good kick and their popularity wouls sky rocket.
finally, would the cheney nomination be the female version of mrs. smith goes to washington and meets mrs smith? my god, what is the gop thinking when the best they have to offer is a middle age female writer fixated on gay heroines ... those poor christian right wing wyomians would be just outraged ... why not just appoint the lesbo daughter and be done with it. |
A good kick might work if the DEMS werent in the same boat as the PRES. (LOWER RATINGS). At least with a lesbo we wouldnt have to worry about the nuts. |
touche my friend ... a very nice response ... witty and snappy!
as we agree to disagree; lets retain some sense of humor at least! |
