An Interesting Irony
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:01 PM
The whole Obama/Clinton dynamic in this primary has been fascinating to watch.

Barack Obama is perhaps the only presidential candidate who could have wrested the nomination from the once-inevitable Senator Clinton -- who was supposed to make history by being the first female to win a major party nomination.  He's young, eloquent and an even more dramatic "first" than she would have been.

In turn, Hillary Clinton is almost the only active politician in the Democrat Party who can't be overtly bullied and pushed from the race to clear the field for Barack, now that it's obvious to just about everyone that she doesn't really have a shot at winning.  That's owing to her status as the wife of a former president.

It's remarkable to see how the "firsts" in the race have been playing out, often to the detriment of both sides.

An Interesting Irony by Carol Liebue
Hillary and Barak are at opposite ends of the race and gender spectrum, it is true. But both are Democrats--alike but different. One is more generous with taxpayer money than the other. Nothing ironic about that, it's expected. Democrats are all caught up in the irony and strange juxtaposition of their two "super candidates" who are on the verge of wreaking crippling havoc on their own party, if they haven't done so already. That, my friend, would be the irony of the election--if in a year Demos are supposed to win big the candidates' knock-down, drag-out primary fight sours the electorate against both, allowing McCain to win.

I'm sure McCain is tortured by the tempting thought of upstaging these dynamic opposites by choosing a black woman running mate. Maybe Condoleezza Rice? Then if they win the election Mac can say he gave America its first black female vice president, trumping anything the liberals could come up with.

No, McCain isn't that vain and shallow, is he? The obvious answer is yes; but the larger question is which of the two knows anything about the economy, which is shaping up as the real issue of the 2008 election?
