Torpedoing McCain

The chaos within the Democratic Party and the steady progress John McCain has made in solidifying his center-right coalition has spooked the New York Times, which sent a torpedo towards McCain this morning:
What Mr. McCain almost never mentions are two extraordinary moments in his political past that are at odds with the candidate of the present: His discussions in 2001 with Democrats about leaving the Republican Party, and his conversations in 2004 with Senator John Kerry about becoming Mr. Kerry’s running mate on the Democratic presidential ticket.
What's amusing about this is that the New York Times thinks this matters to Republicans. John McCain is the GOP nominee, so all that matters is that both the Democrats and their entire party are committed to defeat in Iraq and retreat in the broader war. How much simpler can this choice be?

I used to have (a little) respect for John McCain. But in 2004, you could see that he was so desperate to become president; he went out and touted what a great man G.W. Bush was/is. Since then he has become the GOP's "establishment" candidate.
How sad.
Now he is the cheerleader for the war(s). What have the results of the Iraq War been? 4,000 American troops dead, a wrecked Iraq, and a greatly strengthened terrorist enemy. Let's not forget how much money we've spent.
I thought conservatism was about fiscal restraint, protecting OUR borders, smaller government.
The truth is that neither Democrats nor Republicans will select the next president. Independents will. If you think that $4.00 gas prices, declining home values and more expensive food is less important than ideology, you are kidding yourselves. Any Democrat will trash McCain this fall. I wouldn't be surprised to see Congress get total control for the Dems.
Current polls are a reflection of the media being focused on the active race. McCain is getting a pass, for the most part.
Look at the ideology that got us into our current state. Honestly, can the Dems do worse? (That's a rhetorical question.) |
Change? At this point and time of history could be very dangerous. We are talking about two very different ideology. This Election, on fighting terrorism abroad, our young brave sacrificing for a just cause. Stability in Iraq and Afghanistan. With Democrats in charge we surrender all our rights to the government, they will micro-manage every aspect of our lives. Supreme Court Judges appointment are for life, we cannot afford to have a Kennedy or Hillary type appointed at the Supreme Court. |
Why won't you all stops dreaming and listens to V-Pat? Our country is going to be given away if conservatives sellout and vote for him. The only way to save it is to hand this one to those crazy muslim guys and focus on the real problems here at home.
Just vote against McCain and allow O-Bam to usher in the new. I know they are the same on the environment and the border, but we know we can't trust McCain. At least O offers hope. Maybe we can send a message to someone somewhere that we are sick of the same old half-baked conservative leaders who only uphold a couple of our principles, and only a little.
It's time to show we believe in principles more than winning - that we are serious people - willing to sacrifice one fleeting nation's glory, pride, civility, and economy to a cult leader for the sake of our beliefs.
I think the message will be clear: we don't care about conserving anything if we can't have it all, that we would rather lose it all than have the lesser evil evil is evil - if yr gonna get it, go all the way! roll in it and revel in it. Vote for anyone but McCain, or Nader!
If you had any true principles you would vote for the genuine liberal, rather than the wannabe.
If you fools knew history you'd know that if it weren't for the disastrous extremism of FDR we would never have gotten Eisenhower - without LBJ, no Nixon. Maybe Obama will move the country further toward hell, or maybe he'll move the pendulum back our way and we can then get the new Mexican Americans to help us round up and send home the future illegal immigrants and reform some of our envirnmental regulations!! That's all that matters in today's America
We'll never know unless we are willing to try and embrace change and let go. Losing might revitalize conservativism. We have nothing to lose but one unredeemable country. There will be others. Principles are forever! |

Ronald Reagan was actually a registered democrat at one time as well. That fact really helped Carter and Mondale in their campaigns. |
I'm a Reaganite, and not ecstatic about McCain, but if he's a closet Democrat, then I'll take a pro-life, pro-win the war, pro-cut the hell out of spending, pro-Roberts/Alito Democrat.
And he's not a Democrat. Just too left for me.
The third "little mentioned" fact the article should have cited was: these two stories have been repeated endlessly. BORING!! And all without persuasive citations.
Final note: Kerry is a weasel. If the story is false, he's spreading lies. And even if it were true, then Kerry is publicizing what were obviously private conversations. |
Next election, will be very crucial for the conservatives, there will be few vacancies at the high court, and since the appointment to the court is lifetime, we cannot leave it to the liberals to fill them. Through these activist judges, we will loose a lot of rights. On war on terrorism; and war in Iraq and Afghanistan, we have brave young men and woman, sacrificing their life. It will be a betrayal to their cause to leave their job unfinished. Right now, middle eastern countries believe we are weakening in our foreign policy, therefore, the price of oil is up, and this point there is an uneasiness especially in the Arab world if the Democrats win the next election. On border security, we have in the past and will be in the future have our voice heard forcefully, and will do our best. We cannot be single issue voters, conservatives, should not look at Washington to change things, We the People, are the ones who can change Washington. We get people from other sites cloaked as conservatives, or Republicans, encouraging others, on single issues, or wedge issues reminding republicans it is better to sit this election out! No, Our brave soldiers deserve better, we are not going to desert them. War on terror, is real and deadly serious. The Courts and our rights cannot be surrendered to the oppressive progressive liberal judges and lawyers. |

You're right, I don't think those other things will matter to me or you, once McCain gives the country away. Get used to a permanent Democrat majority unless you're willing to fight for your country. Amnesty is surrender. |
Virginia Patriot wrote; ------------- "McCain would be preferable as the Democrat(ick) candidate." -------------
You write retarded things like that because the issues of fighting Islamic Jihad, supporting Israel, Supreme Court nominations, and taxes & spending are not terribly important to you.
You're a one-note melody...immigration, immigration, immigration...
I don't think you'll be so focused on "immigration" when Obama's radical Supreme Court justices rule that a middle-aged Southerner such as yourself doesn't "need" a weapons arsenal in his basement. Thus, the authorities will come over to your house and pry your beloved guns right out of your cold, sweaty, clenched hands.
But then again, since you do believe in "moral equivalency," you should accept that "the right to bear arms" is just as good as "the right of the government to take those arms away."
Ha, ha, ha. |
McCain would be preferable as the Democrat(ick) candidate. Of the three, he's the least objectionable. I will not support anyone unwilling to uphold the laws, regardless of party. Amnesty is next when he says "Secure the border first". If McCain changes his mind, I'll be listening. And he needs to dump Juan Hernandez and his "Mexico First" agenda. |
Everytime the NYTs attacks McCain, it is a sign that McCain is winning. The more he wins, the more the NYTs attacks.
Paradoxically, it is a good thing. |
Romney would have been a superior candidate and president, but McCain will do less damage to the nation than Obama or Hillary. Polls show that about 20% of Hillary's voters won't vote for Obama if she loses the nomination. They show that about 20% of Obama's voters will return the favor if she pulls a Svengali with the Superdelegates. They're both so far to the left that McCain co-opts the center and will win. The bad news is that his administration's failures will get blamed on us in the future, and the mass of voters won't realize how much worse they would have been off had Obama or Hillary won the election. |

Which NYT characterization does this get filed under:
1) the commie rag characterization, or 2) the most respected newspaper in America characterization.
It's fun watching hicks with computers rail against a certain newspaper and then cite it as an authority. Sometimes in the same sentence.
Go back to shining your guns, disowning your gay relatives, and telling us how god really thinks. Leave the heavy lifting to the indoctrinated. |
... same NYT that accused McCain of having an affair? Fewer and fewer could give a flying leap on what's on the pages of all "the rumors fit to print." |
Hugh is much better at attacking John than the NYtimes. The paper would do well to take some lessons from Mr. Hewitt. |
Virginia Patriot,
You claim you're a 'conservative,' but the fact is that you have bought into 'moral equivalency'---just as the screaming lefties have on many issues.
After all, you assert that McCain would be no better than Obama on fighting Islamic Jihad, on Supreme Court nominations, on supporting Israel, or on taxes & spending.
The truth is, a John McCain Administration would be better for the USA than an Obama Administration. You know it, but your pride is too great to allow you to publicly admit it. :)
So this is the best the Times can do again. Lets see. First it was a conversation with aides about the "appearance" of an affair. Than it was McCain riding in the plane of a lobbyist ten years ago. No it is a conversation with Kerry about being vice president and a conversation with McCain and the Dems about being one in 01.
Facts: McCain did not have an affair McCain is well known for biting the hand that feeds him with lobbyists. McCain did not become a Democrat in 01 McCain did not become Kerry's running mate in 04.
Everything else is just blather. The Times has to better than than. Unfortunately unlike Jeremiah Wright, McCain does not have a gift shop where the Times can buy his worst moments for reporting.

When we have a nominee who will uphold the oath of office, the laws of this nation and American sovereignty.
John McCain is in favor of none of the above. He supports LOST, giving up sovereignty to the U.N., amnesty, giving up the rule of law, and the Gore-bull warming scam, which is nothing more than an attempt to control people under the guise of "saving the planet" from normal variations of weather. |
"Start realizing that any lib in the WH will destroy our capitalistic system and our national security."
Unfortunately that includes McCain, with his carbon taxes and amnesty for illegal aliens.
American citizens who value their citizenship have no one to vote for this election, all of the contenders intend to render their citizenship meaningless with another amnesty, which will result in the destruction of this once great nation. |
Well, first, all libs must also know that conservatives, moderates, right of center Pubs rarely care what the haters at the NYTimes write or think. Do the Dem-libs here on the forum actually think that Pubs care what Frank Rich, Krugman, Pinch think about conservPub politics? If so, I have some land in Fla. I want to sell them. The fact is many right of center Pubs are finally realizing that Ole John is it for this time around. That he is better on at least 5 issues than the liberal loons is just a fact. The down ticket Pubs must also be supported or conservs lose even more than the 30 House seats projected and 4-5 Senate seats. This nonsence that McCain will be replaced by Pubs at the Convention is inane and self-defeating. Start realizing that any lib in the WH will destroy our capitalistic system and our national security. Grow up and get real. This old man is our choice now and he is far better than the Messiah or Hildabeast. |

I see. Cotton, Neo, Seehawk, Paddy, OHM, A86, Dusty, Clarity...Remember the hate-filled little troll months ago who kept morphing into each successive 'dog' as the Site Admins would purge him? The Dogggy post at 12:52pm bearing the same squalid odor? |

Mccain is a super hawk who's open border fetish is obvious. He is also an old man. The big o and cankles are doves with a similar open border stance. It matters little who limps into the white house . The action is in the halls of the people , the house and senate. This election will go along way toward ending the need for a big daddy prez. These choices are the worst yet. Flip a coin because it's the same ol same ol. |
The war in Iraq is important for our foreign policy, as an integral part of the larger war against radical Islam. The sacrifices made should be honored.
It's importance pales in comparison with losing our country. Every day thousands of unknown foreign nationals pour across our borders. Illegal aliens are marching in our streets. No one will enforce the laws. McCain considers surrender(amnesty) the only option. If We The People allow Congress to give away our country, what will all the generations before us have sacrificed so much for?
What's amusing about this is that the New York Times thinks this matters to Republicans.
This stuff really does matter. Backstabbing McCain killed the Republican momentum following the 2004 election victories. His betrayal on issue after issue led to the losses of Republican majorities in the House and Senate.
I'm a Hegelian Conservative.
http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/02/last_nominee_standin g.html
Win or lose, the penduluum has swung so far to the left (the majority of Amerians are unwilling to support our all volunteer armed forces in a time of war), that politics no longer matters.
Republican victories in 2000 and 2004 only masked a deeply petulant America. 25 year old "children" throwing blood during an Easter Sunday service? Who protests the protests?
McCain must lose or the fever will not break. |
McCain hasn't made any progress. Just yesterday he was bashing that conservative in Illinois for wanting to secure the border and not wanting enough amnesty. Now He's talking about how he wanted to become a Democrat in 2000 and run with Kerry in 2004.
He needs to drop out of the race and let a conservative have nomination. |
buying the NYT? That would one very tasty cold entree. |
I agree with the NYT. My problem are the alternatives: Obama or Hillary. Ugh! I really hate this election and frankly losing interst fast. |
on the left understand they are going down hard in a general election that should have been a cake walk for them?
I shake my head in disbelief how incompetent Democratic voters are....
in the Morning! "It smells like...Victory."
Meanwhile, give us another week similar to the last one at Demoland. It was such a grand movie. We are quivering for a Sequel. |
My hunch is that the NYT is feeling the heat from Rupert Murdock breathing down their neck and worrying that the unthinkable could happen, Newscorp buying the NYT. The Times may curtail its dirty tricks this election as editors and writers alike fear scrutiny of their careers.
