'Did We Quit When the Germans Bombed Pearl Harbor?'
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 9:19 PM
There are many, many things to say about Sarah Palin's announcement today, but one point has not really been made, and that is that quitting is not a conservative value.

Conservatives generally admire people who stick it out -- especially when the going gets tough.  Today's announcement was a lot of things.  It was erratic and weird, to be sure -- but it was also unconservative...

If Sarah Palin has some personal or family issues which preclude her finishing her term, I certainly respect her decision to step down.  But if she thinks quitting the job she was hired to do is somehow a wise political strategy for earning a promotion -- she's just plain wrong ..

I missed all the Palin fun, being away for the long weekend, but this is one of the funniest things I've ever seen at Town Hall:

"First a tid bit of history, the "Germans" did not bomb Pearl Harbor, the Japanese did."

Gotta get up pretty early in the morning to get ahead of Alan.

"Don't kid yourself. Sarah knows what she is worth and she is no quitter.

You pick out the sentences you want and ignore her meaning.

1. As Governor recently she has been unable to do what she feels is best for Alaska, because she has had to spend all her time defending herself against idiots. It is, was, very expensive both for her and the state.

2. She felt she was not doing the job she was elected for because of these idiots.

3. It costs the idiot nothing to try to destroy her and to distract her."

Me- Pat, all that means is that she can't compartmentalize and multi-task, which means she certainly isn't ready for the Presidency.

Ronald Reagan's Administration had to endure SEVEN Special Prosecutors, including Lawrence Walsh's interminal Iran-Contra investigation which came up short.

George H. Bush had to put up with four of them, including silly conspiracy theories that he had flow to France to meet with the crazy Ayatollahs in 1980.

Bill Clinton had to deal with eight Special prosecutors, including Ken Starr's panty-sniffing investigations.

Let's not forget, George W. Bush had to deal with the Plame nonsense, the Gonzalez Nonsense, etc.

So if Sarah couldn't handle Alaska, she certainly couldn't handle the Presidency, where the smashmouth is played on a more professional level.

Judge Tom w. Brothers and a Partner in Karl Dean's favorite FIRM, Bass Berry & Sims, were INDICTED once and Tom w. Brothers and Bass Berry and Sims will be INDICTED again and CONVICTED this time.

When Nashville Judge Tom w. Brothers was first INDICTED for Drug Money Laundering Karl Dean was the Public Defender FIXING Cases his Wife's FIRM, Bass, Berry & Sims.

According to an old Law School friend of mine who was working for the DEA when Tom Brothers was INDICTED for DRUG MONEY Laundering, Bass, Berry & Sims was the biggest Drug Money Laundering FIRM in the Southeast.

My DEA Agent Friend's words were similar to what Phil Williams of http://www.NewsChannel5.com wrote about Russell Brothers. According to Phil Williams, Russell Brothers was a "Giant among Giants" in the Drug Smuggling Business.

Somehow the Deans accumulated a "reported" Fortune of $100 Million despite the fact that they both grew up poor. The cover story spun by the Deans is that Ms. Dean's STINGY MISER Uncle gave her the money.

Coincidentally, the Deans' cover story was similar to Tom Brothers' cover story about where the money that he was LAUNDERING for his Convicted FELON Uncle Russell's Drug Money came from.

Tom Brothers testified at his trial that he thought, "Uncle Russell got the millions from selling insurance for CNA."

2. She felt she was not doing the job she was elected for because of these idiots.

3. It costs the idiot nothing to try to destroy her and to distract her.

SO she thought she could fight in better ways by resigning the governorship, letting the Lt. Gov run it in peace.

She said she will continue to fight for anyone whom she believes in.

My own thoughts:
It will be good for her to take some time to be with her besieged family, to write a book that will help restore her family's fortunes - ruined by jealous scum.

By campaigning for others she will have a chance to hone her impressive skills and when she feels it right, run for office. I certainly believe she will and will trounce all the bums in congress.

You know, I really do find these people hard to believe...

Before last week, I thought Sanford might be a good pick for the GOP making a return to sanity. Until he got caught with his South American "Soul-Mate" and confessing his every affair. See yah, wouldn't want to be ya!

Yet after weeks of nuttiness with Palin, from getting into an argument with Letterman about which daughter A-Rod knocked up, to all the McCain staffers telling tales on her to Vanity Fair, to this grotesque fiasco yesterday... that any of these guys think she has a future?

Okay, given that their alternatives were Huckabee and Romney, I can see their desperation.

First of all Hillary never hit a brick wall of oppostion in the performance of her duty....because she never had any duties. A completely blank resume. We would have never heard of Hillary Clinton had she not been married to Bill Clinton.

She would have been just another law student who couldn't pass the bar.

I guess you could say Hillary is an ambitious pit bull though. She hung on to her man for dear life thru thick and thin during all the accusations of rape, abuse, lies and just plain embarrassing humiliations.

Of course, all she had to do was hang on. Never actually had to accomplish anything. Just be married to BC and give speeches.

It's amusing to me how...
...conservative pundits and commenters are tripping over themselves to agree that resigning a governorship halfway through one's first term is an entirely reasonable and prudent thing to do. Clever, even.

Well, it's not. It is actually quite a BIZARRE and ERRATIC thing to do, especially when it's accompanied by a mangled, incoherent speech at a hastily assembled press conference (at which no questions could be asked) on the Friday of a 3-day weekend. If any liberal Democrat pulled this stunt, all the same commenters and pundits would be tripping over themselves to agree on what obvious whackjobs they were.

Also: If Sarah Palin is quitting due to the intense scrutiny, doesn't that put the lie to her "pit bull hockey mom" persona? Say what you like about Hillary, but every attack on her or her family only made her more determined. Oh, Barracuda Sarah... we hardly knew ye.

Finally: what is this with Palin being a lame duck? Doesn't the lame duck period fall between Election Day and the end of one's term? This is an honest question. Is it some odd quirk of Alaska state government that their governors are lame ducks for the second halves of their terms?

Sitting out the rest of her term would be a waste of time at this stage. She is needed to speak and represent Americans who want this country to remain free from government control of everything. She speaks for the majority of Americans and does it very well I might add, without a teleprompter and a speech writer's creation. She speaks from her heart. I don't think most Americans mind her form of rhetoric, just the supposedly--bright, intelligent elite that thinks everyone without their Ivy-league education is "stupid". How about this one. "You want to know the reason Chelsea Clinton is so Ugly? Janet Reno is her father!"

And you know who said that? John McCain. Now I may have missed it, but when did Biden or Obama say anything that "vile" about Palin's family. Go ahead, we'll wait.

Or when Rush Limbaugh put up Chelsea's picture as the "White House Dog"...

Then you have things like this...

"A huge family night for the Bush family. This morning the Bush twins woke up in Lincoln's lap." --David Letterman

"Security is a big issue this year. So the Secret Service announced that people attending President Bush's inaugural ceremony will not be allowed to bring coolers or alcoholic beverages. In other words, the Bush twins will not be going." --Conan O'Brien

"They say that the security arrangements for the up coming presidential inauguration will be the most extensive in history. And that's just to keep the Bush twins away from the champagne." --Craig Ferguson

So, uh, yeah, if you run for office, people are going to make jokes about your kids. Deal with it. Or bail out....

Sometimes a duck is just a duck. Why not take Palin at her word? All the caca that continues to come her way will never stop and just keeps her from doing her job as governor. Plus costs the taxpayers money. Why not let the competitent lieutenant governor do it?

I have nothing but contempt for BHO, Hillary, McCain, Kerry et al who run for office for literally years while still in office drawing a pay check and not serving their constituants. A very dishonorable practice.

Yup, Palin was guv while running for VP, but that was just a matter of weeks.

Palin talked about hitting her head against the brick wall. That's what it was going to amount to as she was being quadruple-teamed.

This move may preclude a run for POTUS as the quitter label will hurt. But staying in as governor wasn't going to help either. Her enemies are relentless.

This move passes the ball to someone with a chance of scoring, gives her family a break and gives her the opportunity to persue more effective avenues while not on the taxpayers' dime.

The more you think about, the more sense it makes. And the more honorable it seems to be.

CHARACTER. PRINCIPLES. COURAGE.
Sarah Palin, a competent and principled governor, has been hounded daily by the Left. She is continually sued, harassed, maligned and slandered. Her children are fodder for obscene jokes.
If she stays in politics, they will continue to ruthlessly and ceaselessly attack her family, especially her CHILDREN, since they can't attack her policies and issues because the people of Alaska (and many outside AK) APPROVE of her policies and stand with her on the issues.
She will have to continue spending money and time fighting frivolous lawsuits over cases that have already been settled, instead of focusing on governing.
Stepping down, she takes the attention of the left AWAY from the Alaska governership, giving it to someone the left DOESN'T froth over, so business in Alaska can get done. In other words, she does not value power above everything else, and shows she truly cares about the people of Alaska, AND her own family, more than power.
A perfect conservative. A perfect alternative to the cockroaches in Washington DC we always have to choose between.
Let people on the left (and right!) say "she's a quitter". Should she stay, it could be said that she willfully and selfishly subjects her resources, her consituents and her family to the harsh scrutiny and abuse of her enemies' ire.
What matters is that she has, in stepping aside, shown CHARACTER, PRINCIPLE and COURAGE.
I know the left does not cherish these traits, but those on the right and the moderates would do well to consider the larger messages of her actions, and think twice about what the pundits want when they try to tell us her political career is now over.
It's not for THEM to decide.
You only "waste" your vote when you vote against someone else instead of FOR someone.
In 2012, those of us who care about INDIVIDUAL LIBERTIES and FREEDOMS need to stand up and vote FOR someone.
Sarah Palin would not be a wasted vote.

My memory is a bit fuzzy--did your hero, His Highness Obama finish his full Senate term during his run for the presidency? The stuff you pathological idiots come up with is truly pathetic.

Me- First. Obama's not my hero. Didn't vote for him in 2008, probably won't vote for him in 2012. I just don't suffer from "Obama Derangement Syndrome" like most of you guys do.

But the point is, Obama didn't quit his Senate post years before an election and said "Well this job is too stressful, but I'm going to run for an even more stressful one!"

Obviously, the fact he won IL pretty overwealming in the primary says the people of my state were pretty down with him getting that promotion. I wasn't.

Romney yes, Huckabee no.

Me- Actually, I can see where Huckabee has a future.

Let's work on several premises-

First, Obama's attempts to save Corporate America from itself fail miserably and the economy doesn't recover.

Two, most people get pretty sick of the Republican conventional message is that we aren't letting big business screw us over enough!

Obama won because a lot of people put their checkbooks in front of their bibles and voted out the people who are screwing them.

A religous populist, especially one who thinks letting China have all our jobs, could probably do pretty well. Heck, I hate the religious right with a passion normally reserved for telemarketers or street mimes, and even I could see a scenario where I could vote for Huck. He's just likable.

Explicitly citing the movie "Animal House" when quoting the famous Belushi line would insult the reader by suggesting that the reader was too culturally illiterate to get the joke. I see that some of you are anyway. Thanks for sharing.

The line isn't about Pearl Harbor: it's about quitting, or rather, about the importance of not quitting.

I have been a Palin-defender, though I have not been a Palin-enthusiast, and with this pointless gesture on the governor's part, I now know that I shall never again be called upon to be the latter. Better to know that now than later.

If you read the Jonah Goldberg article that preceded her surprise announcement, and if you saw my posted comment thereunder, you would know that he and I were willing to be patient. She, on the other hand, was not, and no matter what else should follow, she will never live this down.

Good luck in your private sector pursuits, Mrs. Palin. Vaya con Dios, and adieu.

Matt is right...
... and you guys are crazy if you think Palin's move today does anything to help her chances in 2012, should she decide to run.

There are legitimate reasons to leave office in the middle of your term -- to take a higher office, say, or because of personal problems that prevent you from doing the job (health problems and suchlike). But not to co-write a lucrative memoir, or to hobnob in the Lower 48, or because the scrutiny has gotten too tough, or to prepare for an election that is more than 3 years away. Alaskans elected her to serve as governor for four years, not for however long the job held her interest.

If she's interested in the presidency, she could have finished her term in late 2010, which would have given her more than a year before the primaries started in 2012. I never thought Palin had a chance to be elected president, but I thought she might have a shot at the GOP nomination. Not anymore. Her primary opponents will hammer her with, "Why should you be elected president when you couldn't finish your term as governor?" and "If you couldn't handle the pressure as governor of Alaska, how are you going to handle the pressure in the White House?"

This whole thing stinks. I think we're in for some big surprises as details emerge in the coming weeks.

Careful with the Axe
My memory is a bit fuzzy--did your hero, His Highness Obama finish his full Senate term during his run for the presidency? The stuff you pathological idiots come up with is truly pathetic.

And speaking of pathetic, your article here Matt Lewis is a bit short of perspective. If she never seeks any higher form of political office, then yes, she quit. But I think we should give her just a bit more than 8 hours to determine that, don't you think? The reality is during this age, political fund-raising is more time consuming, more important than it ever has been. One of my mottos in life is to think twice and act once. I wish you'd have applied the same standard to your blog post here. You sound like just another vacuous, reactionary, emoting liberal.

Matt Lewis - FULL of S___
FYI, Mr. Lewis, Palin makes a great point. So many of those running for higher office elect to hang onto their day job even though they aren't doing it.

Anywhere else but in politics, that is called theft. Kerry, Clinton and even that Obuttfuk jerk looked ridiculous pretending to be functioning senators while campaigning. Even McCain had gotten so out of touch that when he responded to Bush's bailout, it turned out to be the move that sunk his candidacy.

2nd, she is right - the left fears her and have plenty of stolen treasury money to do nothing but snipe at everything she does as governor. So far, she has a great record and set the state on a solid course of economic independence. Her approval is overwhelming there.

Palin could do a lot of good work bucking up the morale of the nation in the face of this fascist DC onslaught, generate support for a GOP resurgence in 2010 and create a lot of support for a POTUS run in 2012.

There's been a tremendous political vacuum that none of the career republicans have the guts to step into. (Boehner made a great bid last Friday on the day of the Tax and Confiscate vote) Sarah sees an opportunity to step into the breach and she's going to reap the political benefits.

This isn't about finishing a job - it's about taking on a more important job that desperately needs doing.

MR. Lewis, I would advise you: don't go into the field of political consulting - the GOP's already glutted with you moderate, big tent, 'let's be more like they are' LOSERS, that produce Crists, Romneys and McCains.

The really funny thing is that you and Caeden so easily assumed that Matt Lewis, one of the major and more prolific writers on Townhall, wouldn't know that it was the Japanese, not the Germans, who bombed Pearl Harbor. You are not qualifed...
...to be commenting on politics. One thing I have noticed is that ALL you political pundits think the same. I've watched this speech and listen to her spokesman and from all indications, she still wants to be involved in national politics. Remember, the talking heads said Obama was done after the Rev. Wright and Ayers stuff. The people ignored it and voted him in office anyways. This is not politics as usual and she seems to be taking a risk by thinking outside the box. If it doesn't work, so be it. Why are so many people so concerned anyways? The same ones who probably won't support her in a Republican Primary.

Yes, this was a shocker; but is there a political rule that says you must complete all the years of your political office before you decide to move on to something else? If so, Obama, Huntsman, Crist, Dodd, Biden, Clinton, Richardson, etc all seeked a higher office before completing out their elected terms and they ALL did it for political reasons. This is no different. Who knows what the Gov wants to do.

Sorry, I look at her resignation today and have to ask, why would I want to elect her president if she can't even keep her commitment to the people of Alaska?

She ran for an office until 2011. She has an obligation to fulfill that office. If she finds it too "stressful", what's life going to be like when She's president, and every comedian, blogger, pundit and idiot on the street is ripping on her...

Matt as usual....
Matt I knew before you even created this post that you were going to slam Sarah Palin, as you have repeatedly done in the past. First a tid bit of history, the "Germans" did not bomb Pearl Harbor, the Japanese did.

Matt if you had actually listened to her speech you would have heard her state multiple times that she is going to take the fight in a new direction. She is still obviously eyeing national politics and being the Governor of Alaska is more of a hinderance to laying the support that she will need to take out the Obama Machine in 2012. To do this takes time, political allies, and money. The Democrats in Alaska on Obama's orders I believe, were killing her financially with frivilous ethics charges. She could not build a national platform because anytime she leaves the state or does an interview a Democrat files an ethics charge against her which costs her money that could be spent in a 2012 run. I believe that she is going to run in 2012, I think we are going to see more of her in the media and not less, and I think she is going to take the leadership role in opposing Obama in the press. Sarah Palin has never played by established political rules, she plays by her own rules and it has served her well thus far. Matt you should know better.
Lady Liberty writes: Friday, July, 03, 2009 10:01 PM
Flow on, sweet Afton
I didn't find her fond farewell "weird" or "erratic". No doubt the Dems found it erotic, but they find everything erotic because they are steeped in psyche and lost to eros.

She probably could've wrapped in up, however, in 10 punched-up minutes. Sompin' to work on.

Anyway, shouldn't conservatives have had good prior guesses as to each of the points in Sarah's talk? No wonder the degradation by the left continues unabated.

But to the main point, Sarah provided everything you need to know as to why she is leaving now. It's a testament to spaghetti-spined politics that the lawyerly opposition was permitted to cast the whistle blower from office, running up a stiff bill for Alaska in the process. Can you say, "tort reform" and "frivolous law suits"?

Quitting? What? Playing legaldefense? Was that part of her job description?

If quitting, then starting what? I sense that Sarah has figured that out. Alaska will survive (Hi, Putin, how's it goin'?) what with all that oil flowing...Flow on, sweet Afton. We'll take a lesson where we can from you.
