What's Next for McCain ...

One of John McCain's favorite humorous quotes comes from Chairman Mao, who said: "It's always darkest just before it's pitch-black."
But for John McCain, who is now the front-runner, it was truly darkest before the light. It wasn't all that long ago that he was written-off as joke. No more.
He has proven he can win a closed Primary where only Republicans are allowed to vote. What is more, Florida is obviously a very big and diverse state -- so tonight's victory cannot in any way be diminished.
My guess is that tonight's victory for McCain will lead to two opposite results ...
1. Many conservatives who have hesitated to support McCain will now (all of a sudden) decide to endorse him. Some big-money Republicans who have been hedging their bets will now start writing checks to McCain. This is vitally important for McCain.
2. Many conservatives who have long-hated McCain will actually increase their attacks on him. Look for outside groups to begin running anti-McCain ads. Look for many prominent talk show hosts to put on the full-court press and promise that McCain's election will lead to Armageddon, or something ...
Ultimately, it is now up to John McCain to find a way to extend an olive branch to movement conservatives who, over the years, have had legitimate reasons to be suspicious of him.

Mitt is the only true conservative... he's the man. His optimistic goals for our country's future is a breath of fresh air! His economic plan is outstanding & he will fight the Jihadists! He's the complete package!
Advesories cut him down for petty reasons ie...his Mormon faith, good looks, $.
There are real reasons to go against McCain...McCain (FOOT SOLDIER for Reagan...HAHAHA) cannot win on HIS record. He's the most LIBERAL Republican on the ballot...(he has aligned himself with too many liberal issues ie...Gang of 14, remember McCain/Feingold?, defected with Ted Kennedy on education, plus disapproved of Bush's tax cuts, & weak on immigration.)
He's too bombastic to be President. He SUCKER PUNCHED Romney yesterday w/ his DECEITFUL accusations about timelines & robo- calling...he's a lib all the way, even running a Clintonesque campaign.
The FOOT SOLDIER'S jealousy of Romney is crystal clear. Is it because Romney's a Mormon or is it because Romney's been successful, maybe because Romney's exposed his failures & makes him accountable, or a combo of all??
EVERYONE who CORRELATES MITT & $ IS 100% JEALOUS! True conservative Republicans consider the candidates record & goals for our country's future...not petty issues like good looks & $...One should not take anyone w/ these views seriously, but should realize that those w/ these views are lacking a few brain cells!
McCain is an UNTRUSTWORTHY UNRELIABLE "FOOT SOLDIER" REPUBLICAN TRAITOR who would disappoint Ronald Reagan with his liberal record and liberal goals for our country. He's a pseudo-Republican...as the old saying goes "a wolf hiding in sheeps clothing"...McCain's "a liberal hiding in the conservative party" |

I still hope the old liar croaks before the convention. |

Fla is not the world and true conservatives will not accept McCain. So, the RNC had better take note- find another candidate who has demonstrated his core beliefs to be such that we can live with him. It may be Romney or some other, but if the "party" wants defeat, just try forcing McCain on us! Romney has the funds to continue and there may yet be a real conservative out there who will rise by convention-time. Whatever the question is- McCain is NOT the answer. |
|
Independents were allowed to vote by changing party affiliation immediately before they voted (since Gov. Crist authorized this.)
Mother_of_4, I agree with you wholeheartedly. It has made me ill that Florida voters could be so gullible as to not see McCain for the person he is (or be in denial anyway.) There is still Feb. 5 to come and I believe that Romney is not counted out based on a state that may or may NOT have truly had a closed primary. Like others who have posted I am a conservative first and Republican second. The GOP disgusts me...why don't they just rename themselves Republicans Who Are Really Democrats? They will not see a dime of my money until this stops. |

All of you McCain supporters may want to step back and take a long look at who is supporting him: two key Florida politicians, Governor Charlie Crist and Senator Mel Martinez, endorsed McCain this week and likely swung the election his way. Both of these "men" campaigned as staunch conservatives to win election and then switched to moderate positions afterwards (Martinez espoused endless border-security rhetoric, and then supported the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill, and Crist has become an embarassment with his global-warming zealotry), which tells you much about Mr. McCain if these types are supporting him. Both of these guys can forget about receiving my vote the next time around. |

That I'm not alone in putting philosophy (Conservativism) above party (GOP). I'm afraid the whole "lesser of two evils" thing won't work this time. |
|
The McCain win is surely to give him a boost. I too am sick about the results.
Romney is a conservative that is not a "Washington Insider". I think the conservative base needs to get their minds around this and realize that the people of America will not be able to go on with "business as usual".
CNN is talking about this being "very tough for Romney". Why? He only lost by a about 84,000 votes at this point. He has a lot of strength behind him and Super Tuesday states need to "pull their head out" and vote for someone who can bring forward a new vision for our party and not the same "old" same "old".....sorry McCain that's not a cheap shot.

know why Hugh is kneeling behind his car and clutching the exhuast pipe near his mouth? |

Thank god Romney lost. He stands for nothing except himself. |

Back in 2000 I changed my reg from dem to republican just to vote for McCain... I don't care if he's against abortion, etc... he's a true american hero. |
|
can take his "olive branch" and shove it where the sun doesn't shine,...I'll never vote for him. I'll do a "write in" if he wins the nomination,.....I can't wait to see all the RINOs licking their wounds in Nov. when Hitlery beats his *ss!
I'm not surprised at McCains' winning Fla.,.....Look at all the "ethno-Latino", open borders crowd, and Martinez, who supported him.
The next "act" in this circus will be when Rudy quits and endorses McShamnesty,.....ooooh how perfect for the OPEN BORDERS crowd to win their ultimate goal in Nov....I can see it now.
We shall see,...it ain't over till it's over, and the "fat lady" sings. |

I guess we get the government we deserve. I'm deeply disappointed in so-called Republicans in Florida. Clearly, 7 years of Bush rule have made people forget what the core conservative principles are. Even if McCain wins, Republicans lose. There will be no Republican on the ballot.
I am sick to my stomach watching tonight's results. Mitt Romney is everything the Republican Party could want in a candidate. I believe his failure to capture the nomination is evidence that bigotry remains a strong force in this country. |
|
|
I think that Republicans who are not conservative, like Matt Lewis, fail to understand that we are conservatives first, and republicans second. It doesn't do us any good to elect Republicans who are not conservative and will not advance a conservative agenda, and who will in fact advance a liberal agenda. Getting a Republican majority isn't the point, it's getting a conservative Republican majority. Otherwise, it's a waste of time and effort. If McCain is nominated, it will make little difference for America who wins the election, but it will hurt the Republican Party if McCain wins and then governs as a Democrat. Better to have a Democrat in office governing as a Democrat. I'm leaning toward staying home if McCain gets nominated as well, but I still have hope that we can nominate someone that will advance the conservative agenda. |

that can bridge a gap as wide as John McCain has opened.
Every person who believes in fudamental conservatism has been denigrated by this fossil like Senator. He's never passed up a chance to insult a Conservative idea to the Press who he adores.
Now he's going to say what?
Sorry?
I didn't mean it?
I really didn't want to do that Immigration Bill? I really didn't vote against tax cuts and call them tax cuts for the rich? I'm really against any global warming legislation?
Maybe he can hire Rodney King as a consultant and ask if we all can't just get along.
It's sad. Despite the media conjecture, both Hillary and Barack are weak candidates. We've searched high and low, and found the one guy they can beat. Hopefully they will. |

Which olive branch could McCain possibly extend to generate interest from the conservative base? He has consistently exhibited his true colors (see McCain-Feingold, the Gang of 14, McCain-Kennedy as exhibits A,B and C) which are those of a moderate-leftist at best, and a liberal at worst. If the modern GOP wants this guy, than you folks can sink with him and his watered-down liberalism, which is neither conservative nor Reaganesque. It is disappointing and nauseating in the extreme that such a candidate, so weak on national security, economics and the Constitution, is being supported by any significant percentage of this party; any "olive branch" would be as phony as his victory speech this evening. |
|
I wonder if there is a third party that will be worth voting in the Presidential election? I have never seriously looked at them because there were always reasonable GOP nominees in the past.
Perhaps I'll just write Fred Thompson in anyway. |
|
|
I thought I would be sitting at home at election time if Giuliani got the GOP nomination. Now I've decided to go out and vote if McCain gets the nomination. Unfortunately for the GOP I'll be voting for WHOEVER the Democratic candidate turns out to be. I'll NEVER vote for JUAN McCain. |
|
|
What olive branch could ever be big enough to entice conservatives to elevate a lying, backstabbing, walk-across-the-aisle-to-give-the-dems-whatever-they-want, liberal? |
|
|
I'll not vote for McCain either. He is simply a liberal. A hawk liberal yes, but a liberal nonetheless. I won't sit home in November, but no liberal will receive my vote. |
|
I will sit home in Nov if McCain gets it. He is no conservative and has stabbed us in the back more times than we can count with that smug look on his face that makes me want to knock his teeth out.
It will be a cold day before I vote for McCain. If they think turnout in 2006 for the GOP was bad, they have not seen nothing yet.
