SOTU Recap
Posted by: Dean Barnett at 10:06 AM

As everyone knew from yesterday’s FAQ, I wasn’t exactly expecting greatness from the President last night. So last night’s speech came as an extremely pleasant surprise. While I’m not sure I’d go so far as to call it a homerun, it was certainly a base hit. Below, some scattered thoughts on the festivities:

1) FINALLY – The President finally used the words “radical” and “Islam” in the same sentence. He also did a decent job of putting the Iraq war in context. The battle against Radical Islam is actually a complex topic. Even our brilliant solons often wear the dunce cap on the matter, not knowing basic stuff like whether Al Qaeda is a Sunni or Shiite group.

So I really liked the fact that the President gave a little crash course on the wider conflict last night. I also really liked the fact that there was at least a bipartisan show of approval for the notion that Iran can’t be allowed to get nuclear weapons. It was the President’s most intellectually honest address on the war since the one he gave a few days after 9/11. Let’s give the man his due.

2) THE NIGHT OF THE BLINKING PELOSI? – I’ve gotten a lot of emails on how much Pelosi blinked last night. Regrettably, at Southern Soxblog Manor, we are living in the dark ages and I am forced to watch TV on low-def and without widescreen. On my TV, I couldn’t see Pelosi’s eyes so I have no idea what all the fuss is about. It sounds like I really missed something, though.

3) THE DOMESTIC AGENDA – Maybe it reflects my evolution or devolution into a single issue voter (the single issue being the war), but the stuff on domestic policy bored me to tears. I’m also aware that even if I rediscover my fire for domestic policy initiatives, nothing good will happen with a Democratic congress, especially this Democratic congress which is relentlessly hostile to all things Bush.

4) THE LONG WALK HOME – The second best part of the night for Bush was the extended coverage of his walking down the aisle after the address. He’s so good with people. I know you could say it was just respect for the office that made Democratic lawmakers clamor to get him to sign their printed copies of the speech, but I think that sails wide of the mark. Somehow I don’t think Cindy Sheehan would have used the close access to the president to seek his John Hancock.

On a related note, why don’t we get to see that Bush more? Can’t the great brains in the White House figure out some way to get that guy before the public more often?

5) HEROES AMONG US – The salute to people in the gallery was started by Ronald Reagan. A couple of weeks before Reagan’s 1982 SOTU, a government employee named Lenny Skutnick dove into the frozen Potomac to save a woman who had been on an airliner that had crashed. Reagan’s people put Skutnick in the gallery and Reagan saluted his bravery during the speech. The Gipper did it first, and he did it best. No one knew it was coming, and Skuttnick really did embody “the spirit of American heroism” as Reagan put it.

The tradition has since devolved to the point where the creator of Baby Einsteins, whatever that is, can now get the Skuttnick treatment if she plays her cards right. But credit where it’s due: That guy who saved the guy in the New York subway – there’s a hero. You’d have to be made of stone to not appreciate what he did, and the President's tribute to him.

6) THE MUPPET RETORTS – J-Pod said that Jim Webb looked like a Muppet giving the rebuttal. I don’t really agree. I thought he just looked like a 60 year old guy doing something really weird with his alleged hair to try to look young. But I still thought his speech wreaked.

It was petty. The whole “you should have listened to me” talking point is immature. If the Democrats are going to spend the next two years saying “Nyah, Nyah, Nyah” they’ll see their electoral good fortune crumble. Fast.

For some reason, the guys on TV seemed to adore Webb’s rebuttal. At around midnight, Andrew Sullivan was on MSNBC clucking out some inanity about Webb’s testosterone. I don’t get it. I don’t think America will either. People don’t like “I told you so’s”, even if they’re skillfully delivered. Which this one wasn’t.

Right On tracycoyle
I feel so much better now that I can officially say "I'm not a Republican". I've held my nose and voted for the party for so long but no more. Now I will vote for those whose postions and actions are worthy of my vote.

I left last year. I know bankruptcy reform gets a lot of support from conservatives espousing personal responsibility but what happens when someone is irresponsible (of just plain stupid) and ends up with enough debt to choke a horse? Debtor's prison? The Republicans have become a special interest group for corporate interests. I do not mean that in the same sense that the looney left states it, but what is good for GM is NOT necessarily good for America anymore, as Toyota is teaching many former union workers.

Immigration helps this country in dozens of ways and as the first born of immigrants, I STRONGLY support immigration. The pandering...no, the selling out of America to ILLEGAL immigrants is as bad as selling out the troops. I don't understand why Bush and the Republicans can't see that.

How many people that complained about people like me in November (that refused to vote Republican because of their behavior despite disliking everything about the Democrats) are watching in abject horror at Republicans defecting on the GWOT, taxes, minimum wage, immigration?

The political class...oh wait, there is not supposed to be a political class....needs to be sent packing and if the current behavior doesn't encourage more of the base to leave Republican politicians flapping in the wind, then we have truly lost the base.

Speech, Baby Einsteins, Heroes, and Webb
I liked the speech and I thought President Bush did a good job on it. Some flaws on social policy (I like a tax deduction for uninsured Americans--but I am not at all into having my health plan being deemed "gross income."). On style and delivery I would give the President an A-. On substance I would grade it a B.

Now let me nitpick:

Baby Einstein tapes will turn normal healthy kids into mentally retarded ADD freaks. Ok, I cannot prove that, but anyone promoting having infants watch more TV to make them "smarter" is selling something potentially more harmful than Scientology. Ugh. I hated that as much as Dinesh D'Souza's argument that we are being too liberal and incurring the wrath of moderate Islam.

But I agree 100% on your comments on the Subway Hero. The President should have had him and the Silver Star medal winner and called it a day on "Heroes." I was almost ready for the cast of Heroes (the TV show) to come out and parade around the House Chamber.

I thought Webb did ok (other than combing his hair), but he is wrong on his facts. We did not run away from Korea and still have troops there fifty years later.

Webb rebuttal
I did not hear Webb mention that his Dear Dad would not have been a Berlin hero had the Dem. congress back then ordered Truman out of Berlin. Nor did I hear him say we still have troops in Korea 50+ years later at a cost of Billions. Webb may have been a hero once but is a loser now.

Steve of the Union

While the prez delivered the State of the Union, I note that Steve Nash, of the Phoenix Suns, was also making statements during his "Steve of the Union" in Washington, D.C., beatin' the livin' hell outta the uppity Wizards.

Too Many Pelosi Lip, Jaw Movements

Pelosi also was moving her lips and jaw around a lot. It was creepin' me out.

I'm done
Last night I heard:

We simply will not fight the war (in Iraq or the GWOT)to win. We simply do not have to will to do what it will take.

The Illegal Alien Invasion continues.

Our taxes are going up.

We'll hobble ourselves over "global warming" so the Chinese can take over the world that much faster.

Add to this:

Weak Senate Republicans
Lack of action on conservative judges
The party's general neglect and backhanding of social conservatives

With all this I must come to the conclusion that the Republican Party doesn't stand for much of anything I stand for.

I've been a registered Republican for nearly 30 years but I'm done with these people and I am changing my voter registration to "independent" at lunch today.

Love you, but it's "reeked." Unless it was a pun on "wreaked havoc" - which would be both on point and clever.

The dawning of the High Definition TV age will be as unkind to certain politicians as Black & White televised debates were to a makeup-less Richard Nixon.

Comedy may not be pretty; jowls, wrinkles and facial tics on folks like grandma Pelosi won't be either.

Bush Domestic Agenda
Dean, I know you tuned out on the Domestic Agenda portion of the speech. Here I'll give you a recap.

#1 George Bush and the GOP want to make sure illegal aliens (who fill our emergency rooms, suck up social services, and kill American citizens) stay in the United States of America.

#2 In 2007 George Bush and the GOP are now interested in balancing the federal budget after the GOP and President Bush (2001-2006) pushed through the most liberal, left wing social programs in the history of the world.

There you go. Conservatives are now flocking back to the GOP after hearing this agenda.

YOUR "LONG WALK HOME" SECTION
You think maybe the Dems wanted those signatures so they could pass 'em on to Henry Waxman, as evidence in a perjury trial? Hmmmm..!

On Webb
Hey Dean,
Perhaps the affection and clucking for Webb is because he is something that most politicians are not, frank. Webb went out of his way to be nasty to President Bush, solidifying his bonafides with the nutroots. And the press above all loves the frankness. The juicy sound bite. The great quote. And man, oh man, they know the way into a politicians heart, to gain his confidence and be part of the cadre to get the gets. You gotta publicly suck up. Not the Eddie Haskell, "Gosh, Mr. Webb, that speech was darn terrific." No it needs the "Oh gosh, Brit, what a brilliant rebuttal by Webb." Andrew just might be in love, but the rest of the press corps is securing access. Access to a prominent Senator who is going to be entertaining and provide quotes for the next six years. And for the Inside the Beltway crowd, a local guy too, so he's available when Congress is out of town. Who could ask for anything more!
