Dave Barry with FIRE on Free Speech in Colleges
Posted by: Kevin Glass at 2:40 PM
A big part of my growing up was reading (and looking forward to) every Dave Barry column. He was a trailblazing humor writer who has been, more than anyone else I have read, consistently funny. His writings have been cheekily filled with the inefficiencies of government bureaucrats and the sinister nature of the IRS. Spurred by an instance of Marquette University demanding someone take down a quote of his about distrust of government, he talks about speech codes with the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.

Context, context, context
The argument is presented in a way that no one can find fault with the premise. Folks across the entire political spectrum rightly demand the right to express themselves. Naturally, some vital compenents of individual cases of alleged abuses need to be seen. Thus the alleged abuses can better be judged without the one-sided attacks.

Barry's memory of offensive speech in the 60's is rooted in expressions aimed at power. But if you steer the modern discussion to specifics you may find cases where speech is used to intimidate relatively powerless victims. Is that defensible?

Free speech allows you to make a case without considering both sides, or even being fair or accurate. But this issue should include voices encouraging personal responsibility.

you missed the point
in college censorship, dave. it is only non-liberal speech that is offensive, therefore suppressed. leftist speech is as safe as ever. i am not making this up.
