The Plans for Impending Impeachment: For Real, Though. Not For Play-Play.
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 6:13 PM

Behold, a Dem-controlled House. Step One: Impeachment for NSA surveillance, global warming, or Gitmo. Throw 'em all at the wall of the Judiciary Committee chamber and see which sticks.

Conyers's H.R. 635 involves creating “a select committee to investigate the Administration's intent to go to war before congressional authorization, manipulation of pre-war intelligence, encouraging and countenancing torture, retaliating against critics, and to make recommendations regarding grounds for possible impeachment.”

Justifying the submittal of that bill, Conyers said, “There has been massive support for House Resolution 635 from a very vigorous network of grassroots activists and people committed to holding the Bush Administration accountable for its widespread abuses of power.” And he was right, for since the run-up to Operation Iraqi Freedom, radical left-wing groups had been calling for Bush’s impeachment– and organizing petition drives to pressure legislators to that end.

H/t Stop the ACLU.

Ace suggests voting.

I suggest donating. But to whom? Some ideas of where your money will work best, from John Hawkins.

And, since I'm doin' electoral Fear Factor over here, try this one on for size: Speaker? Pelosi Could Be President

How bad would Grandma Pelosi be as House speaker?

She is rated 100 percent by NARAL, the pro-abortion group. She gets an F from the National Rifle Association.

She gets a 100 percent rating from the National Education Association. She gets a 0 percent rating from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which wants to crack down on illegal immigration.

Then she turns around and calls Republicans extremists.

I do not want to portray her as a caricature of a San Francisco liberal, but that is how she votes.

A TV sitcom would reject as cliched a script that gave a San Francisco congresswoman such a voting record.

As I say: Dunh, dunh, DUUNNHHH!

Pelosi denies that impeachment is among her priorities, but The Nation is reporting on communities with "impeachment" referenda on their ballots this fall, and San Francisco is one of them. Constituent pressure is a powerful thing.

What Really Matters...
...Is that the Republican Congress has totally, unpatriotically, disregarded its duty to conduct investigations and oversight. See Robert Kuttner's article:

http://www.prospect.org/web/view-print.ww?id=12014

I don't care about impeachment. But the stuff the Democrats want to investigate -- NSA surveillance, global warming, Gitmo -- is stuff that the Congress *should* be investigating. Indeed, it's a national disgrace that the Congress that spent so much time investigating Clinton now refuses to investigate Bush for anything. Do you think that it's a *good* thing that we've had no serious Congressional investigations in six years?

(And no, the Dems didn't act like this when they had all three branches of government. In 1993-4 the Democrats held oversight hearings of Clinton and even pressured him into appointing a special prosecutor for Whitewater.)

The Impeachment would be for show
Liberals know who they'll get if they successfully run Bush out of office - DICK CHENEY!! Any Impeachment proceedings would just be for show to score political points with their base to excite them for the 2008 election.

The Democratic Congress & ABSCAM
Note to Snapdigger...

When the DEMs held power during the ABSCAM investigation in which the FBI investigated them and found many of them corrupt as the day is long, how did the DEMS respond??? Did they clean their House like the Republicans have done with Foley? Did they have an investigation? Actually, yes, they had an investigation, but they did not clean house. Guess who they investigated??? They investigated THE FBI. How is that for ARROGANCE???

Future
We will probably lose Congress. I will vote as many times as I can, but I think its about done.

Then what? We will be paralyzed. We have an enemy that will take advantage of that. (Yes, Krazy Kos Kids lurkers, we do have an enemy in this war).

/checking ammo and food supplies....

NSA program is legal what to investigate? Just for show to their base. Just to tie up the gov't for two years, while the Pres. is fighting the WOT.

Global warming, have you lost contact with reality. Investigate Bush because of his stand and what he does/or dosen't do about "CLIMATE CHANGE" BTW climate changes because that's what it does.

Gitmo-what are you just naming things.

BTW even if Dems take the House and vote impeachment against Bush [at this point in time the war, etc. is it the correct thing to do?] read the Constitution and see how many vots in the Senate to convict. They will have to take quite a few Senate seats to convict [it will never happen]. So it's just an sop to throw to their base.

Impeachment
Impeaching GB for the war in Iraq is unjustifiable nonsense. The American middle would punish all the Dems in moderate states for trying this. Also, any Dem presidential candidate that supported this would loose in 2008.

However.... Impeaching GB over his unlawful protection of employers who hire the illegal invaders is very justifiable and possibly profitable. Maybe Cheney would crack down on employers and demolish the reason these invaders are here. Massive numbers of unemployed invaders would make them unwelcome in the homes of legal hispanics who are now aiding and abbeting them. Back to the #@%& hole they came from would be the obvious solution. And... the Dems would loose 10 million new voters!

Dems or Reps - They're both the same
It doesn't matter who holds the House or the Senate. Both parties are screwing the middle class of this country.
BTW, how do people reconcile the idea that people have a low regard for Congress and want a change with the fact that most also think their own representatives are just fine?
Threats of impeachment no longer hold water. Nor do the threats of runaway spending. The Republicans have been spending money like there is no tomorrow. Impeachment requires a super majority of both houses. Even if they do control both houses of Congress, Democrats are not likely to get enough to ensure the votes they want. They have spent the last six years teaching Senate Republicans the uses of the filibuster. Here's hoping the Republicans learned their lessons well.

Prez Pelosi...
Although it seems unlikely that this will occur, do not be so naive to think that the Dems have forgotten Clinton's impeachment. Remember how the media used its clout to change the issue from "lying under oath" to "that poor man, why don't those evil Republicans leave him alone?". If the media gets behind an impeachment drive (think "Watergate") it will paralyze this country and cause gridlock in the War on Terror at the very least.
