'the "oh so wonderful Carter years".'

According to a current CNN poll, Carter has a higher approval rating with the American public than George H. W. Bush, 64% for Carter and 60% for Bush. At the high end we have Clinton at 69% and Obama at 82%; W. Bush far, far below all of them, of course. http://tinyurl.com/7xkymu

"asked Gates to stay on duty for one more year."

Gates is DoD, not Homeland Security.

"Bush respected the law and decided to wait until the local and state government requested help."

Long since debunked with phone records and emails. Bush was helping McCain cut a birthday cake and trying to play a guitar while people were drowning.

"in HI renting a $9 million home"

That's pretty funny. Obama is one of the least wealthy politicians on the national stage. Shall we compare his vacation rental to McCain's home ownership?

Yeah, right ex-Pat
"on Sept 12, 2001 virtually the entire WORLD was 100% behind Bush......."

EXCEPT FOR:

the jealous Western Europeans......

And a GREAT portion of the Middle East, who still want to kill us......

And Red China who would love to see our economy totally collapse so that they would be the #1 economy in the world (a goal they have openly espoused)......

And the former Soviet Empire who would love to be the world's most powerful military, free to do as they please....

And Venezuela....

And Cuba.......

And on & on........

W
W will always stand for "worst." That's a given.

But, history will also say that W was the one President who squandered the greatest opportunity any President was ever given.

Remember: on September 12, 2001 virually the entire WORLD was 100% behind Bush, wishing him well and hoping he would destroy the monsters who attacked us.

That will be his ultimate legacy.

Because Hussein got a single moment of wisdom and asked Gates to stay on duty for one more year....and Gates was a great american to say YES, as long as I keep my team mates. That is how I know.
Katrina was mismanaged by a Mayor who did not implement an existing emergency plan, and a governor who did not find time to request aid from the federal government. Bush respected the law and decided to wait until the local and state government requested help. Unfortunately, incompetent democrats (mayor and governor) did not care much about the poor voters who were being destroyed - to them it was about making Bush look bad to secure their political future. And the dumb voters bought it. Unfortunately, the mayor and governor are still in politics and the poor voters used to gain democratic control of congress are still homeless.
The new change machine is shirtless in HI renting a $9 million home and has not made the Katrina victims a priority because .....let me guess - he is still waiting for president Bush?

Keep the change!

"(He kept us safe for 8 years after 9/11/01)"

That would be until next September. How can you be sure of that?

"His was the best of times (no attacks at home)"

Not counting THE SINGLE LARGEST TERRORIST ATTACK IN US HISTORY. I'm pretty sure the population of New Orleans and Galveston haven't seen it as the best of times, either, though they were attacked by weather, not terrorists.

Security and Spending - W's Legacy
I voted for him and I would do it again. His legacy will be defined by national security (He kept us safe for 8 years after 9/11/01), and Spending (He spent unreasonably for a conservative). His was the best of times (no attacks at home) and the worst of times (borrowing from the chinese to spend without control or without using veto power at all).

We shall see
I agree with Hugh that Bush acted with grace even when his critics were in full rabid mode. I do not think we can expect the same of Obama. When he is given a tough question from a media that drools over him, he starts whining. If people treat him even a tiny bit like Bush was treated, I can only imagine the reaction.

Liberals were way too quick to shriek that Bush was to blame for the handling of Katrina while conveniently neglecting to mention that Nagin and Blanco were the collossal failures! They laughingly sneered about him being a cowboy, but when the liberals politicians were too ignorant to respond to a natural disaster, they expected him to come riding in like John Wayne and the cavalry to save the day--pathetic! Those who point their fingers at Bush while giving the two Dems who really caused the problem a pass are only showing their extreme BDS and hypocricy.

If the left does not hold Obama to the same standards as they do Bush, I will be very disappointed, and I may be forced to think they are operating under a double standard! I hope the left knows that we will be watching and pointing out any failings, and they had better not whine about it!

Oh but you are SO WRONG!!!!!

Heck you may not even be old enough to have been an adult during the "oh so wonderful Carter years"........

synopsis:
He let our Iranian Embassy hostages languish under the capture of Iranian students for 14 months; Carter being so impotent as to accomplish nothing towards their release (think deer in the headlights)...
Another fond rememberance of those years were the 18-20% mortgage rates we suffered under....BTW, don't blame the GOP for ANY of our economic woes during Goober's tenure........The "Dims" controlled both houses of Congress during his entire term.....
And last, but certainly not least, was Carter's frightening revelation that he was "attacked" by a "killer bunny" while fishing. HUH???? While FISHING???? How the hell does that happen? Bad enough that your POTUS thought his life was in danger from Peter Cottontail.......EVEN WORSE was that coward would tell anybody!!!!!
All I can say........THANK GOD FOR NOV.1980 AND RONALD REAGAN!!!!!!
Made you proud to be an American again.......

As bad as Carter was, Bush makes him look like the greatest genius of all times. Future generations will spend years pulling the buckshot from their rears due to the policies pursued by not only Bush, but Clinton as well.

GWB can NEVER be regarded as our worst POTUS ever......
at least not as long as the history books aren't altered to omit our 39th President, Goober Carter.....

Obama
Well for those of you who ignorantly think Bush is the worst President ever...

you should be happy, right after his inauguration Obama will

balance the budget,
revive the economy,
solve the real estate problem,
solve the auto industry problem,
solve our gas/alternative energy problem,
stop the fires and mudslides in California,
ban hurricanes and tornadoes,
stop identity theft,
reverse global warming,
find Osama,
solve the Israeli/Palestinian conflict,
get rid of corruption in government,
and achieve world peace

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Obama is actually going to make the 90% of the country that is not part of the looney left realize Bush was not so bad after all.

Legacy? Worst PODUS in American History - a complete and total bafoon. A man who should never have been PODUS. An intellectual featherweight. A terrible judge of character - Cox, Paulson, Brownie, Meyers, etc......

Bush
As with all Presidents there are good and bad things

Bush's good: He cut taxes and led us out of the recession; he has kept us safe post 9/11; he freed 50mm people in Iraq and Afghanistan; he appointed judges Roberts and Alito to the Supreme Court

Bush's bad: bailouts, did not veto one budget, deficit spending grew, did not handle Katrina well at all

Overall - I think history will be kind to Bush. He has had perhaps the most difficult presidencies off all time. He inherited a recession, there was a terrorist attack, a large US city was flooded, gas prices soared, and there was a housing bubble and financial mess. Most of the problems he had to deal with he did not create. I think he handled everything much better than Gore or Kerry would have.

Once BDR fades, and poison tongued ones
...like Lola and Bennett start focusing on their next object to hate, Bush's legacy will boil down, objectively, to a few basic issues. 1) His policy of a "new tone" in Washington was a political disaster. The opposing party - the lying, cheating, stealing, anti-American democrats - savaged him at every opportunity. 2) His domestic "socialist light" agenda was despised by the conservative core of his own party, and the lefty lib oppostion still savaged him at every opportunity. 3) His focus on the war on terrorism exposed him further to being savaged by the lefty lib opposition who at times appeared to be rooting for the terrorists against him.

The biggest tragedy under Bush, which the lefty libs should appreciate, was the fall of the Republican Party. They evolved from a principled, conservative group to another bunch of typical, self-serving, socialist-oriented politicians.
Joe writes: Tuesday, January, 06, 2009 10:44 AM
It is a mixed legacy...
There were some huge mistakes on George W. Bush's part, but some huge challenges too. History will be kinder to Bush than the polls currently are, but many of these mistakes were avoidable. The two biggest was not controlling spending and mishandling (badly) the Iraq occuption for several years.

The spending spree was unforgiveable for a conservative. The occupation whet so badly for several years due to Rumsfeld and Cheney's mismanagement that the Iraq war probably was not worth geting involved with in the first place. Had they Petraeus plan (or something similar) had been in place earlier, the outcome would have been far different, and would would have been the attitude about this.

That said: I have never regretted voting for Bush over Gore. I have never regretted voting for Bush over Kerry.
Bennett writes: Tuesday, January, 06, 2009 10:40 AM
Wow...
Osama Bin Laden will eventually die of old age, but Bush's big government and surveillance policies will be here to torment our kids and grandkids and grand-grandkids forever. We're Socialist now, thanks to him.

Just because we haven't been attacked again doesn't say anything about Bush. We weren't attacked (by an army of 20 whole people!) for 60 years BEFORE him either. Give him credit for that too?

He ruined our entire country and betrayed everything we believed in because 20 people attacked us, one time.

Mark my words, Bush WILL be hated. He WILL go down as one of the worst presidents in history. Rightfully so.
