From the McCain campaign:
ARLINGTON, VA -- U.S. Senator John McCain today announced that he has selected Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate and to serve as his vice president.
Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.
Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us -- Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.
In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the "bridge to nowhere" that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.
As the head of Alaska's National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.
Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

I think BHO and his staff just needed to change their underpants. The GOP VP in now practically untouchable. |
|
|
Historic times any way you look at it. How can Obama deal with this? |

Wonder what that she dog Pelosi is thinking right now. Hope she is wetting herself. She will no longer be the most powerful woman in governmemt. The reason Hillary didn't make it. Very soon she will be looking for a new job. |
|
|
Now this is a great pick!!! Absolutely fantastic lady! I was pulling for Pawlenty toward the end, but this was a very wise decision for McCain. |
|
And with a president who could kick at any minute.
I guess you can't really give a concession speech before the official nomination, so McCain did the next best thing. |
|
I will miss Mike Huckabee. Perhaps he will be Joint Chief of Staff. But I think Palin is a far better choice than MITT Romney. So I am well pleased. As I learn more about her the more I see it was a brilliant choice. Even so I, as a conservative, am very well pleased. I now relent, this long struggle. For Mike Huckabee has not really lost, as an African-American man, I see Palin championing Mike Huckabee's cause. And I am happy of this choice. NOW LET'S ALL JOIN FORCES TO TAKE AMERICA BACK ..... WE ARE WELL ABLE!!! |

Mac, say what you will but he is not another Bob Dole. |

[The dims are huddled in a corner in a big group hug.]
Actually, from the blogs I've seen, they are rather pleased. The top stated reasons thus far:
- It removes the inexperience meme.
- It looks like a move less motivated by choice and more motivated by a desperate need to motivate the base.
- Biden will wipe the floor with her in the debate on foreign policy questions.
- She has an ongoing ethics investigation involving abuse of power and family drama.
Personally, I don't think the average voter gives a crap about Veeps. |

Sarah's husband is a true American minority! She and her family, son serving in Iraq, should add alot to this ticket! |
|
Can you say 'Cheap shot'? If that is the best you can do run over to moveon.org and get some pointers. I was pulling for Romney but this is probably a more powerful move.
|
|
|
Best choice McCain could have made! I am beyond happy today! |
|
|
Great, I'm so juiced for the election. Obama-Biden BRING IT ON, we can take you down. I'm floating on air. Happy Birthday John, you certainly have given me a great present today. |

McCain is getting smarter as he gets older. Now I get to vote for a capable, non-socialist female, vote against a far far right socialist and long-term insider in the same election. Pleased as punch with his choice. Now have Obiden chew on that for awhile. McCain is NOT unsure about his fondness for America. Never has been. He does not want to participate in economic justice, which is just another extreme form of wealth redistribution mainly to those who have not worked for it. McCain will not cut and run and have our men and women die for nothing in Iraq and leave the Iraqis to fall flat on their face and leave the middle east worse than it was before the surge. Despite the taxation claims of Obama, his majestic, unrealistic policies are grossly underfunded. He is going to tax small businesses out of business, and they provide about 70% of jobs in the U.S. Thanks John McCain for your selection. See you other folks without a brain or any idea what you are wishing for at the polls in November. NOBama. |

sThe newspaper are touting Obama as the first black nominated for President and this is the supposedly fulfillment of Martin Luther King's dream. What a gross distortion. King said he dreamt of the day people would be judged for the content of their character and not the color of their skin. So for Obama, one disregards his character (20 years with racist Jeremiah Wright and terroist Ayers)not to mention Obama's marxist policies. One should celebrate and vote for him becuase he is black. Now McCain chooses a VP simply because of her plumbing. There goes McCain's Obama-is-inexperienced argument. If this is an example of McCain's mentality and how he would govern, I and many other Republicans will simply stay home. Obama wins by default. Thanks John for selling us out. |
|
and I'll go ahead and say congrats to Sen. McCain, for winning this Presidential election.
Shrewd and yet prudent pick, I think.
It's nice to have at least one candidate this cycle with some executive experience. |
|
I guess I'll start embroidering my McCain/Palin yarmulke.
Can't wait to wear it on Rosh Hashanah :-)

"Can you say 'Cheap shot'?"
Are you kidding? Has the issue of experience, time in office, etc. never been brought up before in this election? Did you blast those mentions as "cheap shots?"
McCain made a choice that he probably thought was his best chance to get elected, but in doing so he put the entire country at risk. He's saying that in a time of significant world unrest and danger, it's ok for America to have a very old president and a vice-president with NO foreign policy experience and only 18 months in office running a tiny, quirky state.
Quite simply, he's putting his own political ambitions above what's best for the country. |
|
I agree the VP does not have much impact. The only time I think it ever did was when George H.W. Bush picked Quayle.
However, the Dems can spin all they want on their blogs. However, behind close doors they have to be VERY worried about this pick. |
|
Go Sara! An Obama pundit struck my funny bone when she said "Sara is no Hillary"! Well Biden is no Hillary power either! The Dems., spin now is Sara doesn't have experience, guess what, Obama does not have much experience and he may be the President! A vice President experience is not so necessary. Please Obamacans, don't insult our intelligence with the foolish com- parisons of experience between Joe and Sara; when your Rookie Obama is so weak he had to pick an insider, Biden, who has the knowledge he lacks!
|
|
[However, behind close doors they have to be VERY worried about this pick]
Why, exactly?
Yes. She is a smart, conservative woman who appeals to the base and may appeal to the handful of Clinton hold-outs who would irrationally vote out of spite.
But I would counter that if a fair percentage of Americans (as is demonstrated regularly by polls) can't even name the current Veep or the Speaker of the House, or the number of justices on the Supreme Court, and still can't find Iraq on a map, their first reaction will be to ask, "Sarah Who?"
Aside from which, all of the reasons the Democrats have listed have some degree of validity (with the exception of Biden creaming her in a debate - to which I would say "don't count your chickens...") |
|
|
This will prove to be a fantastic choice. Pro-life, executive experience and someone who could sway the disgruntled Hillary folks. In all honesty, I'm not sure how many of them are left after the emotional speeches and Hollywood methods at the DNC (By the way...did you notice how BHO did NOT publically thank the city and county of Denver...what a dirtbag). Palin's executive experience, while for a smaller state, could help to address the economic experience shortcomings of McCain. It's interesting how the "change" trademark could really apply to the McCain team this week and not the BHO team with this pick. Older and wiser will win out in this election. |
|
She excites the base and the fact that she is an unknown and woman she will dominate the news this weekend!
Last night Obama gave his acceptance speech and it is already forgotten. People are now talking about Sarah Palin!
I do not think she will win over many Hillary supporters. But I think she will help with Reagan Democrats and Independents. |
|
[A vice President experience is not so necessary.]
Sorry to say, but statistically, McCain's a lot closer to the end of the average lifespan curve, and she would be his replacement should he reach the end of it, so this can be made an issue.
And I expect it will made one if McCain's surrogates try to pound Obama as inexperienced.
[Obama is so weak he had to pick an insider, Biden, who has the knowledge he lacks]
Conversely, the argument can just as easily be made that McCain is weak and had to pick a candidate who appealed to religious and social conservatives to bribe them into voting for him. |
|
I've supported Romney from the beginning. I still believe he will play a huge role in the Republican party for years to come.
However, I like the idea of Palin. I don't know much about her, though. So I can only hope that the reality of her fulfills the idea of her.
Not so fast on the "This kills the inexperience issue for McCain" clap trap. I entusiastically encourage the McCain campaign to be all the more aggressive on this point. I dare The Dali Bama to compare his experience to Palin's. I just DARE him. Palin wins that one hands down.

Hey Munckeybutt,
I would love to hear your take on how this puts the entire country at risk when Sarah Palin has every bit as much foreign policy experience as the oblama. In addition she brings executive experience as a Govenor of her state.
18 months as Govenor as opposed to 18 in the Senate, and most of that on the campaign trail! It is a joke that with the time he has actually spent in the Senate that he hasn't found it necessary to convene one meeting of the committe that he chairs! I wouldn't make experience an issue because the oblama can't win that argument. As Hillary once stated, he has a speech in 2002!

So let's move on the the question about putting political ambition above what's best for the country! The democrats annoint the one person, seeking the office of President, that brings the least amount of experience to the table. Care to tell everyone why that is?
Oh, yes, I seem to recall something about hope and change. Is that why he selected a 30 year Washington insider as his running mate? I'd suggest that Palin is the fresh face in this election! She is the Washington outsider that can offer real hope and change. Face it, with the support of Republicans, Conservatives, and a few of those Hillary supporters that the great oblama p!ssed on, she will be the next VP!
McCain/Palin '08! Looks like you dimwits stepped on your d!k again, but that's okay. Just keep nominating them self-serving ignorant buffoons like "I Invented the Internet Gore-Bull Warming", followed by the "Dishonorable Did you know I served in 'Nam Kerry", and now "I am the Dream, Wizard of Uhs, Where's my Telepromter oblama".
We love it! Don C |
