What McCain Must Say at CPAC
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:17 AM

Everyone is offering John McCain advice on what he needs to say today, and I am no exception.

My general feeling is that this can't be merely a stump speech where he talks about how conservative he is.  He also won't get by simply by reminding us he was a "foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution" -- and that Ronald Reagan brought him to the first CPAC back in '74.   That's all important to know, mind you, but it's not enough to persuade conservatives that he's to be trusted ...

Instead, at some point, he needs to quit giving a "speech" -- put down his notes -- and look us in the eye -- for a real heart-to-heart.

At that point, he should admit there are areas where we he disagrees with us (no point in trying to hide that).  He should then promise his door will always be open for us (if he doesn't agree with us, he will at least hear us out).  He needs to promise to incorporate conservative leaders into his campaign and presidency (access is important).  And he needs to promise that he harbors no animosity toward our leaders, and that as far as he is concerned, there is a clean slate (a lot of conservatives don't just dislike him -- they fear him).

... And if he wants to get some good buzz coming off his speech, he might also want to set up a quick meeting with conservative bloggers at CPAC.

Of course, there are some people who will never support McCain -- even if he's running against Hillary.  But I believe my advice would help get him started toward patching up the wounds.

Let's see if he follows it ...

I've now read....
5 of these "advice" columns for McCain. All I can say is that each one has taken a different point of view on what he should say, so there are probably going to be some disappointed people when he's done. It just further cements my opinion that he could go up there and give a great, empassioned speech today, and there will still be naysayers out there.

A Speech?
What the hell kinda' analysis is this crap? A speech, huh? I don't give a flying leap about a speech this man might make. McShamnesty has a voting record a mile wide and the stench can be smelt for thousands. A speech, a speech. What tripe? Here's a news flash. The nomination process goes on. To those people who have a brain, get out their and vote and to hell with the speeches. This man will lie, cheat, steal, use illegal voters, anything, to get elected. McShamnesty must be stopped, if for no other reason, than his track record of putting Mexico above America. I, for one, believe that anyone who has to hear a speech from McLiar to make a decision at this point is an idiot. It is no wonder that the founding fathers went to great lengths to ensure the undeducated, ill-informed masses did not get to choose our leaders. If this election doesn't make the importance of that point clear, nothing will.

McCAIN must PLEDGE IN WRITING @ CPAC TO
assure Republicans that he will NOT SIGN-

1.ANY SORT OF AMNESTY BILL
2.ANY SORT OF "FAIRNESS" DOCTRINE
3.REVERSE McCAIN/FEINGOLD
4.REVERSE McCAIN/LIEBERMAN
5.REVERSE McCAIN/KENNEDY
6.STATE THAT HE'S BEEN DEAD WRONG ON EVERYTHING BUT IRAQ & FIGHTING THE JIHADIST TERRORISTS DURING THE LAST 10 YEARS OF HIS SENATE CAREER.
7.STATE THAT HIS GOAL IS NOT TO REACH ACROSS AISLES, BUT TO DO WHAT'S CONSERVATIVE! (I'm suspicious the only reaching out over ailses he'll do is to the Republicans since he's actually a Democrat).
8.STATE HE WAS WRONG ON SAYING HILLARY WOULD MAKE A FINE PRESIDENT.
9.SAY HE WAS WRONG FOR WANTING TO LEAVE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IN 2006.
10.SAY HE WAS WRONG & SELF INDULGENT FOR WANTING TO BE JOHN KERRY'S VICE PRESIDENT
11.SAY HE WAS OUT OF HIS MIND EVERY TIME HE BELIGERANTLY CURSED OUT HIS FELLOW REPUBLICANS ON THE SENATE FLOOR.
12.ADMIT HE LIED ABOUT MITT ROMNEY! THAT HE DISTORTED THE TRUTH TO TRICK VOTERS IN FLORIDA and THAT IT WAS DISINGENEOUS OF HIM
13.ADMIT HE HAS A BOMBASTIC TEMPER
14.ADMIT SHOULD HAVE NEVER JOINED THE GANG OF 14 & THEY WERE ALL WRONG. HE SHOULD'VE NEVER ALIGNED HIMSELF W/ ROBERT KKK BYRD.
16.ADMIT HE WAS WRONG ON KEATING
17.ADMIT HE WAS WRONG ON NOT SUPPORTING THE BUSH TAX CUTS

for me to take him the least bit seriously.

I have absolutely NO faith in this guy...he's a disaster.

Matt
I totally agree with you, but his belligerent attitude of "I'm right and have always been right and if you don't like it you can stuff it" is what I expect. I suspect that even many of the conservatives who feel so betrayed by McCain would prefer him to Hillary, but he has spent so many years reaching across the aisle that he is perceived as now being entrenched accross that aisle - needing to reach back accross.

He seems to have enjoyed poking a finger in conservative's eyes and he has a lot of 'splaining to do, and I don't think he has that in him. I have to keep my barf bag close whenever I hear the "proud conservative, and Reagan foot soldier" BS.

No candidate I have ever supported saw everything exactly as I, but McCain has wondered so far off the conservative reservation that I don't believe he can make it back - or that he wants to for that matter.

I think it would be a disater for our contry to have either Obama or Hillary in the White House with democrats controlling both houses of congress, but I am not will, at least at this time to compromise my values, my standards, and my integrity and vote for McCain. I really wish I felt differently but I cannot and will not at this point.

I know it's late in the game but I have not given up on Mitt Romney, who I believe to be the most honest, qualified candidate to lead our country

Anyone know? Thanks!

THE BEST THING HE COULD SAY
WOULD BE ONE THING. "DUE TO THE DIVISION OF THE GOP, I FEEL THE BEST THING I CAN DO IS WITHDRAW MY CANDIDACY". Yeah in a perfect world!

18.THAT HE WAS WRONG TO COLLABERATE WITH MIKE HUCKABEE IN MANIPULATING THE VOTE IN WEST VIRGINIA & INTENTIOALLY DID THIS TO PULL VOTES AWAY FROM MITT ROMNEY BECAUSE HE IS AFFRAID HE'S THE BETTER CANDIDATE!

Be A Maverick! No McCain Votes!

The Stupid Party

The RNC wants an amnesty candidate.

Don't vote for one.

Another amnesty will result in Democrat majorities for decades, or until they are supplanted by the La Raza Party, why doesn't the RNC know that? How stupid do you have to be to import voters for the opposition at the same time you alienate your own voters? Nominating any of the amnesty supporters is a losing proposition, we will not support them. If the GOP intends to surrender our sovereignty and abandon the rule of law, they will find in November 2008, that they still have their big money/cheap labor donors, but they do not have voters. Good grief! Do you really believe that conservatives are so dumb that all we want is a nice little speech and a huggy?

MCCAIN'S REWQUESTING REPUBLICANS TO
"CALM DOWN"! He's already trying to surpress our freedom of speech & he's not even the official Republican Candidate!
He has another thing coming if he thinks that Republicans are going to "Calm Down!". Didn't he learn that this past summer when WE SHUT HIM & THE REST OF HIS AMNESTY CRONIES DOWN!
Apparently he's forgotten!!!

The speech
All this advice to McCain about a silly speech is just proof that they think we're all idiots.

We have McCain's record and we know the man's MO. What good are words, now?

He is unfit to be the republican nominee. I don't know exactly how he's pulled it off beyond help from the MSM and GOP elites, but he is the

WORST

candidate of all of them, with the possible exception of Huckabee.

How we got to the point where the ringleader of Shamnesty is our nominee I will NEVER understand. What happened to my party?

Who votes for him? Yes, I know. Moderates, liberals and indies. Certainly NOT conservatives. We aren't his people, and I don't expect him to suck up to us.

Judi and HEY FOLKS!
Yes THEY do. One of the dirty little secrets The MacChurian Candidate has outed here is that our beloved "Conservative" Bloggers here on TH have been captured by "the system". They used to be counter-cultural---now they are just another bunch of inside the culture, inside the beltway,
ESTABLISHMENT "activists" at CPAC going to the A-
list parties.

And they are looking for a FIG LEAF so they can
BEND OVER for The MacChurian Candidate and so retain their relevance (and therefore STATUS) within that ESTABLISHMENT.

Hell, MK (Dhamnation) Hamster was obediently running the treadmill for Oh? Really? last night, confidently assuring him that the bloggers had come around and were getting solidly behind The MacChurian Candidate.

Don't know what she was wearing, but the vision of Blue Dresses kept coming (no pun there, really,--as Bill "I did not talk dirty to that woman" Oh? Really" spun himself "I'm not interested in that stuff.") into my mind?

As I have said elsewhere, as the powers have now rigged it, Hillybama is now the actual "lesser" of the two evils. I reject The Establishment's Socialism Lite slow poison, choose Hillybama's Straight, and hope America chokes on it a pukes it up!
