Benazir Bhutto, RIP

Benazir Bhutto possessed enormous courage and an iron will. Her willingness to return to her county in the face of the certain attacks was an extraordinary display of selflessness. The terrorists knew she represented everything they could not abide, so they kept trying to kill her until they succeeded.
The lesson for the West is that the war with the Islamists is not only far, far from over but in fact may be accelerating, and that more leaders with the sort of courage, resolve and energy displayed by Bhutto are needed now more than ever.
President Musharraf must take the war to the ungoverned places of the country or see such atrocities continue. Pakistan's nuclear arsenal is the most inviting goal for the al Qaeda cells, an issue which could have used a lot of attention in the presidential campaign reaching its cresendo. Rudy Giuliani has put out a statement that should be echoed by all of the candidates today:
“The assassination of Benazir Bhutto is a tragic event for Pakistan and for democracy in Pakistan. Her murderers must be brought to justice and Pakistan must continue the path back to democracy and the rule of law. Her death is a reminder that terrorism anywhere — whether in New York, London, Tel-Aviv or Rawalpindi — is an enemy of freedom. We must redouble our efforts to win the Terrorists’ War on Us.”
UPDATE: Max Boot has more:
There is a vast “silent majority” in Pakistan that abhors the militants and has come to detest military rule. They are waiting for a leader. Bhutto, for all her imperfections, could have been that leader. She won’t be now. Alas. But let us hope that she will at least become a martyr for the cause of Islamic democracy, and that her death will inspire others to carry on her brave struggle.

RIP Ms. Bhutto...
Very sad indeed.
Some time ago, quite a few, including myself, questioned the timing of her return to Pakistan, which only seemed to increase violent tensions.
The end result is just another tragedy.
But MikeS ???
John McCain has never LEAD anything, for he has been an Elite Beltway insider for over 24 years now.
A Senator who has been a part of an embarrassing group of self centered egotists in the misguided US Congress, lacking any sincere personal responsibility for anything.
McCain even failed to rebuke Hillary Clinton when she impugned the integrity of General Petraeus.
His attempt to claim responsibility for the Petraeus Surge is also regretful.
This is a populist who foolishly failed to vote for the tax cuts, which have helped Our fine Nation tremendously.
John McCain sat on the David Letterman Show, and declared the loss of some of Our Bravest as being 'wasted'.
Only a fool, would say something this absurd...
No, Senator McCain is simply not what this Nation needs nor wants.
A Washington Insider who failed again to challenge Congress to rise above petty partisan politics, or even to abandon their recent massive Pork spending.
It is amusing to see Liberal Democrats push for the Keating 5 member.
They seem to fear fine ethical Conservatives like Mr. Romney and Rudy.

Must you BELABOR it on this Thread? Sheeez. (*Incidentally, a Much Better, Stronger Case can be made for Rudy. And, unlike McCain, he's not King Baby Insane.*)
Briggs: You are the dream fulfillment of the type butchers who murdered Benazir. Be gentle, be kind, be loving, be empathetic to Dark Age Islamist Savages...And, jeepers Corky, they'll change their ways. See ya at the stoning pit, Briggs. You'll be guest of honor, you poor dumb-well meaning twit.
BENAZIR: R.I.P. & GODSPEED. |

On the contrary, it's absolutely vital to discuss this now. This assassination is a crisis, one of many we are about to face. We cannot afford to get this one wrong about who to elect, because the future survival of our country may be at risk.
I am a social liberal and I disagree with McCain on MANY issues, but I am supporting him because he is the only one, in my opinion, who can handle these issues. I urge you to change your mind about this. None of these other issues, immigration, gang of 14, McCain Feingold, none of them have any significance as compared to our national security. |

thread, will ya, Mr.Classless? Good F***ing Grief.
Benazir...R.I.P. and Godspeed. |

Did Mitt get the chance to consult his team of attorneys after this happened? If not, how is he going to be able to know who to appoint to his committee to determine a solution to this problem? |
|
A brave and inspiring figure who may be even more an agent of change as a martyr.
**Briggs: Kill Islamist Radical Butchers, so that Islamic women may become empowered. You Libs always get things bassackwards.** |

Was it necessary for John McCain to be awakened from his 8:00 a.m. nap to be told that Bhutto was killed? I'm sure this will make Johnnie crabby until they can put him down for his 10:00 a.m. nap. |

that Musharraf may have been behind this attack, rather than fundamentalists.
John McCain is the ONLY candidate with the foreign policy experience to handle situations like this and what we will face in the future. This is precisely why we need to ignore such red herring issues as immigration and the "gang of 14" stuff and support the only grownup in the group. We cannot afford a non-entity like Romney in the White House at this time in our history... |
