Rosie Calls Kelly Ripa Homophobic, Ripa Calls the Show to Blast Her (Update: Video Added)
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:42 AM

All right, fine. I'm watching "The View" again. It just happens sometimes. I have no control over it.

Today, our friendly host Rosie O'Donnell accused Kelly Ripa of acting like a homophobe on "Regis and Kelly," when she had Clay Aiken on as a guest-host. What, pray tell, was the act that set Rosie off, making such accusations on national TV justifable? Here's the clip:

Clay claps his hand over Kelly's mouth because he felt like he wasn't getting a word in edgewise. Kelly's obviously upset by it, and says, among other things, "I don't know where that hand's been."

On "The View," Rosie and the girls talked about the Clay and Kelly incident, and Rosie, predictably, said Kelly's comment about where that hand had been was "homophobic."

"If that had been Mario Lopez doing that, she wouldn't have said that. As a gay woman, it seems to me, that was a homophobic gesture."

Kelly promptly called into the show and let Rosie have it, saying her comments were "irresponsible" and "she should know better. Not everything is homophobic." Kelly said she was concerned about germs because it's cold-and-flu season, and miffed that her guest-host had made a pretty rude, condescending gesture toward her.

Rosie laced her accusations of homophobia with the fact that she thinks Kelly's a "good girl" and "really good at that job," which she felt made everything okay. Rosie didn't back down. She defended the comments as "her view," and said "that's just how it came off." You know, "as a gay woman," which I guess means you can just throw around baseless accusations.

Thank goodness Kelly came at her. It was nice to see someone standing up to her other than Elisabeth. "The View" guest-host also stuck up for Kelly, saying she wouldn't want someone's hands on her face, and adding that shutting up your female co-host by putting your hand over her mouth isn't exactly politically correct, either.

I've always been a Kelly Ripa fan. Just like Elisabeth, she has a thousand times more class than Rosie. Maybe she'll be on the show more often if Rosie keeps insulting her. It'd make the programming better.

For the record, I think I would have had trouble not flipping out on someone if he clapped his hand over my mouth on national TV. She was totally right to be insulted. It was disrespectful.

I'm sure someone will have the video of the Kelly phone call any minute now. I'll keep an eye out.

Update: Watch the video over at the Political Pit Bull.
