Early in the morning on Sunday, as we were finishing up amendments on the Defense Appropriations bill, I debated an earmark challenge with the Chairman of the Defense Subcommittee on Appropriations, Congressman John Murtha (D-PA). The earmark allocated $2 million to Sherwin-Williams Paint Company to develop what they described as a "paint shield to protect against microbial attacks." As the sponsor of the amendment, Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones (D-OH) did not come down to defend her earmark. The defense was left to Congressman Murtha.
Here is a link to this brief debate, now keep in mind all I wanted to know was:
1) Is this project requested by the Department of Defense? The correct answer is NO.
2) Is this a project that was competitively bid among other potential suppliers? The correct answer again is NO.
3) Will the taxpayer own the rights to any successful product developed? Again, the correct answer, according to Sherwin-Williams’ own brochure for this project is NO.
4) How do we know that this particular company is the best supplier? There are many great paint companies in America, how do we know that Sherwin-Williams is the right company to do this job? Answer never given.
5) What investigations have they done to ensure that this is the right price? Is $2 million just an arbitrary amount? Answer never given.
For those of us in Congress fighting to reform our earmark process, this video is a good example of where we need to start.

__Did those microbial agents attack Murtha's memory. He did not have a substantial answer to any of the questions asked.Kind of looked like a child trying to expain why he stole the change of his parents dresser.I will send this out to my family, and friend to read, and view. |

Please keep it up.
Loved how Murtha went into bully mode.

Your doing a good job Congressman and I hope you keep it up. |

...for fighting the good fight on behalf of the American people. |

This video opened my eyes about how much money is wasted by politicians in Congress.
To actually see the appropriation of earmarks designed to do nothing but boost a politician's chance for re-election defended by a blithering fool is too much to take.
Thank you Mr. Campbell for being so thorough in your attempt to shed light on the shenanigans going on in Washington. |

My blog, kgk.townhall.com has many of the same things that you rightly said. I saw the debate on CSPAN and my wife and I laughed at how the mean ole smirk on Murtha's face never lightened up since he obviously did not know anything about that earmark.Having heard you on Hugh's program on KRLA, I was delighted to put a face with a voice and a calmness that needs to be projected but with power, truth and fire. The GOP doesn't do that enough John and they need to fire back every day as the Dems do since the MSM already is brainwashing voters daily. |

The only good thing about having the dems in charge is that so many that we would NEVER have gotten to know rise to prominence. Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and, most especially, Murtha. Now Pelosi probably doesn't have anything to worry about since she represents the country's only open-air mental asylum. But the others come from states where a great many NORMAL people live. It's a sad fact that most people don't know WHO their reps and senators are, even as they vote for them. I am happy to think that the dems aren't learning any better NOW than Tom Daschle did.
By all means Mr. Murtha...keep flappin' yer jaws and let people see what you REALLY are. |

Term limits are the answer! |

Keep it up! By the by, when the full report comes out that the Haditha massacre was a lie, you guys must nail Murtha to the wall. He threw a bunch of soldiers under the bus without any facts. |

Mr. Campbell,
My most sincere thanks for holding their feet to the fire like you did. This is not an us versus them thing, rather, it is a policy shift that is badly needed in Congress.
We need more like you who will stand up to the good ole boy system, who will question the old way of doing things and bring about change by stirring up debate on Capitol Hill.
It is apparrent that the old players don't like to be questioned about the way things are done on their turf, but as John Q. Citizen, I wish we had more like you there.
Please, keep up the good work.
Take Care in all that you do.

Good job on the Club for Growth RePork Card. The floor debate shows Mr. Murtha cannot defend these earmarks, they are flat out pork and should be illegal. As an Arizona State Senator, I have used the same manuver on the floor to try to remove pork from the budget and get the members on record voting for pork. My results have been the same as your's, but we must continue the battle to give the people hope that we can someday take back our government. |

Rep. Campbell,
Thank you for your efforts. Maybe you could get together with other California Reps. (Mine is Andrew McCarthy)and start pushing back a little harder as a group. I am remembering the Gang of Fourteen, of course they were senators but we can all forgive them for being in the Poo-Bah Brigade.
I contact McCarthy regularly. Is There anything else we can do? Contact me if you would like.
Please give Jeff Flake an "atta boy" as well. and don't let the bastards wear you down. Stay sharp!!

Keep it up, don't give up! The only solution to the likes of Murtha and Kennedy and I could go on, is - term limits!!!! |

Sorry to say Rep Murtha is from my home town district in Johnstown PA. That's where I'm from. I'm happy to say I'm now in Rep John Campbell's district in Irvine CA. I'm also ashamed that, like Murtha, I'm a life-long Democrat but don't vote that way. Not unlike like Mr. Campbell I'm in the tax business as an enrolled agent. I collect taxes from delinquent tax payers. Unlike Mr. Murtha who is a proponent of reckless spending the taxes I help collect. They could be better spend elsewhere. I enjoyed the debate over the Microbial earmark and would like to have seen the full remarks of the gentleman from Arizona who was about to speak in defense of the questions Mr. Campbell posed to Mr. Murtha. I'm sorry that wasn't shown. Keep it up, Sir. |
