The Two Campaigns At Summer's Start
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 8:56 AM
Accounts in the Los Angeles Times and the Wall Street Journal provide insights into the two presidential campaigns as they enter the traditional quiet-before-the-storm weeks between July 4 and the convention.  Both campaigns have enormous challenges, but the very tight race provides plenty of time for either or both of them to reach peak performance just as the fall campaign opens in Denver and St. Paul.

The Journal's John Emshwiller and Christopher Cooper report on Team Obama and note that the "Democratic fissures come as evidence is mounting that Clinton supporters aren't falling easily into the Obama camp."  Nearly a third of Clinton primary voters are telling pollsters they won't turn out to support Obama in the fall, and the bitterness over perceived sexism runs deep.  "One high-profile example: pundits both on TV and in print referred to Sen. Clinton's laugh as a 'cackle,'" the article continues.  "Separately, a joke by comedian Chris Rock comparing the candidate to the knife-wielding madwoman played by Glenn Close in the film 'Fatal Attraction' was picked up and parroted by others in the mainstream media."

Of greatest concern: The more than 300 individuals who each raised a hundred grand or more for Hillary.  Very few have switched over, and their commitment will be needed to supercharge Obama's controversial decision to break his word and fund the fall campaign with private donations.

The obvious dilemma for Hillary supporters is the fact that if Obama wins, Clinton  will never return to the Oval Office.  If he loses, she is the presumptive nominee against the76 year old John McCain if he chooses to run for a second term.

The Times' Andrew Malcom reviews the changes within Team McCain, including the staff additions and the expected return of media maestro Michael Murphy.

Malcolm suggests it is late in the day for a campaign overhaul, but the new environment of rapid, sometimes massive shifts in public opinion works in the GOP's favor, as does McCain's well established brand.  The public knows McCain, and there isn't going to be much need for "introducing" him.  There is a need for a relentless focus on security, energy, integrity and tax cuts as the campaign unfolds, and Steve Schmidt and his new lieutenants are providing just that as Malcolm details.

August will not be the "boring" month.

Summer of the future
I disagree on the "relentless focus" of the campaign. It should and must be on: the American economy (and that includes energy), education (and thereby, opportunity), concerns of the American people (cost of living, healthcare, social security, environment), and restoring American leadership in the world community. For these ambitious goals, Obama is the one.

Puma Supporter: No Flip Flopper Obama!!
I hope all Pro Hillary Blogs are sending the Obama Camp, Hillary, The corrupt gender-biased DNC and Media, and Obamabots a clear and strong message that we're not going to fall in line with this Charlatan, Flip Flopper, Lair Obama. We are not going to vote for Obama no way no how, we will vote for Mccain, Nader, or stay home before we give this fraud our vote. We are not listening to Hillary's unity speech, because true Hillary supporters are not stupid, we know that she's being pressured to endorse this fraud or risk being politically black balled by the gender-biased media, some Congress members and the DNC leadership.

Hillary did what she thought she had to do publicly to keep the DNC from damaging her political career even further, but as Pastor Manning says in one of his lateast Youtube videos that Obama is trying to use Hilllary just to help him win the Presidency and then after he's through with her, he will kick her to the curb like he did many of his former associates when they where no longer a Political asset of advantage to him. The DNC Leadership really did not care about Hillary from the beginning of this campaign season, that's why she lacked their support doing the primaries to become the party's nominee.

But in the end, I Pray that Hillary and her supporters have the last laugh in Denver, if the Superdelegates open their eyes and see that Obama is not the one to become our President, but instead realizing that Hillary is the most electible, experienced, and qualified to do the job of President starting "Day One" of stepping into the Oval Office, as opposed to Obama who's just full of hot air flip flops, lies, and beautiful deceptive speeches.

Brob,
You are confusing "deficit reduction" with "debt reduction". If your expenditures exceed your revenues, you have a deficit. If you stop spending as much, without changing your revenues, you have reduced your deficit, hence the term "deficit reduction". The statement made no claims about a surplus, which would be necessary for debt reduction.

That's "wtf" that means. Pay tuition and take a class. We're tired of schooling you for free.

Brob, Brob, Brob........
.....since you take up most of the comment section of this site for pro "Obama" propaganda, WHY don't you established your own site: Call it "the Obama drool" or "the Obama mouse slobber".

Honestly, many of your posts are excellent when considering you love/devotion for Obama. However, some are "off the wall": chronically condescending anyone/everyone who has a diverse opinion/ideological bent. I am the daughter, sister, and wife of those who served. Accordingly, I addressed another blogger for a distorted (out-of-context) lie that I am FED-UP seeing/hearing. It had nothing to do with you, however, you decided to attack me and go on a outrageous rant regarding KOREA......A country no one ever mentioned. My father was in WWII and Korea, sooo I personally do not need your book-$hit reiterations.......akin to "me Brob....I am the sage". Furthermore, do not try to shove this whimpy, anti-American, anti-Semetic, hate monger, et al (and wife) down everyones throat.

I respect your opinion regarding your political ideological view, but stop trying to negate, by your ranting crap,..everyone's else's. I apoligize, but, I am slightly angry as to the lies, distortions, condescensions, etc., etc., on July 4th. You must understand that my entire family are fierce patriots who DO NOT TALK THE TALK, THEY WALKED THE WALK........so stop the vile bull...and have a little respect!!!!!!!!

You are free to spew your venom because of my father, brother, and husband!!!!!!! So tone your toxicity to a minimum.....in reverence.
K.G. writes: Monday, July, 07, 2008 3:17 PM
Whoa, Bea!
You go, girl!

However, here's what I'm not sure you understand about Brob and the left. They are mortified that numbskulls like your wonderful family members would volunteer for the military.

It's clueless people like your family who keep the US military thang going. The left wants a weak military so the US will be cut down to size and quit causing trouble throughout the world.

Evidence of this is their refusal to allow military recruitment at high schools, colleges and even store fronts.

You need more? Just remember the General Betray-us ads. Or John Kerry's remark about getting stuck in Iraq if you don't do your homework.

At every turn they express disdain for the military, hoping that backwoods illiterates will quit volunteering and thereby save the world.

Every other nation or tribe glorifies their military so the warriors will be willing to fight to defend hearth and home. Not the the suicidal Obamination.

Go figure!

Apologies galore for the.......
.....misspellings, grammatical errors (present vs. past tense distortions, etc.) vs. my previous post below. I seethed (unexpressed anger) for three days (from July 4th to-date) and finally just blithered blindly on, and on.

Please forgive my rant; but, I LOVE this wonderful country. Anyone who constantly condescends our freedoms, liberties, etc...drives me to distraction. My family's investment and sacrifice as to every American's ability to be unencumbered and free, although minimal vs. the sacrifices of ALL our WONDERFUL MILITARY PERSONNEL (past and present), is/are an impacting force in my life. Therefore, DO NOT disparage THIS COUNTRY. Or the quasi "Tazmanian Devil" slowing emerges!!!!!!!!!

You know......on the day (during Bush's trip to Africa), I was watching (on CNN) the l-o-n-g lines of the beautiful, young African mothers waiting for hours for "a single (one)" mosquito net so their child could be protected from contracting malaria.....Michelle Obama was addressing a group @ Villanova University in Philadelphia spewing that this is a "mean Country".......???? What??? She and Borack have a wonderful life. Would they change it to go back to Borack's homeland and live? NO WAY!!!!! I am a Pennsylvanian.......and I am an apparent, quintessential "bitter clinger". Hey, we love and respect our Country and the Constitution!

Bea writes: Monday, July, 07, 2008 3:46 PM

I usually do not write much on any site; however, I can get crazy when I see the quintessential ingrates.......spewing their acrimonious hostility for this fabulous Country.

No Balanced Budget, No Iraq
McCains promises of balancing the budget are no more valid that the comments we've heard for years promising to do the same thing - and, of course, it never balanced.

To start with, the budget is over $500 B out of whack this year. Secondly, the "so-called savings on Iraq and Afghanistan" is a myth. Afghanistan is expanding as a war, Iraq will decline, but the costs of re-equiping the forces we have had in Iraq, as well as the medical costs related to the forces, will absorb any possible savings of not having them in Iraq. At the same time, costs of the other entitlements are increasing more rapidly than our increase in tax rvenues. Then, you have the cap and trade nonsense with it's ticked of $100 B to $200 B, followed by McCains promise to "expand" the military. It doesn't work.

And today, Maliki announced that the Iraqi government wants an agreement with the US to withdraw its forces, and the Foreign Minister commented that it will be 1 to 2 years. Which is, I might point out, closer to Obama's 16 months than McCains maybe by 2013. The net result is that the next President will not be fighting a war in Iraq, he will be overseeing the withdrawal of our forces from Iraq.

Bottom line? McCain's budget balancing is an empty promise and the war in Iraq will be a non-issue as McCain can no longer use it to burnish his terror fighting credentials.
hvs writes: Monday, July, 07, 2008 7:15 PM
If McCain has the stones to do it
He can balance the budget in three years easily by cutting the capital gains rate to 7.5% in year one, 5% in year two and 0% in year three; cutting the highest marginal rate on personal income to 30% in year one, 25% in year two and 15% in year three; eliminate the death tax completely.

Investment will surge, GDP growth will surge and tax receipts will surge. And he can increase defense spending.

hvs: Gitt Mitt...
...in there as VP and sell him as savior of the economy. Not that one man can do it, but getting someone who understands this stuff and is able to articulate it to the folks would be a great thing.

It should not be hard for Mitt to make the case that Obama's tax plans would be a disaster.

At this point I don't really care who pitches the tax relief. I liked Mitt, and he can certainly articulate it better than most. But somebody on the ticket needs to find some Reagan size cajones because he (Reagan) got it done in the middle of a severe recession and with Democrats in control of the House.

Reagan had a pair and was able to communicate directly with the people. I have an open mind, but I don't see anybody but Mitt able to do it.

Short of that, my husband and I are planning to jump off a cliff in 2010 to allow our kids to keep the family business and inherit what they need to keep it going.

That is Plan A. Plan B is for me to live forever. Should I pass, my heirs are instructed to mummify me, prop me up in a rocking chair a la Bates Motel and keep it a secret from the IRS I have assumed room temp.

Bea, A great American
Appreciate your courageous views.
Please, keep visiting HH's blog.
God Bless, and Keep safe all who sacrifice so greatly, and serve our courtry.
I am so fortunate to live in a small community, where we have quite a number of brave, who serve and I have the honor, personally, from time to time, to shake their brave loving hands, and thank them for their service. What a pleasure, just looking at their beautiful proud innocent shy smile. What a wonderful country.
God Bless you Bea, and your dear family.

Thank you and your family for the service to our beloved country.

Such simple distinctions and concepts are those you school the "Ignorant One" on. This Bjob twit is an exasperating observation in where our government schools have failed this country.

The Left and its Liberal brethren have all but ensured the dumbing down of the last generation or two of students. The work in reversing this is of sysphean proportions.

Obama supports faith-based initiatives..
...what a slap in the face to his Leftist base and all of the campaign funds they've poured into this "Change Agent".
He has indeed moved significant distance from his previous position on this. I guess he's decided he does need all of those who "cling to their guns and bibles" in their personal despair.
clarityseeker writes: Tuesday, July, 08, 2008 12:10 PM
Obama-Bush-Cheney...
...now share common "EVILS".

The Left has called Bush/Cheney "Evil" in "eviscerating" the freedoms of Americans while supporting surveillance techniques regarding FISA practices. Bush/Cheney have given telephone companies their good graces while requesting their help in carrying out international surveillance techniques on suspected terrorists.
The Left, Liberals, Progressives, Democrats, Victicrats have been resolute in castigating Bush/Cheney in these efforts.

OOOOOoooooooooooooops, now Barack Hussein Obama has "CHANGED" his position on these surveillance practices as they pertain to FISA.

WOW!

Now that does redefine his campaign of "CHANGE".

That does give new meaning to the concept of, "HOPE".

And without a doubt it is the "FRESHEST" thing we've seen from him in a couple of days.

The Left is writhing in pain over these events. Thanks for the entertainment value, Mr. Obama.

Sexist bias against Hillary
Sexist, sexist will it never end. If Obma wins you mentioned that Hillary will never occupy the oval office again. Why? She will only be 68 at the end of Obama's 2nd term. That is 4 years younger than Joh McCain is now and he is pursuing the oval office.

Such a sexist comment is not surprising but always discouraging. We have come so far but still...one step forwrd - two steps backwards.

At any rate, we are just waiting to see if Obma picks Hillary for the V.P. spot (which she deserves). What other individual can bring has much to the table as she can? If Obama does not pick her, we will vote for McCain, put up with him for 4 yers and in 2012 get Hillary elected this time. We are waiting Obama. We are just waiting.....
