Bob Barr Campaign Models Perot/Paul
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 5:28 PM

Via Marc Ambinder, here's the first strategy memo put out by Bob Barr's campaign manager:

FROM: Russ Verney Campaign Manager, Bob Barr '08
TO: Friends and Associates
RE: Political Assessment
DATE: May 19, 2008

These days, politics seems to revolve around polling and predictions. I'm not convinced it's the best use of anyone's time — especially for someone like me who's spent his whole life in full-time campaign activities — but consider this outline :

early October: 7% in national surveys
Mid October: wins televised Presidential debate
late October: 12% in national surveys
election day: captures 19% of national vote

That's what happened in a previous election I was involved with: Ross Perot in 1992. That could have been the case with Ron Paul if he had opted to run on a third party ticket.

I believe former Congressman Bob Barr has the same potential. Maybe better. Don't be mislead, however: I am no cheerleader by nature. But I do agree with our Senior Policy Advisor, Doug Bandow, in an e-mail I received from him yesterday:

"I've just read the early polling data and your election game plan — phenomenal. Congressman Barr is poised to have a huge impact on the public policy debates and political history. His will be no ordinary presidential campaign."

That's not going to happen without your involvement, but at this point I'm asking you to just to think about participating and to mull over the following ... November 4th is light years away. In terms of laying the foundation for a dynamic and influencial campaign, the pieces for Barr 2008 are already in place. Consider ...

America is swamped in Libertarian information:

Congressman Ron Paul's new book is the number one best-seller in the nation according to the New York Times
Neal Boortz has 4,000,000 radio listeners daily
On TV, John Stossel broadcasts such opinions as: "I am a libertarian in that I believe in limited government and as much individual freedom as possible."

Finally, you may not have heard this from many media pundits, but nearly 130,000 people — 16% of the Republican primaary turnout in Pennsylvania — got out of their easy chairs and voted for Ron Paul and against John McCain ... that was after John McCain had won the nomination.

Politically and ideologically, Bob Barr is plowing fertile ground.

It will take an articulate candidate and a powerful message to build the meaning of the Libertarian messages voters are receiving. We have both in the Barr 2008 campaign.

That's why we need your participation: your investment of time, talent, and financial resources is vital as the campaign builds, from the ground floor, the alternative to politics-as-usual.

Why are we wasting our time?
Just like with Ron Paul, we have already wasted too much time talking about Bob Barr. Libertarians are a well financed tiny fraction of the electorate. It has become fashionable to say "I am a Libertarian." When people REALLY learn what the party stands for, they quickly realize that they are full of s--t!

Most Republicans would love to see the IRS abolished, but Republicans agreeing with Libertarians pretty much ends with taxes and welfare.

Libertarians are pro-abortion (including partial-birth); are opposed to all zoning i.e., they would allow a tiny beach town to turn into Wild Wood, New Jersey or the vacant lot next to your house to turn into a garbage dump; they want all public schools abolished; want all drugs to be legal (including cocaine); they would allow Iran and all other militant Islamic nations to build nuclear weapons without attacking them.

With opinions like those, it is no wonder Libertarians get less than 1% of the vote each Presidential election cycle.

Bob Barr might be getting 6% of the vote right now. Come Election Day 2008, that number will be below Ralph Nader's 1%.

Alot of repubs
will not chose for Barr for fear of throwing away their vote.He has to catch lightning in a bottle and grab the public's attention difficult task.I have been giving him a hard look and like most of what he stands for, however he never mentions immigration reform which is on the top of my priorities.

Mc Lame
I have been opposed to Mc Cain from the start. There is only three things for him to get my vote. Promise a fence in 1 year, pick a very conservative VP, and promise to run for only one term. Even then I will still have my reservations..
He wont.. so I wont. Many many conservatives will follow.
The cap and trade tells us a lot of what is ahead.

"sanctimonious drivel about his so-called "principles" - I've only seen cons say they will vote for Barr by default so where do you get that we are thrilled with him? the Stupid Party has left us no choice.

Tearing down an opponent still doesn't make the Great Exasperator look any better to me.

And Barr never did the one thing no party member should do: stab your fellows in the back AND front like McCain did.

Sorry, it always comes back to that...

Your candidate has proposed the biggest and most opaque bureaucracy ever: the cap and trade boondoggle. And he is doing it as America sinks into what might be a very long and deep recession. He is also a one-world-without-borders global corporatist. I guess he is a phony and a liar too so what are you going to do? You can't just stand there holding your nose forever. Cuts off circulation to the brain.

The RNC decided they wanted an amnesty candidate. The RNC sided with illegal aliens and their employers against American citizens. They will be responsible for the disaster that awaits them in November.

No Enforcement/No Votes!

Barr is a Phoney Loser
If Barr does to the country what Perot did to it in '92, then he is nothing more than a phoney, regardless of his supporter's sanctimonious drivel about his so-called "principles".

Barr is lying when he pretends there is no real choice between McCain and Obama. McCain has one of the best records on fighting waste and earmarks, has never voted to increase taxes, sponsored legislation to ban the Fairness Doctrine, and stood against judges making laws from the bench.

Obama explicitly wants to raise taxes, has a lousy record on earmarks, wouldn't fight a democratic congress if they tried to implement a Fairness Doctrine, and would appoint liberal judges.

So basically, Barr is a liar.

He's also a phoney. He used to be an anti-drug warrior, now he lobbies for marijuana rights. He authored the Defense of Marriage Act, now he supports judges overruling the will of voters in California.

And what a pathetic campaign memo. Who wants to be in a party where "victory" means getting less than 20% of the vote? How stupid! Only a delusional idiot thinks they can affect policy by losing badly.
ScarletPimpernel writes: Monday, May, 19, 2008 8:35 PM
go Barr
I'd love to see the Great Exasperator end up 3rd. I still think that McCain beats Obama. Unless Obama doesn't speak from now until November. And he gets Michelle to hush up.
Virginia Patriot writes: Monday, May, 19, 2008 8:29 PM
It Is Possible
To at least make McCain third place. Conservatives outnumber liberal Republicans. If Barr came out strongly for Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement, he could win.
Pasadena Phil writes: Monday, May, 19, 2008 6:52 PM
People forget
That Ross Perot was actually ahead in the polls when he mysteriously dropped out of the race. The conventional explanation is that he never intended to win and panicked when he saw he might do so. Regardless, he later re-entered the race and pulled down 19.6%. It was a testament to his common sense message and the disillusionment broadly felt by conservatives at the Bush administration in 1992. Today, we conservatives are deeply and profoundly angry in addition to being disillusioned. Add to that the fact that neither party is promoting a clear, common sense message (Obama: "Change"?, McCain: "Just Because"?), Barr could very well repeat that experience. People like to say that Perot did well because of his money. Wrong. Money helps get the message out but it doesn't compensate for the fog that is being spread this year.

Maybe Perot has good reason to fear being president. Barr doesn't. And if he has a clear conservative Republican message, he could very well win. In any case, all he needs is about 3% to derail McCain and 5-10% to deny the winner any mandate.

There are two major mistakes the GOP is making currently:

Underestimating Obama

Underestimating the depth and breadth of conservative anger and disillusionment.

We might hold our noses again but it won't be for neither McCain nor Obama.
