J-Pod On NAFTA And The Dems
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 9:13 AM
Don't miss John Podhoretz's succinct assessment of the Clinton-Obama anti-NAFTA rhetoric.  Bottom line: Both of them will abrogate NAFTA at exactly the moment the United States embassy moves to Jerusalem.

yes disingenuousness but,
Which is the winning position in Ohio?

McCain - Voted for ALL free trade agreements which pit labor in Ohio against 50 cent an hour labor in China and other 3rd world nations. Ohio labor competing with 50 cent an hour 3rd world labor is good for Ohio. You get cheap stuff in return.

Obama - Against pitting Ohio labor against 50 cent an hour labor in China and other 3rd world nations. Not good for Ohio.

BOs and HCs attacks on NAFTA
are meant to be directed towards the southern surplus-of-labour Mexican partner in the deal. Canada just got slagged as a sort of collateral damage. Of course it isn't just Mexico and NAFTA that is providing tough competition to Ohio's slow-to-reform heavily-unionized manufacturing sector, but the entire world - China and probably more importantly english-speaking India being the most conspicuous countries.

Some facts that many reading this may not be aware of re: Canada's trade relations with the US:

1. It's about oil and gas stupid. All the other products we trade in pale in comparison both in Dollar value (save autos and auto parts which is a sector that is pretty much trade neutral i.e. exports = imports) and in strategic importance.

2.Canada is the US's largest supplier of oil.

3. It also arguably has the world's largest oil reserves. The Alberta and Saskatchewan oilsands have proven reserves of approx 250 BB bbls and with the commercialization of revolutionary technolgies such as this - http://www.petrobank.com/hea-thaitechnology.html - those reserves could prove out to be 10 to 20 times greater - 2.5 to 5 trillion bbls. (BTW - the world has only recently consumed its first trillion bbls).

4. It is adding to its productive capacity by about 250,000 BBL/day every year. the technologies cited in point 3 above could see that rate of increase doubled or trebled ten to fifteen years from now.

5. If the US is serious about becoming less dependent on oil from the middle east and other despot-run areas then Canada is the KEY to doing so. ANWAR is insignificant by comparison.

points cont'd
6. Screwing around with NAFTA and otherwise providing doubt as to whether the oil will be able to flow freely from the North to the South (i.e. being obstructionist on other much less significant points of trade contention such as softwood lumber and beef imports) is definitely not in the US's national security interest.

7. Further to the points above: If you want to really stick it to the islamo-fascists and the russians and Hugo Chavez, the best way to do so is encourage Canada to increase its oil production as fast as possible so as to crush the price of oil and thus the economies of the above.
