"What would you do?" to make America look horrible...

Former Migrant Worker - ABC Prime-time Anchor

For the last week or so I had seen the promos for the new ABC reality series, "What would you do?"

The concept was one that intrigued me given my long time fascination with the moral dilemmas of life. In fact it is just these types of dilemmas that my radio show covers weekly, in our attempt to encourage those who listen to 'Xtreme' Radio to hopefully act with more clarity in the situations they face in life.

So after the season premiere of the ABC version of SCRUBS, I decided to stick around for the season premiere of "What would you do?"

Which should have been titled, "Why does America suck so much?"

John Quinones, this week's host, picked two subject matters for tonight's show. Response to how a deli in Linden, New Jersey  treats two vocally belligerent illegal aliens who are being denied service, and what "Ugly Americans" look like in Paris.

In the New Jersey scenario the belligerent illegals, and the waiter behind the counter saying horrifically mean spirited things to them were all actors, the gig was to see how others reacted.

For the most part, most didn't react.

One African American, who finally does react, repeatedly encourages the illegals to "leave and go somewhere else" to get their breakfast sandwich and coffee. At one point the African American male is then busted and run through the wringer for saying what he said.

The white wash that was made in the piece however was infuriating.

While one or two Americans out of a hundred might believe that illegal aliens shouldn't get service in a deli, nearly 80% of Americans out of that same hundred would believe that illegals should not come here illegally. In addition they also hold that we as a nation should do more to encourage a legal immigration policy across the board.

At one point Quinones makes the inference that he was once a migrant worker and had received poor treatment. The red flag in my mind was that Quinones in his "gotcha" moments kept trying to make it seem that the American public confuses LEGAL immigrants, and migrant workers, with illegal immigrants.

The ABC News cameras even shot B-roll footage of a street corner in Linden where at least 40-50 illegals gathered that day to find work in the morning.

Americans DON'T confuse the issue of those who have come to this country out of a love for it and a desire to become AMERICAN vs. those who skirt the laws, slip across the borders, smuggle people, drugs, and other contraband in (and also pose a threat to our national security.)

John Quinones owes the American public an apology for using his platform to paint Americans as xenophobic. It was a lie from the pit, and he should know better.

His second topic was to take two "rednecks" and plop them down in Paris as the two most overly stereotypical figures ever conceived. The entire exercise was meant to poke fingers in the eyes of Americans for not being more cosmopolitan and French in their behaviors.

While this excruciatingly hate-America tripe was running, what was merely brushed over was that as the secret cameras rolled in MANY instances it was actually fellow American tourists who would correct Tweedle Dee and Dum in their Parisian exploits.

If John Quinones is actually interested in watching human behavior undergo the temptation of moral dilemmas, let's hope he chooses honest situations, with actual practical application to human behavior in the future. However seeing how he delighted in producing pieces tonight that even again compared "Bush" to "Hitler" he just lost what little journalism credibility he had.

Put another way:
M. Quinones lui-meme est une honte pour la pratique du journalisme et devrait etre retrograde au role de substitution dans les jours a venir.

Irony or Poetry?
JQ seems himself conflicted.
I grant him the conflict is an AMERICAN creation. Permitting illegal status is ignored & therefore: ALLOWED!!

But most people don't care when it does not affect them.

So, I find his piece with poetic Irony to show Ugly Americans in France when not conforming to French ways and "just people" when only speaking Spanish.

The piece is shallow. As shallow as JQ claims Americans to be. JQ learned English. Living in San Diego, I live the disregard for the rule of law daily by foreign nationals. One Peruvian national I spoke with asked me why your government permits criminals & bad people into your country. (Castro dumping prisoners into the US, etc.)

One one hand is the do onto others & on the other is when in Rome. For me? The golden rule shows the disrespect & desperation that exists for people to do what they want. If the Constitution means something, stand up for it!
Let's see what happens with Obama's relative that is living here in the US illegally. Obama said "she should obey the law" & he also said "we should learn Spanish".

An Ivy league degree does not mean everything...

Disgusting
K-Mac assumes that the men are illegal based on nothing other than that they speak Spanish. K-Mac's claim that they "They repeatedly had the actors SAY they were" illegal is a blatant lie.

I help teach ESL to adults. My class is the beginners' class, level 1A. Over the years I've met hundreds of Spanish speaking people. Some have asked me to help them with their correspondence from INS and USCIS. I saw the documents that confirmed that they were in the country legally.

Corina is one student. She is a permanent resident married to a U.S. citizen. She had a job bussing tables at a family restaurant. She has a two year old daughter, Ashley, who has beautiful brown eyes and is very charming. Delia was in the first class I ever taught. She works at a local restaurant. People have lined up in the rain waiting for a table for Sunday brunch where she works. She brought in some BBQ ribs and grilled shrimp for me one time. Very sweet. Pascual was the class clown, a very nice guy. We had a party, and he shucked about 50 ears of corn so the women could make tamales. Then he stuck around and washed every single dish after the party. He didn't leave until the kitchen was clean as a whistle. He's legal too.

Some came to church with us and even became Christians. Some might be illegal, but you can't tell by just their appearance. Thinking that K-Mac endorses refusing to serve these people at a restaurant is disgusting. At least the black guy repented after being rebuked by Quinones.

Garbage show
I caught a piece of this piece of garbage and guess what? The obnoxious American had on a baseball jersey with Bush on the back. Bush is on his way out of office and they're still bashing him at every turn. Read more on Bush bashing at, http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com/search/label/Bush

From Texas and not taking it anymore!
Ok, wait, let me see if I get it....Paris, France...good. Paris, Texas??? Uh...not so good. This is just another Bush bashing using Europeans stereotyping of Texans to further it along. What if they were portrayed as being Californian, fat,"ignorant" and wearing Obama t-shirts? No story there.
If this kind of hit piece was done using stereotypical african-americans or asians rather than Texans, there would be law suits and front page outrage in the media.

Nice
It's nice to see Mr. McCullough take a break from bashing homosexuals.

That said, shows like this are stupid to begin with. These are not controlled sociological experiments, they are the modern version of candid camera, a horrible warping of "what would you do for a Klondike bar".

McCullough was right to criticize this.

Congress
Congress with Reid & Pelosi are doing a splendid job of making America look bad! And they don't need a script!

ABC- clueless media hacks
I spent many years in Europe while deployed. I consider myself a Redneck, but only as far as I come from and live in the mountains of N.C. I interacted with the French, Brits, Spanish, Egyptians, Italians, and made many friends. I found that you receive what you give, I never had one single incident anywhere, were folks treated me bad because of were I was from. Anyone can manufacture hate, but it takes Redneck to have fun no matter were they go.

I saw the preview

and thought immediately of the time when they were going to try and set people up at nascar races...

I saw the teaser before the program started and noticed that there wasn't going to be any reverse discrimination piece against Americans, then I thought, hey...Quinones really hates America.

That's why ABC and Quinones suck a box of rocks.

The same.
My wife, children and I are Texans who have lived and worked all over the world: London, Sydney and now Geneva.

News flash: people are the same everywhere. There are wonderful Americans and terrible Americans; wonderful Brits and terrible Brits; etc., etc.

All national stereotypes are hogwash based upon
deep ignorance, bigotry and racism.

xenophobic
zenophobic should read xenophobic unless you mean fear of zen.

And thank you for this review because the show sounds dreadful. I will now avoid it.

Not in the link you provided
In the link that you provided, the only actor who refers to them as illegal aliens was the guy behind the counter.

Uh Dave...
They repeatedly had the actors SAY they were...

It was manufactured zenophobia...

I enjoyed Scrubs
I didn't watch the hate America show. I can get that anywhere. I know a lot rednecks but I can't say I ever knew one who wanted to visit France.

There is no deer season there and I understand the bass fishing is lousy.

Question
How could you tell that the men were illegal?

Quinones/ABC trashing America
Affirmative action employee Quinones trashed whatever was left of his and ABCs journalistic integrity with this freakish and phoney distortion of "typical" American conduct on both sides of the Atlantic.

I turned the propaganda piece off when they had the two "redneck" actors purportedly from Paris, Texas dress up in matching "Bush '08" sweatshirts, inferring that boorish American tourists are fat, loud, rude, and worst of all, Republican!

If they were at all honest, they simply could've hired Rosie O'Donnell and Joy Behar, dropped them off anywhere in Paris, had them act as they normally do, and turn on the cameras. Instant "Ugly American" incident, sans acting. But that wouldn't reflect well on the Manhatten Island elite image, would it.
