3rd Ballot Count Totals
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 1:58 PM
Steele 51
Duncan 44
Dawson 34
Anuzis 24
Blackwell 15

Another big win for Team Steele--he jumped into the lead on the 3rd ballot.

Duncan continues to lose ballots. No movement on Anuzis and Blackwell. Dawson gains 5, which shouldn't be dismissed. 5 ballots is a big deal in a race this close

Now for some updates on the scene here at the RNC Winter Meeting:

As you might expect, there's a lot men in suits running around here. It's a little chaotic in between ballots. People break out of the main room to talk, lobby, smoke cigarettes and everything else that people do at these sorts of things.

Not only is the Winter Meeting a place for important party work, it's a place for members to catch up with each other, figure out future plans and strategize.

There's lots of people watching, too. Fox News's Carl Cameron is chatting with members, CNN's GOP commentator Leslie Sanchez tip-toed out of the main ballroom on her standby heels for a phone conversation.

Press folks stalk the candidates every move. Lots of talk on Twitter about Blackwell chatting with Steele in the hallway. Prompts wild discussion about a potential "alliance."

So, all that said, reporting on the Winter Meeting is exciting, but it's also a little like reporting on a high school prom.

How many PAC's have you heard of
Allen,

I didn't even know until yesterday that most politicians had PAC's. And yes I have heard of GOPAC...like you I hear of the ones that are formed by the politicians that I like. Steele may not be my favorite but he and Erlich did start turning our economy around (which O'Malley has proptly reversed) so that we were getting out of debt.
Allen Caeden writes: Friday, January, 30, 2009 2:55 PM
NO NOT STEELE!
If Steele is elected the Republican Party will run as efectively as Steele's GOPCA. Oh what you never heard of GOPAC? Well that is because it is a joke of a PAC and has not accomplished a damm thing. You want an RNC Chairman like this?

I got beat...
TXGOP I was just getting ready to blast Frank. As a resident of Maryland, I thought that he should be corrected. Let me tell you Maryland was in much better condition while Erlich and Steele were in office. Now our income tax has increased and our sales tax has increase and I haven't seen any benefits out of it at all except we have a Govenor O'Malley who has a harder time with public speaking than President Obama does with giving a speach without a teleprompter.

1. Steele is pro-abortion with deep tis to planned parenthood.

2. Please go look up his comments from Last year's Black State of the Union.

If you have facts that contradict either of those points then please presnt them at your leisure.

Governor, senator, whatever-HE LOST. Only th GOP would appoint somebody who lost their election!

Katon dawson is closing the gap and is neck and neck with steele. My money is on him.

Maybe you should do some homework. Steele lost a race for US Senate, not the governorship. Prior to that he was Lt. Governor of Maryland so my info is correct. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

What issues do you think he is moderate on? Or do you just assume that Black Republicans are moderate?
Frank writes: Friday, January, 30, 2009 2:33 PM
TXGOP
do your homework-steele lost his bid for governor and is a moderate. Please do your homework.
TXGOP writes: Friday, January, 30, 2009 2:28 PM
Teflon Don
Steele has shown that he can win in a blue state when he was elected Lt. Governor of Maryland. His ability to articulate conservative beliefs made him a rising star in the GOP when Obama was still shaking down businesses as a community organizer.

From what I know about him he doesn't seem like a moderate and I think he would be a good choice for RNC Chair.
Jabba the Rush writes: Friday, January, 30, 2009 2:22 PM
Didn't
Rush Limbaugh recently scolded MSNBC for hiring a black anchor shortly after Obama won the presidency- stating they were putting the man, I think his name is Carlos, on the air because he looks kind of like Obama. So what are Rush's thoughts on Steele? Are the RNC about to pick a black man because Obama won? Are we supposed to root for Steele to succeed or do we want him to fail? Should we give him respect just because he is a black man? Tell us oh great mighty fat one.

Duncan drops out
Duncan just withdrew from the race.
Frank writes: Friday, January, 30, 2009 2:06 PM
uh-well
Steele is a moderate-which I think is great-but how are all the Palin heads going to react with a Pro-choice/"I'm a black man first-Republican second" Chairman?

Perhaps few actually heard Steele's speech at the Black State of the Union Last year.

I am glad to see the party moderate but doesn't this set th stage for the confrontation we all thought might never come? How will ven mor disenfranchised social conservative react?

Hmmmmmmmmm
