Gaining His Religion: Michael Stipe <3s Huckabee?
Posted by: Mary Katharine Ham at 11:55 AM
Behold, the power of likeability.
Said the R.E.M. frontman, “I've never seen the guy [Huckabee] talk, not even online. I have never seen him talk for 30 seconds...[and] he's really charming. I instantly wanted to call [Generation X author] Doug Coupland and say 'OK, project one year into the future for me: what the hell does this mean?' Because he's a creationist, he's a Baptist minister. I can't think of probably a single issue in which I am even remotely in the same universe as that guy.and yet, he was kind of charming and.self-deprecating. He was actually kind of a good sport, and funny, and I don't know what that means. Maybe it's a good thing that's he's being lauded right now by the right. He's an evangelical. May God bless all living creatures but my god, how weird."
The famously liberal singer known for his vegetarian tastes and intentionally ambiguous sexuality is charmed by the Huck? Although I will say that, from what I know of him, Michael Stipe is not as reflexively anti-evangelical or anti-conservative as one might expect from the average rock star. When I lived in Athens, Ga., where the band got its start and where he continues to make his home, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he helped decorate for Christmas the church his parents attended and generally seemed like a genuinely nice and tolerant guy.

Still, for Michael Stipe to respond favorably to a question about Huck really is a testament to the governor's charm. No wonder he's riding a surge.

Shut up and sing!
Had to be said. Wanna take bets on whether 'Shiny Happy People' is a new campaign theme for Huck? Something tells me he'd like that song.

It's a testament all right
However, it's not a testament to Stipe; rather, it's a testament to Huckabee's liberalism.

McCain
Why hasn't antone commented on McCain's voting record, or lack of it as I see it. He says that he truely loves this country. So why doesn't he make more of an effort now to do his job as an elected official now.

Gaining His Religion
Maybe Sipe has figured out he is rich and the dem's candidates want to penalize his success, or perhaps Huckabee reminds him of Kevin Spacey.

Gaining His Religion
Maybe Michael Stipe has considered this; Huckabee has run a good campaign and has never backed away from saying who he is. He is proud of his faith and has not let anyone put him in a corner or in a spot. Huck will never "lose his religion" for the sake of getting votes.

Charm and Platitude...
That's all Huckabee seems to operate on. Use your religion to pander to christian voters and then get upset when someone asks you a religion question.
fatherinoklahoma writes: Friday, January, 11, 2008 8:10 PM
Religion is ONLY reason to vote for Huck
and conservatives are going to oppose him until he has the nomination -- then they may hold their noses and vote for him in the general election as the lesser of two evils.

The reason conservatives are pushing Romney is that of the three conservatives (Thompson, Romney and Hunter), Romney is their best bet for success and the man has the best resume.

How Funny!
The Huckster is nothing more than a religious Bill Clinton. The Clintons introduced him to politics through a meeting with Joscelyn Elders. Perhaps "Bubba" and the "Huckster" can do a duet on the Jay Leno show?........The GOP(Gutted Our Principles) has crashed!

brianakira, get over it
Everyone knows Hewitt likes Romney. So what? He has been open about it and he has made his argument, which is more than I can say about you. (evoking The People doesn´t count)

And Romney has some things going for him. It´s not as if the idea of supporting him was completely absurd.

Myself, I prefer Rudy Giuliani.

And I couldn´t care less about Stipe. He can have a christmas tree, be anti-conservative, a nice guy and a socialist all at the same time. Go ahead and nominate Huckabee. The people get what they deserve and they will get it good and hard.

Charm
Perhaps, Stipe was probably just trying to give an unexpected answer. An atheist finding a former Baptist preacher charming makes a surprising comment.

Something
Well Huck is a likable guy. That doesn't mean I'd ever vote for him (or any of the other "conservatives" running this year) but he and Obama are easily the most personable candidates running.

So I'm at least one evangelical christian from the South who won't be voting for Huck. If I had to pick it would be Thompson but grampa screwed around for so long about whether he was running or not he's never going to be taken seriously by most voters.
