Mike Huckabee Aims, Fires, Hits Foot Again
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 4:18 PM
From the New York Times:

On Thursday night he told reporters in Orlando, Fla.: “We ought to have an immediate, very clear monitoring of our borders and particularly to make sure if there’s any unusual activity of Pakistanis coming into the country.”

On Friday, in Pella, Iowa, he expanded on those remarks.

“When I say single them out I am making the observation that we have more Pakistani illegals coming across our border than all other nationalities except those immediately south of the border,” he told reporters in Pella. “And in light of what is happening in Pakistan it ought to give us pause as to why are so many illegals coming across these borders.”

In fact, far more illegal immigrants come from the Philippines, Korea, China and Vietnam, according to recent estimates from the Department of Homeland Security.

Three gaffes in less than 24 hours has got to b unsettling even to ardent Mike lovers.  You just can't make stuff up in the new media environment.

Missouri poliblogger 24rth State sums up ina post titled Huck Soup:

I'm sure Mike Huckabee is a swell guy, but in my eyes, he's a mixture of everything I didn't like about Bill Clinton and George Bush.

A big government conservative with a history of accepting gifts from donors, a compulsion to legislate morality, and an "aw shucks," personality designed to catch you off guard, right before you find yourself taxed more to get less freedom.

If our friends in Iowa could give us a hand, we could Chuck Huck January 3rd.

Constitution before Party line
Please vote as an American for the sake of America. Our country requires the people to be in charge of their government. Before you choose a candidate just remember that the last thing our country needs is politics as usual. Put our Constitution before our party line affiliations. No more lies, from the left or the right.

Briggsy
I'd rather think clearly about my vote versus "feeling good" about it. All kinds of crap feels good but is so baaadddd for you. I clearly think Huck is not the right guy for POTUS. You need a leader, whom are often hated simply because they are willing to do what others won't or send back to committee.
Patriotic Liberal writes: Friday, December, 28, 2007 7:13 PM
Romney is in trouble..
He has spent $80 million so far--much of it in IA and NH, with the idea that he would slingshot out of those two states. But despite all that money, he may not win either of them. Ouch. Hugh is famous for shilling for Mitt, but the reality is that--tens of millions later--he is in a world of hurt. This was supposed to be his moment of triumph, where he emerges from the pack with a decisive one-two in early January. So much for the best laid plans of men..

Paging Kos Kids
I think that the "establishment" has mistranslated Huck. Please put him in Kos Kid context.

I Wonder
I admit Hugh you are really wearing me out with your constant campaigning for Romney. He is acceptible as a candidate but I wonder if any other candidate is acceptable for you? I know that you are financially riding on Romney going far so you can keep selling your book, but I have done plenty of research on the republican candidates and I still think Huckabee is my preference. If he does not win the nomination I will support whoever does win. Hugh are you going to support anyone other than Romney for the nomination or are you too biased to Romney to accept other options?

A Lightweight RINO Endorses Romney

This from a conservative NH paper
In this primary, the more Mitt Romney speaks, the less believable he becomes. That is why Granite Staters who have listened attentively are now returning to John McCain. They might not agree with McCain on everything, as we don't, but like us, they judge him to be a man of integrity and conviction, a man who won't sell them out, who won't break his promises, and who won't lie to get elected.

Voters can see that John McCain is trustworthy. Mitt Romney has spent a year trying to convince Granite Staters that he is as well. It looks like they aren't buying it. And for good reason.

Romney will change his position to any sizable voter block that will guarantee him the nomination. If Iowa wants ag or ethenol subsidies, then that free market conservative champion Romney will ask how much they need (after carefully review with a team of experts on the topic). If that is not being "for sale," well then prostitutes just do what they do motivated by love.
Daniel writes: Friday, December, 28, 2007 5:38 PM
I Like Mike!

Please, let's stop criticizing our Governor Mike Huckabee. He's one of us.

Sure, he doesn't know much. Sure, he's wrong on many policy questions. And yes, sure, he's got ethical issues.

But everything will be fine once he's the nominee.

Vote for Mike!
Pasadena Phil writes: Friday, December, 28, 2007 5:38 PM
Joe
Romney "buy" an election? How about that he is "not for sale" like the other graft magnets? What was McCain's interest in the Keating Five again? I forgot. Everybody already knows about Rudy and Huck. Better for an honest man to "buy" an election than for unnamed masked men to buy politicians and their influence.
BorderBill writes: Friday, December, 28, 2007 5:29 PM
Huckabee
How is it that every post Hugh makes attracts the Romney haters?

Right now i'm pulling for Romney. But if he doesn't make it, Huckabee or Thompson.

I wonder if Rudy is the nominee if i'll find myself coming to Hugh Hewitts site every day to try and balance Hugh's positive cheerleading for Rudy with negative cheerleading, like so many do here for Romney?

Nah.

You are right Eichendorff
We do not know what is going to happen.

For what it is worth, I suspect Mitt may pull Iowa and New Hampshire out in close races. But this Huckasurge is because a sizable percentage of the GOP do not like Mitt Romney and I do not think it can be explained away with anti Mormon bias. For a guy who attacks Huckabee on his "Arkansas ethics" (which I agree are pretty bad) it does seem that Mitt Romney is is trying to buy an election:

"Since January 1, 2007, the former Massachusetts governor has spent well in excess of $80 million, including at least $17.4 million of his own money, paying media fees in excess of $30 million, salaries of roughly $16 million, and consulting payments of more than $15 million.

Among Romney's costly innovations this year has been putting more than 80 local conservative leaders in key states on his campaign payroll, in what amounts to a 21st Century revival of 'walk-around money.'" http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2007/12/28/mitt-romney-down- for-the-_n_78586.html

Now granted, that is the Huff Post talking. I take that analysis with a sack of salt. But I have concerns how the GOP is going to win the office in the general. Would I be upset seeing Mitt in the Oval Office. No, not really, I would greatly prefer seeing Mitt there than Hillary Clinton.

I am getting to the point now that other than John McCain (who may have alienated too many in the GOP to get the nomination) there is no one left to win the general. If Hillary is smart enough to bring Obama into her camp (let's hope she is not) she will be a very formidable candidate. And I would have likely been a Mitt supporter, but for his serial flip flops in trying to get elected.

Huck claimed
They caught 600 Pakistanis coming into the country this year. When asked where he got the info he fumbled and first said the CIA and then immigration dept. The storyline was that he is so weak on foreign affairs that he was told to make it into an immigration issue and that he was using immigration to shore up support with men he was losing.I said the other day that the hunting trip was to shore up men. Wow, this guy is a walking gaffe machine. I'll bet the Letterman and Leno writers must be slitting thier wrists over not being able to write material with this clown. Not ready for prime time doesn't even come close to describing Huck.

None of you know diddly squat what's going to happen.

It's difficult to express how stupid all the commenters here are who fancy themselves armchair political pundits.

It really gives me a good laugh.

Friday Mitten Alert

Although I concur with JM that MR is "in a tailspin", it will not be finally apparent till after the Michigan primary. That is the moment that Willard will know he is finished.

Have hope and next week will be good with MR winning Iowa before he crashes in NH and Michigan.

InTrade
National - MR (22.4) JM (18.8) RG (29) - pretty stable except JM is fast overtaking MR.

States - fairly quiet
Iowa - still shows MH by large margin
NH - MR back in lead
SC - biggest vote is for "who knows" - called the field
Mich - still MR
New - RG up by 10%
all other states RG far in front

Talk about a gaffe!
Hugh, don't forget about Mitt's little gem today....

"Mitt Romney again took the floor and told the small group this is a time of change for America. Then he said, I believe for the first time in Iowa, 'I’ve had the experience of changing almost everything I’ve touched.'

"Bold words, some might say, for a man who has been battling charges that he’s changed his positions along the campaign trial.

Wow. 'I’ve had the experience of changing almost everything I’ve touched.' Truer words could not be spoken.

Leaked video
There is absoulutly nothing new in that video. Part of it is like the one Fred Thompson used durring the YouTube debate and Mitt Romney easily smaked the charges down on that video. Frankly it made Fred look a little silly. John McCain is wise not to use the video.

Huckabee is giving America a lot of reasons not to vote for him. Will we listen?
Pasadena Phil writes: Friday, December, 28, 2007 4:41 PM
The one good thing about Huckleberry
No one can accuse him of being a graft dodger. Yeah, I know. Please send Mr. Huckabee my apologies.

This is why we don't need an ex-governor
It takes somebody like McCain, with experience dealing with national issues, to properly deal with the duty of national security. The view from the governor's mansion in any one state is just too limited.
