A Popular Proposal
Posted by: Michele Bachmann at 5:07 PM
Editor-in-Chief of Popular Mechanics magazine placed a great op-ed in the October 2008 issue: Why Offshore Drilling Can Bridge Gap to U.S. Energy Future.

“Where would a more sensible energy policy start? Pickens is on the right track with his plan to increase use of natural gas. And McCain's call to allow more offshore drilling would significantly increase production. Alternatives such as wind or solar look better by the day, and, indeed, every major energy plan stresses them. But, it will take decades for the alternative-energy infrastructure to match our needs. We must have those offshore oil and gas reserves to bridge the gap.”

Give it a read by clicking here.

As Republicans in the House have been saying, it's going to take an All-of-the-Above approach to solve this crisis. As we get ready for the Labor Day weekend, a time when Americans usually like to get in one last summer get-away, remember that these high prices we're paying for gasoline (and will soon be paying for heat), could be dramatically lower. If we increase our supply domestically while doing what we can to conserve, the prices will have no where to go but down.

What happened in 2001 to 2007???
The GOP was in control of the House, Senate and White House from Jan 2001 until Jan 2007.

Why wasn't this an issue then?

Could it be that they could not use it as a campain issue so it wasn't important?

They could have opened up all the drilling areas they wanted to during those 6 years but did not. I want to know why.

Michele -- can you tell me?

" And in decades' time, we COULD have possibly found the right alternative, funded it properly and have it up and running of our own volition. Thousands of jobs could be centered around the green energy and our economy thriving as a result---- "

I agree. That sounds like the way to go. McCain agrees too. Your description accurately describes his "all of the above" energy solution.

How about two of the above first?
Lets focus on two economically sound thrusts first. Oil and Natural Gas

As a voter I am NOT for giving government any more political rope until they solve the simple problem of increased domestic oil and natural gas production first.

When we have these domestic pipelines fixed, then lets talk about alternatives.

And I do not mean GOVERNMENT subsidized (with our tax dollars) alternatives. I mean economically self sustainable alternatives. Ones that private industry would be willing to invest in without any government handout.

The voters are about to clobber the DNC in November for their delay in solving the oil and gas supply problem. The politicians that survive had better sit up and pay attention that it's not politics as usual anymore.

There's a quality source

I'm glad MY congresswoman relies on a quality scientific journal like Popular Mechanics for her energy expertise. No wonder everyone looks to Michele for energy advice these days. Why, if it's not saving the incandescent bulb from extinction, she's citing a handyman's magazine as her source for energy policy. Michele is BRILLIANT!
Pennsylvania Voter writes: Thursday, August, 28, 2008 10:32 PM
Thanks Michele
Its not surprising that even a mainstream magazine like Popular Mechanics has enough common sense to recognize that the fix for the energy problem our country faces is very straight forward and obvious.

Popular Mechanics is primarily targeted to audiences interested in fixing things.

The DNC has chosen to dump common sense fixes along with their chances of success in November.

After Jan 1 2009 many DNC politicians will have lots of free time to read their Sierra magazine.

Only 67 days to go!

Why is Michele still pursuing this?
She's been promoting the need to drill in ANWR, starting now--and John McCain and the GOP itself have already decided it's not necessary or desirable.

Just this week, the GOP voted against including "drilling in ANWR" in the party's political platform. Maybe Michele still thinks it would make a difference in our gas prices--but the GOP platform committee doesn't, and neither does their presidential candidate.

And that's quite a slam-down for Michele Bachmann, since she's appeared on national television and local radio *assuring* the public that we *must* open up a national wildlife reserve for drilling. And it's a double-slam-down for Michele: because she's ON the GOP platform committee!

An Associated Press story reports that even though she is on the platform committee, she no longer attends its meetings (which is funny, because geographically she lives closer to it nearly all the other GOP members serving on it.)

I don't know, but maybe this is why 1700 top DC aides--—administrative assistants, press secretaries, legislative directors, and chiefs of committee staffs—identified Rep. Michele Bachmann as "the second most clueless member of Congress."
(The first most clueless was a Dem from Florida, God help her. But I'll bet Michele takes the title back from her, if she's re-elected this year.)

Monkey and others.
The Democratic energy plan:
1) Release 70 million barrels of oil from the SRP to reduce prices. There is only 700 million barrels so they can't release more than that.

2) Fund alternative energy like ethanol to use up our food for energy.

3) Push wind and solar power to solve the energy crisis.

Is that it?
Lets see.

1) A one time release of 70 million barrels will significantly reduce the price of gas but pumping 2 million barrels per day for 365 days a year will reduce gas prices only $0.02.

2) Food prices have soared as food demand has increased. Congress finally saw their "wisdom" there and repealed the requirements for ethanol.

3)Oppose the construction of wind farms, Kennedy comes to mind. Also, how many acres of real estate will need to be devoted to both of these technologies to produce a significant amount of energy?

Giselle
We don't need to pour any money into finding oil. The government would actually make money by getting leases and royalty payments from the evil oil companies. What would require billions of stolen dollars is alternative energy. Let the market sort it out for the best and cheapest alternatives.

One more point
With Gustav in the Gulf maybe you will realize the idiocy of only drilling in one location. If we drilled off the east coast, west coast and the Rockies one storm would not send gas prices soaring as our only source of oil is about to be shut down for a few days.
