DRILLING VICTORY

From the Hill this morning:
Democrats Concede to GOP Demands Not to Extend Energy Bans in CR: “Two parties that started September headed for a bitter clash that could have shut down the government are now preparing for a quiet departure as each tries to shift into campaign mode. Democrats have given in to GOP demands to lift a decades-old ban on expanding offshore drilling, paving the way for must-pass legislation to keep the government running after Oct. 1. By conceding to the GOP demands over oil drilling, Democrats are seeking to blunt the campaign slogan that they are standing in the way of lower gas prices.” Note: This is not the "sham" energy bill the House Republicans have been blasting. This is a congressional ban on offshore drilling that must be renewed every year. This year, however, they are not going to renew it. They are going to let it expire--which means it will be legal to drill offshore and explore shale in the Rocky Mountains....at least until Congress returns after November, or January.
The ban will expire while Congress is on recess, again, for the November elections. Dem leadership plans to send everyone home on September 26 for the November elections and it unclear if they will be returning for a "lame duck" session after the elections.
Of course, when they do come back they can pass a law to put prohibitions on drilling back in place, which the Democrats would probably like to do if Obama wins. Then they won't have to deal with any Bush vetoes.
On the other hand, if McCain-Palin wins, they may have to sign a more expansive energy bill than they think.

I think H. Con 417 drafted by Congressman Thaddeus McCotter is excellent. He wants to keep Congress IN SESSION until a comprehensive energy solution is enacted, which includes opening up the Outer Continental Shelf as well as ANWR. This resolution already has 93 co-sponsors on it. How come the Democrats want ANOTHER vacation... when they will have worked only 14 days in five months and still get paid from the American taxpayers dollars?! From August-December 2008, the Democratic Congress plans to work 14 days, 13 if they take tomorrow (9/19) off, which I am certain that they will. This is ridiculous! The energy bill that the House passed two days ago was a complete sham... which even the Democratic Senate called "dead on arrival". Something has to be done to force the Democratic House to rethink their energy plan. Congressman McCotter's resolution for keeping the House in session in order to pursue and enact an energy bill that will benefit the AMERICAN PEOPLE, is necessary in a time where economic and energy crisises are plaguing the American public! |

I thought Palin was going to get Johnny to "Drill, drill, drill".
(crickets chirping)
Expect her to have just as much influence when Ol' John goes across the aisle to advance the Democrats agenda as he ahs been doing for years.
Enjoy your knives to the back if you get him elected! |

So no, The Hill is not referring to that sham bill by the Democrats. There has been a standing ban on offshore drilling. It will expire, I believe on October 1st, if the Congress does not renew it. They are not going to renew it. The door will be wide open to drilling on the OCS(Outer Continental Shelf). Amanda does mention that the ban may be reinstated next year if Obama wins. I wonder if that would affect leases granted before the new ban goes into effect. |

... and make viable finds while the sun is shining! |

is not the Hill referring to the bill that allows for drilling offshore more than 50 miles out? Ninety percent of the energy on the outer continental shelf is inside of 50 miles. Does the Hill and the Dems think they can fool the American public on this. It is a sham and the American people will figure it out. |
