Still Waiting for the Civil Libertarians
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 12:39 PM
Missouri Governor Matt Blunt has released a statement denouncing the partisan Obama prosecutors and sheriffs in St. Louis and St. Louis county who are trying to suppress criticism of their candidate by threatening to prosecute anyone who releases what, in their view, is a "misleading" ad about him.  (Here's my original post on this matter from Friday.)

Governor Blunt rightly calls it an "abuse of law for intimidation" -- and it is, indeed, one of the most overtly totalitarian efforts to chill free speech that I've seen in my lifetime.

Where are all the civil libertarians and lefties who have spent the last seven years bemoaning unproven "violations" of rights by the Bush administration?  Surely they don't believe that terrorists deserve a more staunch defense of their rights than Obama critics do of theirs.

Update Now the prosecutors are backing down, with the help of the reporter who originally presented the story.  They're claiming that they just intend to "set the record straight" about misleading claims, and that they don't intend to prosecute anyone.

But listen to the report (linked again here) which aired on St. Louis' KMOV, the city's CBS affiliate. Here are the newcaster's exact words:  The Barack Obama campaign is asking Missouri law enforcement to target anyone who lies or runs a misleading TV ad during the presidential campaign.   It says that these "truth squads" of prosecutors and sheriffs have been constituted at the request of the Obama campaign.  Why limit the truth squad to law enforcement personnel -- unless one wants to intimidate one's critics, and convey the impression that prosecutions can and will ensue?

Furthermore, the reporter himself says of the prosecutors, "They also say they plan to respond immediately to any ads and statements that might violate Missouri ethics laws."   And now they want us to believe that they plan to "respond" to violations of "Missouri ethics laws" simply by holding a press conference, or something?

This moment for the civil libertarians on the left is what the Monica Lewinsky scandal was for the feminists.  When feminists took up for Bill Clinton -- who clearly sexually harassed a young intern in his employ -- it became clear their objections to Justice Thomas had nothing to do with substance (i.e. the treatment of women in the workplace).  It was all about politics.

Now, if the lefties remain silent, it will be clear that all their hand-wringing about the alleged civil rights abuses of the Bush administration has nothing to do with concern for the Constitution -- and everything to do with their political agenda.

Interesting, isn't it?
If the shoe was on the other foot, the lefties would be howling like they had something stuck in a wringer. It is horrid! At least now we know exactly where they stand on free speech.

Those who think this is ok--we will remember who you are, and we will remind you when the situation comes up.

At least we know prior to the election what America will be like if we have a President Obama (God forbid). The MSM will cover for him as long as they can, and then there will come a tipping point. That will be a very unpretty moment for Mr. Obama.

MARXIST vs. WAR HERO
Isn't it IRONIC! In the year 2008 we have a Marxist from the Chicago Political Machine embraced by the supposedly Democrat Party running against a true War Hero.

The world is Upside Down.

A news flash that will never be seen
Comrade King liberal, I am sure you support the socialist state of the government telling you what you can or cannot watch on television. We've already seen the MSM leaning that way. Here is your truth in reporting...
Anyone see this news story on the major networks? How about the one with the family that asked BO repeatedly NOT to wear their son's bracelet? How about BO's involvement in all the corruption of ACORN and the Project Vote push that to this day is still happening.

Nope not going to happen.

If BO gets elected it will be a reflection of the udder corruption and criminal state that our nation has fallen prey to. I cannot even bring it to be called 'our nation'. It will truly be the obama nation.

How utterly and completely sad and scary.

laughable
It is asfe to assume that King liberal was looking into the mirror.
If we add King Liberal we would have a four ring circus.
ACLU; American Communist Lawyers Union

"A well regulated militia necessary to the security of a free state; the right of the people to keep and arms shall not be infringed"

"I'm the NRA and I vote"

I would like to order one Johnnie Mack, with a Caribou Barbie, please

And rightly so.

Solution of Bailout
I have a solution to the bailout...

Since liberals are into "socialism and redistribution of wealth" and are voting for Obama, then they pay for the bailout.
When they pull the lever at the poll, they immediately are signed up to pay the $700B.

Those of us smart voters who have been responsible, not over extending ourselves, nor taking out irresponsible loans, will pull the lever for McCain.

Do we have a Deal Libs?
Dottie writes: Sunday, September, 28, 2008 7:25 PM
of course we don't, Michele
The libs are all about "government" (read you and me who actually have jobs and pay taxes) being responsible. The leftists don't even give much to charity (have you seen what Biden gave last year). They truly believe it is the "government's" (read you and me who actually pay taxes) job to help the "poor" (read 85% or more who are able-bodied and could work if they had to).

The lefties are all about redistribution, and I am sickened by that! I do not want my money to go to those who could take care of themselves if the government did not give them the excuses they need to not have to. More importantly, I do not want money given to me by those who have chosen to go into professions that make more than I do. I have no right to the fruits of their labors.

The damage is already done
I'm glad the prosecutors are now backing off, but the damage was done when the (liberal) newscaster said, "The Barack Obama campaign is asking Missouri law enforcement to target anyone who lies or runs a misleading TV ad during the presidential campaign."

Anyone who lies? That seems a deliberate attempt to scare McCain supporters into keeping their mouths shut, or at least their keyboards!

Maybe Bob McCullough needs to get his nose out of the campaign and crack down on on meth labs and dead beat dads. As a resident of St. Louis County, I ask, aren't those the kind of things we pay him to do?
